There is a good possibility I might be offered a position in Seattle.. The wife and I would both work downtown. We have a 10 year old and 1 year old, so we desire decent schools and the other kid friendly attributes (single family housing, parks etc). I don't want an overly long commute and if at all possible the ability to ride (bicycle) into work.

Where should we be looking and where should we be avoiding?

Rent wise I guess $2000 or so and less...would like it to be a lot less but it seems housing is very expensive compared to what I am used to.. how do so many people afford those $600K + houses?

Oh and need a decent after work ride nearby--nothing super special but good for a 90 minute or so stress buster.

I don't think you can have it both ways. If you're going to live and work in the city, any decent riding will be an hour drive away. But it's a better option than trying to live in the 'burbs and having a huge commute every day. Traffic there is pretty insane. There is the Collonade under the freeway for riding, but it's not like being out on the trails.

And I'm sure you know that it rains like 45 inches a year?

GO! SEAHAWKS!
Decent schools? Are you looking at private or public? Public I'd suggest the East side or North.

There are some great after work rides on the East side too.

I realize it rains a lot....

I would take a shorter commute and good schools over close decent riding.. What about Bellevue?

Prefer public schools but if housing were cheaper and private schools nearby that would be fine too.

Snacks more information on the east side? Is this Seattle proper or some suburb, please be patient as I know next to nothing about the area.. other than it rains a lot and is sort of close to Whistler...LOL

South Seattle
Commutes suck into the city unless you can score something on a bus line. ie, live in Bellevue and hit the bus across I-90.
Riding is all driving distance away but it is doable during the week. I live and work very close to DT and I am 45min from incredible trails. Totally doable after work once a week.

Schools kinda suck in the city and they are in the middle of a messy reorganization. I hate the burbs but that's cause I can't handle traffic.

Best value house, school, commute wise:

Shoreline
Renton
maybe Kent

If you can swing it. Redmond and Kirkland are nice area's with good schools and fairly close proximety to trail destinations. But they are on the steep end of pricing

Eastside generally refers to the eastside of the lake; Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland, etc.
Living there and working in DT Seattle means commuting across one of two bridges; SR520 or I90. Traffic is spotty at best but expect unbearable most of the time. Especially if you are working normal (9-5) hours.

Most other areas have there good spots and bad spots. Renton (south end of the lake) traditionaly gets bagged on but there is some nice areas there.

No matter what, expect traffic. Seattle, #1 with a bullet...

PS; most GREAT riding is beyond the borders of this little map. But there are quite a few good ones within a reasonable distance for afterwork rides.

Yeah - but summer is only June-Aug.

;)
Everyone from here can tell you that summer doesn't really start until July 5th.
But it generally stays decent until about mid October. It starts getting colder with shorter days but doesn't get wet until about that time.
The trails don't really dry out until late June, early July.

Wait, I mean it stays wet here ALL THE TIME, it never stops raining, stay away!!!!!
