OK, so it's NOT the 29er size that's apparently the problem for me.

It's that I chose a ****ty, ****ty rim when I tried a 29" front wheel. Being a Salsa product and being built by a good builder, I thought my Delgado Disc wheel must have been a solid bit of gear.

And a year and a half later, I check MTBR reviews and find that every poster has folded one of these things.

Looks like I'll go with Mavic TN719s this time!! I loved the old Mavic 519. Just wonder if they're wide enough to run the Wierwolf LT 2.5s...

Other recommendations? I want welds, no pins!

my rear wheel has a WTB Laser Disc Trail that has been trued only once in 3 yrs. built by Mike Curiak.

my front wheel taco'd earlier this summer. I replaced the rim with a Velocity Blunt. 28mm wide, very light. another friend has been riding a set of Blunts front and rear all season, no problems.

our trails are very rough, rocky, techie. not easy on wheels.

PS: every wheelbuilder I know says to avoid those Salsas, because they're very very soft.

PPS: if you want a nice wide 29er tire, check what Maxxis introduced at Interbike this year.

Maxxis Ardent 2.4 soon to be available
I've been riding a prototype for about 7-8 weeks, and it's phenomenal. As in, unreal. As in, better than any existing 29er tire, by a good margin.

You know how the Rampage/Nevegal choice changed the landscape when they were offered? How much better they were/are than an ExiWolf?

The Ardent 2.4 is that much better than a Rampage, Nevegal, or WeirWolfLT. Maxxis is way on top of things.

For a rear tire, the new 2.1 Aspen is equally unreal. So fast it will make you think you got a lot stronger overnight. And it corners really well too.

Yeah, actually, I think it was the Semi, not the Delgado. But I didn't know what Delgado meant anyhow...I speak 3 languages reasonably well, and not one of them is Spanish... :)

My first set of Flows laced to Kings will be here next week. I've tried Arches and Bontrager Mustangs. Liked them both but too narrow.
