Breaking bumps are just part of riding. It's partly why downhill bikes have 8 inches of suspension. Although sometimes at places I've seen them get out of hand (think 5 inches deep) for a mountain bike.

Ya, it's fun, but nothing new gets built after the first few weeks usually, and they took out my favorite jump... That step up by what I think is crap chute, used for the U.S. Open.

a huge part though is tuning what you have properly. You can get so much more out of your bike and suspension if it's setup right (can even help smooth out some breaking bumps) and if you think alpine's are bad...check out the one's on A-line out at whistler, I went early in the season when they weren't bad, but I could see how by August they'd be more like whoops then bumps

Some of the ruts at platty can get ridiculous on trails that aren't touched too much.

I have a specialized demo 9 with elka rear shock and fox 40. Hopefully I will have a more "race oriented" frame for 2010, but we'll have to see what happens. I just want to get faster now...

One of the many differences between Diablo and Whistler is that, at Whistler they actually fill in and fix the braking bumps.

well i was only there for a little bit so that might be so but the higher rider traffic out there definitely put some big bumps in the road so to speak, but at diablo the only place the bumps are bad seem to be on alpine..

^ agree completely, i understand diablo cannot fix them every weekend, but once a month should really help, i notice that it takes longer to get them, but once started they spread like a bad virus. i think the novice riders do better and skid LESS when there is no bumps. IMHO

you certainly have a point there but the only problem is dirt work, especially when it's not just the lips of jumps or major ruts is finicky, the weather needs to cooperate (if it rains right after dirt related maintenance you can just sit there and watch your work wash away) then if it doesn't sit long enough and gets ridden on once again all your work goes to sh!t...so it's definitely tough to keep trails like alpine, a-line, etc smooth...then again the only spot on the trail i thought suffered was the left hander after the step down but that's going to happen no matter what because every rider needs to brake there for that turn

they do a good job at diablo i mean during the busy times like june through august but at the very begging an end they do seem to let some trails slip a little but for the most part they do a good job an yea i havent been to whistler but it most be harder to maintain there its so ****en huge ....... and yea im on the big hit 2 2009 its a good bike but i do have to tune it to my weight i've heard tht it makes a huge difference does it ?

setting up the rebound on your suspension (as well as the compression) will make a monster difference, i'm no suspension expert by any means but remember when you're tuning it that you want your rebound basically as fast as you can stand it so the shock doesn't pack up...check the DH forums for suspension tuning tips as well as sites like pinkbike

From the few times I've ridden moto, it's nothing on those bikes. Lean back, and find the line, and try to ride in that rut. Simple, but hard.

Downhill, you have a few inches less of suspension, 200 pounds less pushing you, no motor, and 5 inches is a pretty significant amount compared to a wheels size.

So I am not pro, obviously. But 5 inch ruts on a dh bike are pretty sizeable to the majority of people. But 2,3, even 4 inches, that's just the name of the game I'd say, maybe 5 depending on the grade.

Im over here now
I want to go o les gets, I am sick of riding at one place all of the time. We complain because we don't ride anything else.
Les Gets was nice, but Pleney was definitely more fun. when we went, there was only 3 lifts in the area running....theres usually 20 i believe b/w all the mountains in the area.

their main "a-line" was fun, but i had just gotten my Revolt a week before and was dying with all the braking bumps on that trail. i think if i was able to dial the suspension in, it would have been more fun.

Have you been riding at MSA? It is gods gift to earth. I actually want to live there.
