This is a bit irritating. I ordered some bits from evo-gear, a ski board mega shop in Seattle. Sorta wanted the stuff fast so I paid 5$ extra for 2 day shipping via FedEx. I placed the order Monday. I got a confirmation e-mail from evo that included the tracking number blah blah blah, fast forward to last night I go follow the link to the tracking number and notice a curiosity, my package went from pick up in Kent, to Oakland CA, and is now in Memphis TN...!? WTF the strange part is it still says on time, they must have some back ass way of doing things because this seems like the most counter-productive way of getting something 270 miles in 2 days. I have bought a lot of stuff on ze interwebs over the years and Fed EX remains the only shipping service I've ever had a problem with.
LINK

Just to clarify, they ping ponged over 5000 miles across the country in order to travel 270. Rant over.

FedEX guy sounded like a broken record,"we only have hubs in certain cities"...

In a van.... down by the river
IIRC FedEx was BUILT on that business model... fly everything to a hub, regardless of where it was going, then deliver it from that central location. It seems daft if the item only needs to go 270 miles, but from a nationwide delivery standpoint it was pretty brilliant...

This is correct for everything except basic ground shipments. FedEx ground has lots of hubs located nationwide, but anything that is shipped by plane is flown to Memphis first, then to its final destination.

Yeah they are a bit circuitous, I have had shipments from them pass through the city I am living in to go to a hub an hour and a half east of me just so I can wait an extra day for it to go out for delivery right back an hour and a half west again.

haha my bad just skimmed it from top down . well make a claim get your money paid for shipping back. I know from shipping with Canadapost if you pay for xpresspost 2 day and its not there in 2 days they will refund your money paid for shipping. and alot of times its actually cheaper to send 2 day then it is to send regular ground. All depends what you are shipping of course.

I heard once that the guy who founded Fed-Ex wrote a paper about his idea of a central hub for a business school class...and got a C.

Damn Fedex. They drove right by me to bring it to their hub 30 min south of here.

My new bike should be here today, but I am leaving early because my leg is in pain right now. So I will most likely have to come get it over the weekend. Laame.

I'm dreaming of a day when fedex/ups/usps all deliver 7 days a week without extra delivery fees.

Also: 2 day shipping always means 3 day shipping.

Like in my rep, order ground next time. Usually in-state is next day. Fedex Air and Fedex Ground operate almost wholly separately and on different supply chains/dist networks, unlike UPS.
