Anyone have any time on the Joplin? How is it's durability?

A buddy of mine just bought a Maverick that was spec'd with one... I've always liked the idea of an on the fly adjustable post because of the terrain up here, but it's never had a good execution... CB seems to have come up with something that works really well though.

I recently got a joplin after seeing how well my friends performed. Happy so far.

I'll just throw this out there- w00dy works for RASEbike and they have an uber-height adjustable seatpost. You may be able to score a pre-production model for testing or even just buy a real one through him. Support the monkey!

I like the idea of the Joplin with the underseat lever as I don't think I'd want another cable on my bars...but my seattube is 27.2. Plus 250+ for these things seems kinda steep.

Gravity Dropper Descender (non-remote) comes in 27.2 but its not much cheaper...

I might as well put the QR seatpost clamp back on my bike if I was going to get the GD Descender. Which is why I didn't mention it in a discussion about the Joplin. :clue:

Me too.
I spoke to CB prior to Interbike and was told they planned to release a 27.2 version of the Joplin ... but it hasn't materialized.

I'm half tempted to make something myself with old posts, a spring and an old 100mm sealed Judy damper. Seriously, how hard can it be. Right? Right!?

Luckily my bike is 31.6 so it can take one. I've found them on Ebay for around $150. I'll probably pick one up over the next few weeks. I'm with you on the bar controls. I already have 1 too many remotes on my bars.

It's actually super easy to use, way easier than stopping to mess with the QR. I've got the Descender post on two bikes, and use it all the time.

Yeah, not as quick as the remote bar mounted stuff, but still way faster and less flow killing than stopping to mess with the QR.

Found mine for under $200 each.

I guess I ASSumed that the using the little knob halfway down the post would be a PITA.

The joplin post is great when it works and I like the fact that you can put your seat anywhere within the travel range (as opposed to only having 2 or 3 positions like the gravity dropper). Unfortunately based on my personal experience and that of many of my friends, the joplins are not as reliable as the purely mechanical designs. After a while they stop consistently raising all the way up and other weirdness. Crank Bros has been good at customer service, so that's nice, but still.

And I don't understand why anyone would spend the cash for one of these posts and not get one with a remote lever, it just doesn't make sense to me. The best thing about them for me is the ability to drop the post when you need to without taking your hands off the bars.

I just bought the remote and was considering offering it up to trade for a lever instead. Im not liking the cable for the remote. Hopefully I can get it to fit the bike a little cleaner but it looks like quite the mess right now.

Oh I hear ya, for the most part I am anti-gadget and it was tough for me to convince myself to add more crap to my bike. But for me the biggest reason to get an adjustable post is so I can drop my seat when I find myself in a sketchy spot unexpectedly, usually at a time when taking a hand off the bars is the last thing I want to do. I ride a lot of undulating terrain and use the remote a lot. To me a little more clutter is a small price to pay.

Yes, a height right!
You have no idea how many people asked me about those at Interbike.

Thanks for chiming in Sandwich and Maddog. I'll try not to be too spammy.
Golgi, reliability seems to be a problem with all of the hydraulic systems. I've heard (and this is all second hand infomation) that the joplin works great when it works, but it occasionally ceases to do that. There's no fix for that in the field and it has to go back to CB when that happens.
I can understand if you don't want to fork over the cash for a RASE post, but I urge you to go with something with a mechnical spring. I've heard of a couple heavier guys breaking the top clamps on a Gravity Dropper, but other than that those are supposed to be pretty reliable.

Funny, even with the current problems that is definitely true, and the CS seems better too.

Hey Woody, how about a monkey discount? I'm getting a new bike soon to replace one that was stolen...:brows:
You were the one person on here that ran Topolinos when I worked there. You following me around?

Yahtzee! And since I don't run a front derailleur the remote mounts super clean, I use the front der' frame bosses to route the cable and install the lever on the left where the front shifter used to be.
