I'm considering going clipless for DH/AM and was wondering what yall consider the best pedals to be.

Also some shoe recomendations would be great.

Thanks,
Sanders

i couldn't hang with clipless set up, but when i tried i used time pedals. Their not as adjustable as others but don't seem to pre-release as bad as some pedals. Five ten makes some nice shoes or 661.

Shimano pedals I've found to be the easiest to clip into in a hurry. They weigh more then Mallets but otherwise perform much better (reliable clip in) in my experience. I've never tried Times.

6 of the top 10 WC riders ride clipped in. All of those six use CB. The ease getting in and out is the best reason for me. When you have to get back in you can do it without it affecting your run or pedal stroke at all, fwd, backward or straight down pressure does it. Peaty runs his at max float setting allowing a lot of body english while turning. Most though run it with reg float setting. The cleats do wear quickish so check them. Shimano DX, Vans or 661's allow for best and easiest set up, allowing contact with the platform and pins too. 5.10 gonna have GM spd shoe too out next year.

7 out of top 10 ride clipped in: minnaar, peat, atherton, hannah, leov, gwin, and barel. Everyone but gwin is on crank bros. gwin= shimano (when he rides them.

15 out of 10 bizutchs ride what doesn't gob up with mud no matter what. That would be Mallets. Lake, 661, Shimano, Vans Warner SPD...all will work with them. You usually have to insert 1-2 shims under the cleat and clear out something of a ramp to the front and rear of the 661s with a knife. Not just a big gouged hole, but more like an oblong crater to give the front and rear of the shoe some mud clearance and room for the wings of the pedal to drop into to clip in.

Shimano and Vans (I think) both have a pre-cast groove to help.

6.5 riders ride clipped in :) Gwin rode 4 races on flats (Maribor, Schladming, Labresse and Andorra) and 4 on Shimano's (PMB, Ft Bill, MSA and Bromont)

But more importantly 15 out of 10 bizutchs ride them. Classic.

Thanks for the input. I'm glad to hear that CB's are a good option. I already ride Egg Beaters on the SS so I'm used to their unclip action and float.

thought of you this morning when I got on the stationery trainer. I popped in Earthed and saw that pic of Rennie on the cover. Remember our little "tiff" over that whole Dirt cover thing. :p

Love ya man. Come back to NC sometime. :thumb:

Im a big fan of Times as well.

but if you all ready have CB why not stick with those since you like them and are used to them. also have extra sets of cleats around that way.

And if you want that exact same performance without pedals that kill their own bearings, go with TIME :D
Word. Been running Time's for a while now. I wish they'd update the Control pedals to include the forged bars on the XS pedals. Talking to the Time rep, it doesn't sound like its gonna happen though

is that why the Z pedals' bars wear so quickly? I have regular ATACs on my two MTBs and my cross bike has some Zs and my right pedal has way more float & slop on the Zs because the bar is worn all funky.

Buy new cleats.

I've had time pedals last me almost a decade. Who wins the battle between brass doped steel and straight up steel?

The system is designed like that for a reason (and why CB copied it to an even greater extent).

I'm glad to hear that CB's are a good option.
What I heard was "some fast guys are sponsored by crank brothers and likely get immediate replacements whenever something goes wrong" :D

But if you're already running CBs then there's certainly a good argument for not having to buy a different brand of cleats and have multiple shoes with different brands bolted on them. If it's cold and muddy, I take my dh shoes on xc rides. Standardization is good.

Crank Brothers make the best disposable pedals on the market.

Time kills it, CB sucks it.

I have had my Time Controls for at least 8 years and they are going strong.

I had some CB candies for like a month before they crapped out (bearings seized, pedals fell apart).

CB is big on giving any athlete/magazine/internet site dork they can tons of free product (smart for marketing). People who have to buy their stuff ride Time.

People who get CB pedals for free are generally stoked on them.

I rock the the Time Z pedals, and use the old Shimano 646's when I'm going to be hiking a lot (steel cleats). Can't really go wrong with either of those.

I had the CB and they lasted ages easy to get in and out and light

But I prefer the Shimano DX M647 there solid, have the same attributes as the CB bar the weight. You can also adjust tension on them for getting in and out something you cant do on CB (I dont think) and for me better value they have ran faultless for 8 months now.
