I was riding home from work down a pretty busy 2 way street with a center turning lane. I am about to pass a cross street while traveling at the speed of traffic going my direction (about 25mph).

I see a guy in a silver Ford Focus in the center turning lane with his blinker on to turn down the road I am about to ride by.

I continue on because its pretty obvious I am in the road when I see him NOT look at the oncoming traffic (where I was) and drive yank the wheel and punch it (like he could make it before I passed by) and he nails my rear wheel/rear triangle of my Surly.

I get lifted over the front end of the car and high sided onto my right side where I come within inches of plowing into the front grill of a 4Runner at the stop sign. In this whole motion my left knee gets twisted while clipped in and instantly doesn't feel right.

Thankfully the guy stopped and probably 15 other people saw this dude blindly plow right into me. Thankfully I was wearing my helmet and had my backpack on with my work shoes. I came out scrape free.

Out of the firehouse across the street come running out a bunch of firemen and police were conveniently right down the street. The guy stopped, police report taken, my damage assessed by the firemen. I refused an ambulance because I was able to stand a little bit and hobble on my own.

Long story short, 4 hour ER visit, I strained my MCL in my left knee and now get to wear a immobilizer.

Isn't this the second time you have gotten hit? Maybe some really bright flashing LED's are in order. Hope you heal up quick.

Josh, it's good to hear that you are *alright*.
How did your shoulder fare? Did the guy have insurance? What's the prognosis on your knee? Let me know if you need any help with anything.

While I agree with your intent, the delivery is flawed...its clowns like you who give clowns like me a bad name. Well done Gacy.

Heckler, glad you are okay...heal up fast.

Glad to hear you're ok man! And were able to get a police report.

I've been hit twice, one just knocked me over, the last one broke my tib/fib. Like you, I was lucky and the guy stopped right away.

Heal up!

Thanks everyone.

All expenses have been tracked including the pants they cut up when the EMT's got there.

I haven't been able to look at my bike up close yet, but it looked like my rear end on the bike might be bent. Well see.

I'm really glad to be able to hobble away from this accident. I am just SUPER bummed out now. Today I was supposed to get approved to ride my MTB again after 13 weeks since my shoulder surgery.

My new commuter bike is showing up from FedEx today. WHY?!

I need a beer.

Holy crap Josh! You're having some terrible luck with injuries.

Where are ya drinking beer at this weekend? I might have to drop by and see if we can drown some of your bad luck.

Thanks guys. I really do have the worst luck. In the last year I have now been hit 2 times commuting to/from work.

Drinking at home. Come on by man. I am not going anywhere.

No worries Asher. I understand. =]

Amen...Side walk all day if possible. I dont know how many times I have had to try my damndest not to hit some a-hole riding his bike on a road that DOES NOT have enough space for a car and a bike to operate SAFELY. I understand all that "share the road" stuff. But some riders take this "right" way to far and endanger EVERYONE on the road. If you want to be treated as a car you better damn well keep up with the flow of traffic and if you get hit my a 2000 pound hung of steel........who's fault is that?....Common Sense people. You have the "right" to put a loaded gun in your mouth also, doesnt make it a good idea.

Wow, how did that rant happen? Dont worry I am slapping my self.

Not saying Heckler did anything wrong. I would have had to see the accident but it sounds like he was just the victim of one of the countless people here in the Bay area who flat out CANNOT DRIVE. Hope your knee ends up all right and I would check on that MRI if there is ins. **** , I would be on the phone with one of those injury lawyers that you see on T.V....hahaha time to get paid!

You sir are the problem with this country.

If his insurance company wont pay for everything and all expenses, then sue for the money you need to recoup costs.

It seems like, atleast when I got hit by a driver this summer, that their insurance company will bend over backwards to help you. The progressive lady was down a few days after making sure I was well taken care of.

Hope you get better and back on the bike! Knee injuries are the worst.

i think the whole right of way thing is dangerous. its easier for a pedestrian to see a car. its easier for a pedestrian to stop. its easier for a pedestrian to hear a car and its faster to let a car go by instead of having the car wait for the pedestrian

Heal quick. Saw a chick with ear buds on nearly run across in front of a car this am. She would have been throttled. I have had so many close calls this year I am contemplating ditching the road for a bit. The last time I rode I was marshaling for a ride that was going on and was back tracking. An old man was watching other people going the opposite direction to turn around (turns out he was just driving up and down the road to f*#k with people) when he veered over and bumped me. I rode into the ditch and back out (like Lance, but I am cooler than him) and went on my way. I hate feeling helpless.
