Hey folks:
I'm running 170mm Atlas FR's on my demo 8. I find I hit my pedals when pedaling in sections quite frequently. The bike is sick and I wouldn't change a thing, but I wonder if a set of 165mm's would help my cause. I basically lost a race last weekend because a went OTB's after hitting a stump with my pedal while pedaling a flat section. The real question is will 165's work well for somebody 6'1"????? Anybody over 6 feet run the 165's?????

cheers

Agreed. I'm 6' and run 165mm Saints. No issues, but I still occasionaly hit pedals. After all we are only talking about 5mm of additional clearance.

I don't think a 5mm shorter crank would prevent a crash like that. Having said that, I'm sure you'll be good with 165mm for pedalling.

I always thought 165's were for the verticaly challenged..............Sweet. Agreed that 5mm's isn't that much, but it might make the difference in some situations.

I also have a Demo 8 (09) with Atlas FR cranks, I'm 6'1". First I bought the 165mm crank then at a race I broke it in a nasty crash with a big rock. Bought the 170mm as I think the 165mm felt a bit cramped. 170mm cranks gives you 10mm extra space between the feet. They feel great for me and I don't think that I bang into more stuff that usual.

I run 35-40% sag.
362mm bb height.
I run NC-17 Sud Pin III pedals they are super low!

Good luck with your choice! :thumb:

This is a good point. Either way I'm getting a 2nd set of Atlas FR's. My current set will be going on my trail/FR rig, and I'll be getting a new Gold set for my Demo.....the question is 165 or 170 again. The 170's feel great, its just that I seem to hit them in the pedally sections. This is a tough one, because there are so many people who say the love the 165's, but have they run 170's to know the difference......it would suck to run 165's, loose some comfort and hit just as much.
I like to hear something from those who have experimented between 170'd and 165's.

cheers

I run 170s on all my bikes now but ran 165s on my various DHR's for 5 years after my first year with 170s. The 170s are much better for climbing (leverage is greater) but I found I could pedal in places on the DHR with the 165s that I couldn't with the 170s. I agree it's only 5mm but for some reason it makes a big difference. Leverage should not be as important on a pure DH bike, I run 170s because my RFX pulls double duty and I don't have a true DH bike anymore.

Just switched my wife's trail bike to 165 from 170 and she says it's like night and day and hardly ever clips a pedal anymore on her Banshee Rune. Even on the trails the shorter crank isn't bad if you're geared right and tend to spin vs hammer, I suck at spinning so the longer crank helps me up hills.

165mm XTs on an Orange 222 set up with lowest possible BB. I'm 6'7. No hitting the ground. Used to run 175mm XTRs, beat the crap out of them.

i have to agree with dh dad... if feels like u can put in your 1st pedal stroke faster than when i was using a 170... go figure. 165 for DH!!!

i didn't see what pedals you were running. check the end of the crank arm to see if you are running the crank arm into the rocks. if you are running flats with a huge front edge then you are clipping that more likely and raising your cranks by 5mm will help but maybe you should get some thinner pedals. i am running canfield crampons and 6mm edge means that if i hit my pedal it won't hook on the rock. call up chris and get a set you will love them.

I run the Syncros magnesium's. They are average thickness.

I just got the 165mm atlas FR for my canfield jedi. matching that with the canfield crampon pedals i have about 10mm of extra clearance compared to typical flat pedals like kona wah wahs and 170mm cranks.

i rode it with the 170's one day and then put the 165mm cranks on the next. didn't notice a difference. It may or may not give you much more clearance but it definately makes you think you can. small price to pay for extra confidence.
