This one!

I made our reservations about a month ago, all they had left where the basic cabins so I put in for an upgrade in case anyone should cancel. So far we'll have a cottage for the first 2 days.

The rest of the family will be in motor-homes that's why we chose this resort. My mom (who is 61) has been practicing her dirt skills and wants to ride slickrock. :)

Hiking, ATVs and maybe a day trip or two - we want to make sure everyone gets to do something they like - otherwise we'd all be going it alone. The interesting thing about bikes is - not everyone rides them.

10 days in Moab? I guess if you want to do a lot of sightseeing or hiking in addition to riding, but I would be heading up to Fruita after 5 days in Moab.

I have 2 weeks now and another week at the end of October - its only 8 hours away so I'll have the opportunity to return to the desert. The mountains outside of Salt Lake City are sure to have great trails. :)
I know some killer rides in northern Utah if you're interested. Shoot me a PM and we'll chat about it. There are some really good ones by snowbasin resort.

Slick Rock kicked my ass today... I started out on the baby loop to get my bearings and wasn't happy with my tires (Continental Vertical Pros) - I decided to get new rubber since I hadn't purchased tires in over 5 years. I went tohttp://www.moabcyclery.com/ and was talked into Kenda Nevegal USTs. For $5.00 each wheel and an additional $5.00 for stans they had me set up and ready to roll in under 10 minutes, customer service was also first class. They had a tip jar at the service counter but I just paid full on retail so I thought they did just fine.

So back to Slick Rock - me and 100 of my closest friends where on the trail - it was windy and dusty as all hell and took me waaaaaay to long to finish. Riding on the sandstone is cool - you don't realize the grade because you never loose traction, I ran out of gears and legs on several of the short steep climbs. As far as MTB experiences go - I not sure what all the fuss is about? Not technical but very scenic, at one point you can look directly down at the Colorado river and see a lot of the Arches National park. I hadn't heard about the trail being marked with white stripes - like a road, for me that was the hardest to get used to - I spent a lot of time focusing on the paint. I also ran out of water and had so much dirt in my helmet that my head actually hand crusted up mud stripes to match the vent pattern. Slick Rock kicked my ass in about 12 miles plus a 2 or 3 mile bail out loop - even though it was fun, this ride is not in my top anything - the riding surface is fun but that is about all.

I was informed that a trail called porcupine ridge was a better example of the Moab experience, locals seldom ride slickrock.

Not to worry - I have been taking pictures - will post when I return home.

Yeah - you really have to get past the white stripes. Slickrock pays dividends when you get OFF the stripes and start getting "creative"... remember - the lines are just there so you don't get lost. You can actually leave the lines and ride anywhere you want on the sandstone.

Slickrock always makes me feel like I'm 8yo again. :D

Porcupine rocks. If you do it with a shuttle service, get them to take you up at least as high as LPS. (lower Porcupine Singletrack). That'll knock off a few miles of boring climbing right at the beginning.

Slickrock sucks. That trail is just one of those trails that you do one time just to say you've done it. Pretty amazing how steep you can climb on that stuff though.

Try to hit up Amasa Back too. If you like little drops, you'll have a great time on that trail. Just don't let them get in your head. You let one mess with your head, and the whole trip will be a head game.

Now you tell me... I've ridden slick rock before just not the trail, the idea of following painted white lines was odd, I didn't see anyone leave the trail. No one wants to be a desert killer.
Someone told me that you can get fined for going off the trail. We hooked up with some locals and they took us to some natural half pipe a long time ago. It was way off the trail. They said that if a park ranger saw us, we'd get fined. Could've been BS i guess.

I'm pretty sure that's BS. Just stay off the crust and what is anyone going to complain about?

I did the LPS shuttle thing. That was awesome. There are some really fun bits and a cool variety of terrain on the trail to keep you on your toes all the way down.

I enjoyed Slickrock, but I only did the practice loop after doing Amasa Back. I found myself going into corners way hot, and was scared to leave the paint marks for fear of falling into a bottomless pit. Or worse.

Porcupine Rim ( today!!! AWESOME X110 to the 3rd!!!) OK, I assume most of the trail is like the portion I rode. I took a shuttle up to (I'm guessing) mile 6, we where dropped at the cattle guard (could have been mile 1.5) I rode slowly - taking about 6 1/2 hours total including road time on 128 back into town. I am exhausted and way out of shape!

Yesterday I did some short trails near some small lakes... I can't remember the names but I did take pics of the trail heads - they where nice single track forest around 7500 ft. The temps where in the middle 40s all day.

My heart is going to explode just sitting here.

Serial, go hit up klondike bluffs, and come down baby steps. That trail is really good too. Singletrack most of the way down.

My riding for this trip is probably over, most of my family arrived on Friday & the rest arrived this morning so far no one has agreed to rent a mountain bike or ride anything other than the few miles of bike lane, my brother in law thought the bike bridge would be fun but he's not about to pay $50.00 to ride a bike...

For the next several days it will be National Parks and hiking.

I couldn't do two Porcupine Rims in one week, I'm in bad, bad shape.

My guess - the major trails that where developed by moto heads will probably be safe - the numerous small hiking trails that are located in the National Forests will probably be closed to biking, I was surprised to see that biking was allowed on these trails. We're going to have a picnic at a small lake today - there are at least 6 trails within a few miles, I'll pack the camera an take pics if the trail-heads.

someone told me that congress wants to ban riding in Moab...Utah section proposed by Maurice Hinchey, D-NY 22.
