I worked in the ski industry for about 7 years but my last season was '02-'03. What has changed since then? Is my 2000 Forum Bjorn Leines snowboard ridiculously out of date and will kids point and laugh at me if I take it out? What should I look for in new boots?

I swore off all winter sports when I moved back East b/c of the terrible conditions but now I'm thinking of getting back into it for something to do. :weee:

A lot of skiing and snowboarding has become pretty park oriented, with "steezy" looking equipment and stuff. A lot of boards and very much like TLD kits, way to bright with horrible graphics. You should be fine with your board but I would look into getting some new bindings, the technology has progressed quite a bit. I've been using Burton bindings for 4 years now and only broken a couple. I'm using a pair of Thirtytwo Ultralight boots right now, so far I like them. Ride and Burton also make good boots. There's a lot of good equipment available but it's a hassle to pick through xxxxxl tee shirts, neon jackets, horrible designs, and other garbage.

Just get out there and ride. The new Lib/Gnu/Rossi licensed boards are pretty hot right now, but get riding again and then you can figure out what's good or not.

If you're going to be snowboarding in the northeast, make sure your pants are too big and hang down past the crack of your ass. That's how all the cool folks wear them.

If you're worried about how strangers are going to judge you I think you may be a bit too much of a delicate flower for snowsports.

It was a joke yo!

Alright - I'm going out tomorrow. I'll report back to everyone on how my skillz have faded over the years. Thanks for the info.

   at this whole thread.

your board is probably fine. as for boots, go with what fits, try on as many different kinds as you can. imo, boa is overrated, even with the new 2 stage system, and most other funky lacing systems aren't as good as traditional laces. thirty two is a good brand to look at, as their main focus is boots.

look into some nike boots if you got the $$$. i've been incredibly impressed with the few pairs i've had the chance to check out, and have heard nothing but good things about them.

Me too. Got boas rode them 3 or 4 times then got rid of them. Maybe one day if I break my ankle and I am to cheap to go to the hospital ill put them on as a cast. I got the thirtytwo ultralights and loved them from day one.

God I hate tall-tees so much. My least favorite trend in the past 10 years and theres been many bad ones. I for one cannot wait for those things to go the way of hammer pants.

My beef with boas was not being able to get them tight the way I like ie, loose in the toes tight in the shins, its either circulation killing tight or sloppy skate fit loose with no in between. The dual Boa boots look pretty sweet but thats almost as much of a hassle as just lacing the damn things up to begin with.

I would really like to try snowboarding but I'm too cheap.
The gear is relatively cheap (compared to bikes at least) its the lift tickets that are starting to get outrageous.

I got in 10 days last winter and I haven't gotten a day in yet this season, being on the east coast now and the stupidly expensive tickets have killed my drive to spend all that time and money.

really it doesn't matter what you get out their on. who gives a piss what others ride on go with what you like. people who talk about others equipment need to spend more time not being a d-bag and just riding.

If your in college you can get season passes at the big mountains for a fraction of the normal price.

Oh yes that to. Even if my shins were not destroyed from pedals, the way it pinches your lower shin would still hurt like a b*tch.

I've got the dual boas.
Good for powder days or when I want to really crank out hard turns.

Not rad for park or soft days. So I own two pairs of boots.

I'm still on my Burton Alp from 1996. The hard shell boots are newer probably 2000. I would like to get a new carving board but Burton only makes boards for kids that only care about grinding rails. Seriously though, I would get a new board/boots/binding but $1k is alot to spend on a sport that will always come second to mtn biking. Even though I had a great season last year.

Started riding in 91, used to get a new board and boots every two years, partly because I was still growing. Just like on my bike my favorite type of riding has always been more of a freeriding/downhilling kinds style, so on the board it was more all mountain/freeriding with a few years of the "tricks" mixed in. Now that my skills have deminished I prefer to just get out and ride some back country or just rip all over the mountain going fast making nice turns, the park annoys me.....now i get a new board every 5 or 6 years and am still rockin' a pair of warn out boots I bought in 99 :(

Burton's bindings are good quality, but horribly overpriced (just like pretty much everything else they make).

Burton boots = horrible. I have 2 pair of burton's chillin upstairs, and I came home every day with wet feet. I'm talking, had to call it some days because my toes were frozen when I didn't put toasty toes in my boots.

Got a pair of 2010 Nitro Fader's in February (I think), and my feet stayed SUPER dry. I absolute love them! I couldn't believe my feet could stay dry. First day I had them, I rode from 10am to 9pm.. and then went out and partied for a few hours in them. They were silly comfy right off the bat. They continued to keep my feet dry day after day for the rest of the season (another 35 days). I still can't believe I have dry feet now.

Seriously. Try them.

If you are going to be getting new pants/jacket, get them with the ziptech. The pants and jacket zip together, with a traditional powder skirt. No more snow up your back, or down your pants. =)

Man, I wanna go ride now.. Only got 57 days last year, and now I might get 10 this season.. sh!t.

So I went out today for the first time since 2003. Turns out snowboarding is a lot like riding a bike - you don't forget. It was fun but riding DH is more fun. I think I'm gonna get a season pass to the local ant hill though.

I What has changed since then?
Rocker boards, ie reverse camber, definitely a game changer.

It's really gained a lot of popularity in the past year or two, and is for sure worth trying it out.

I ride a Never Summer SL-R, which is reverse cambered between the bindings and traditional camber from binding to tips. It inspires confidence for high speed without the fear of edge catches and floats well in powder, all in a somewhat short 155cm board. Awesome.
