Hi,
my wife broke her shoulder, and now she can't downhill for quite long time, but was allowed to do some XC/AM riding.
considering its rather hot area, anyone tried or know of shoulder protection that should protect the plate and the fracture?

we were thinking of some sort of lycra shirts with plastic pads covering the upper arm and shoulder.

anyone?

thanks

this should help! it gives her upper body protection! :D

Id shoot for a stripped down upper body suit ie 661 or something and put a ABS platic plate in plate in there a shirt and plate isnt going to steay in a crash. Theres no real protection aside of just try and fall on the other side its what I do or when i had a broken back recently I couldnt get my motion right so when I hurled off the edge I lawn darted and landed on my bally and helmet to avoid my back LOL it worked!!!!

Pads tend to protect from flesh wounds and help a bit on stretching type shoulder injuries as the pads slide. They don't do much in the way of bone protection. If she really wants to do it check out the RockGardn Ladies Flak Jacket. It can be worn short sleeve and has front and rear straps on the shoulder cups - most others you'll find only have them on the front.

thanks.
she has thr flack jacket. however its almost impossible to ride uphill with it.
what about using an EVS shoulder stabilizer, and sawing an old pressure suit shoulder pad to it? tje straps of the stabilizer should stop it from moving, and it shouldnt be that hot... anyone tried it? or anything similar?

A guy I know here works directly with a product called evo shield its a molding material used in pads heat it mold it and its ridiculous protective but is molded specifically for you. If you find a shirt with a pad pocket in it or a way to fasten it to a article of clothing it would be molded to her.

Just an idea to throw in the bucket and yeah Marks stuff (rockgarden) is great. Been running it for years. (lol when i actually wear pads)

They have recoil jerseys fro shoulder protection etc for shooting and stuff.

by far best way to prevent injuring your shoulders is working them out and strengthing the muscle groups in that area. is she in physical therapy?

I.H3.40, you haven't mentioned the exact nature of her injury and the kind of protection she needs, but the only way to avoid loading a bone is to reroute forces around it by way of some sort of exoskeleton. Nothing of this sort is going to be light, cheap, non-bulky, or particularly breatheable. For example, contact sport armour (esp. football) would do the best job of protecting her shoulder, but it's going to be a lot less fun to ride in that than her existing Rockgard'n armour.

The idea of a shoulder brace plus padding might help and could restrict motion to a safe range, but it's not going to divert much of the energy of a crash.

hya, thanks for all the answers. i broke the shoulder, and had it plated (on the upper arm underneath the cartridge), and at the moment in intense physiotherapy. i race XC, and intende to go back to training in 3-4 weeks.

looks like im gonna be off DH untill august in whistler, but for the meantime i will be riding XC/AM/road 4-5 times a week

i was thinking of getting some sort of protection from occasional trees, or roads. its not to replace muscle strengthning, but to make sure that the shoulder will have protection for the first few months.

shame no company makes a jersey with shoulder+upper arm (from above elbow to shuolder) pads...

for xc on a hot ountry the pressures are out of the question, so was thinking of creative solutions...

If all you want is a little bump protection, then how about taking an old upper body suit (or your Rockgard'n, if you don't mind sacrificing it) and removing all the pads except those in the relevant areas? I just had a look at my Flak Jacket and it would only take a few minutes with a seam ripper.
