I burn through a set of pulleys every cross season...I guess mud and muck aren't good for em :D I actually wear them down, its not the bushings/bearings. I was thinking about going with some ceramic bearing, aluminum, pulleys. I have a set of cheapo aluminum pulleys on the training bike but I don't have many miles on them. Will the aluminum pulleys last longer? Will it wear the chain more quickly? I was thinking about buying these

I can't think of a much better place to waste some money on a CX bike.
Spend $3 on some Shimano pulleys twice a season and don't worry about it.
Then spend the extra $45 on a nice gift for me or something.

That's my feeling anway.

Those pulleys will be toast halfway through the first muddy race of the season. Do you remember the Bullseye/Carmichael/Control Tech etc sealed bearing pulleys from the mid 90's? The seals aren't good enough to keep the muck out. They fill up with goo and then start rotating around the pulley bolts. I have half a dozen or so of them that have been turned into zipper pulls, dog collar jewelry, key fobs etc...

I already have this issue with my lower pulley on my Ultegra SL der. The Shimano pulleys are expensive, thats why I was thinking about going with these....hoping they would last longer.

I'll have to go look at my derailleur pile to confirm compatibility, but if you're going through them that fast, why not have your shop order a ten pack of pairs of the cheapie Shimano pulleys? Should run you about $20.

Those sealed bearing pulleys really are crap in the mud. And most of the ones I've seen don't have provisions for float on the upper pulley anyhow. They were noisier, more expensive, didn't last as long and didn't work as well as stock.

Sadly, yes.

Regarding those derailleur pulleys, I'd just go with OE Shimano jobbers. Shimano's guide pulley has some side to side movement, which I doubt these will have and may negatively affect shifting. Also, I'd imagine those things will make more noise than a Powerdome cassette when your chain gets dry.
