brand new profile mtb ss hub that my friend just laced up for me, and the thing skips just as bad if not worse than the eastern hub I was running before. :twitch: Of course I'm going to email profile and see what they can do about it, but seriously how lame is that? you spend over $200 on a brand new profile casette hub and that sh1t skips! The real mindfvck here for me is that profile has such a good rep for quality and precision components. I assume they will take care of me well, but then again I assumed that by purchasing this hub I would rid myself of any further issues with skipping hubs.. Any of you here know much about profile or their customer service/warranty? As of now I'm sitting here frustrated as hell thinking I quite possibly have the worst luck ever with bikes..

I am positive it is the hub since I also have a brand new sprocket and chain. Also from the sound and feel of it.

I have 3 bikes with full Profile hub sets, 2 of them SS. No issues with skipping. Make sure you have the driver in correctly with the correct spacers. I assume you have a 135mm SS hub? If so you may need an additional thin spacer. But it sounds like the pawls are not engaging which may be too much grease. They basically require NO grease and only 3-in-1 oil is needed. Take the driver off, clean and remove any grease, look for anything that shouldn't be there, and then add some oil and reassemble.

Also look for the obvious chainline issue. If your chain is on an angle, there lies your problem. Also make sure your chain, sprocket and cog (or driver) all play nice together. I have seem people trying to fit a 3/32" chain onto a 1/8" cog and wonder why it doesn't work.

As far as Profile they will take care of you.

I pulled off the driver and put a couple drops of tri-flow in there but it didn't really seem to make it skip any less. The pawls look and seem like they should work fine too.. I made sure to put that thin spacer back between the hub body and driver, and as for my chainline it seems pretty dead-on but I'll go play with it for a bit and see if I could get it any straighter.. I would have no problem just sending the hub back, but my friend just laced it up for me so its really just another massive inconvenience among many I have dealt with while building this bike and I honestly feel like I'm going insane.

are you using gears that were designed for ss? because non-ss gears are ramped, and i have seen skipping when using ramped gears on a SSsetup.

I have 3 profile hubs that skip. One six speed and two nine speed hubs. The inner teeth on the shells are screwed so I think I have 3 paper weights.

To be fair, they got ridden hard for years with no maintenance. I tried to contact profile but since I am in Switzerland it is a pain. The front hubs are all still going, btw.

my mini will pop every now and then. overall, it's the best hub I've ever run for it's intended purpose - street/park. I suggest you call profile. their warranty/cs is generally top notch based on my past experiences.

I talked to shane at profile today, he told me to send the wheel in and he will look at it and see what he can do. He also said profile hubs are supposed to be run dry.. Could it have been bad that I put some tri-flow in there? I've worked at a shop for a while and I really don't see how a light oil could be bad, nor do I understand why a hub should be run dry. I mean, you must have to rebuild/oil it at some point in its life right? Is it possible that I send the wheel in, and they send it back saying it's my fault for not running it dry? Knowing my luck any of the most horrible scenario's are most likely... :dead:

I can't see that running light oil like tri-flow would cause or increase this problem. Sounds like your previous post indicated that it was dry before you put a couple drops in. Before you mention that your chainline was straight as can be was the only thing I could think up. It's a shame that you spent good money and experiencing these problems. I can't see them sending it back saying it's fuk'd and it's your fault if the only thing you did was add some oil. I'm sure they'll fix the problem and send it back to you.

Just got it back from profile the other day... Still skips. Not as much as it did when I got it, but the whole reason I bought a profile hub was because I thought it wouldnt skip like the piece of sh!t eastern hub I had before that drove me insane. Wtf should I do now?? Almost makes me want to start skating again..

I'll sell you my king single speed hub laced to an 823....

It also skips, so I don't know if that will help you  actually, not really, its very very infrequent, not regular.

But seriously, what spacing do you have? are you 110 or 135? if 135, just buy a dt swiss with 36pt engagement. Nobody has ever or will ever skip one of those things.

I agree, I am on DT Swiss hubs for a couple years now and skipping is a problem of the past. Your hub shell might be the problem or at least that was my problems.

go back to profile and ask for a brand new hub. no more refurbs. in the meantime get another hub. at that point i probably wouldn't even want to run the profile.

maybe what you could do is buy a 135mm female axle hub of your choice and get some blue 6 bolts with built in 14mm shoulder. you would have to know the thread pitch of the axle. i'm not too familiar with 135mm female hubs. B6 makes a couple different sizes with the 14mm shoulder. 3/8 x 16 tpi and 3/8 x 24 tpi. a king hub could be run like this in 14mm drops. just ideas.

i have been beating the piss out of my 14-135 dmr, its great. also you can make a hybrid freecoaster if you buy the 10-135 freecoaster and get the bmx 14mm axle nuts.

well according to that link, i dont see any disc tabs, so if you run rotors, you wont be able to. my geisha mtb freecoaster is ok, it eats bearings. (literally 30 min b4 it explodes) but if you dont mind it being a little gritty, ive exceeded a year on the "broken" bearing just fine.

I talked to them again and it doesn't sound like getting a brand new one is really an option.. When I call them they tell me the same thing: "its pretty much mathematically impossible for it to skip" and I'm like: "well.. it must be physically possible, cause its happening.." Prolly just gonna sell the damn thing i suppose.. :dead: Pretty sure this is the most disappointed I've ever been with a bike component..
