does anyone make them for mountain bike use? a buddy of mine is a machinist, im going to have him whip me up a set just for giggles. im thinking more of a bar end about 3 inches long then curving in another inch or so, so it doesn't stick into a tree obviously. i know i have hit a few trees in the past where my fingers didn't agree with me. the only problem im facing is that the inside of my atlas fr bars seems to be tapered. any suggestions? again its really just for fun, something to waste spare time on.

thanks,

-travis

Haha Ive wondered when someone would bring this up, to be honest Ive thought of doing it myself many times.

There are other good options as well Cyra do probably the lightest, the moto versions are not full wrap and are way lighter than std BB full wrap arounds, but do not offer the crash protection of BBs but then do ya need that on an MTB if just for bashing trees and stuff they maybe enough, Acerbis also have a full range! looking different may well set a new trend like the gloveless rippers at mo :D

well, my main concern is that a "one sided" guard would not be strong enough, but it is really the only option due to the master cylinder.. but then again a one sided guard can also snag a bush, or even race course tape. im going to try to figure something out, i have mid terms all this week, but after im done with that i will get some progress!

Back in the day, early 90's, I saw a pic where someone had a triangle type guard, handle bar being one side. slim bar that attached at both ends and stuck out forward to a point, not a sharp point or out more than 18in's maybe. this was for dual slalom so he wouldn't snag a gate.

A group of guys in the Mid-Atlantic tried to start a company called SystemDH years ago (late 90's/early 2000) by making mtb sized bark busters out of titanium rod and bar clamps. They were sported by non other than Jay Humphries as he made his return to dh racing after a few years of big injuries. If I remember correctly, the ti proved to be fragile/brittle for the size rod they were using, as it would either break in the bending process or fold-up upon impact in their early design efforts. Not sure that they ever got it figured out and I've not heard anything from those guys in years, so......

I like the idea, as I run bark busters on my KTM for the very same reason, but it does look kind of goofy on the mtb I must say. Perhaps someone like DW could design, introduce, and market something that would catch on as the next big thing!

Do what Eric Pinson and Lopes did in the day. But a set of big curved bar ends for XC, mount them, then run a piece of fishing rod from one to the other. They used it for smashing gates. The awesomeness of it.

Why not just get some of those gloves with the carbon fiber knuckles?
I just broke my pinky knuckle last week jumping between two trees, so I've had a week to think about this- possibly too much: If I've got carbon fiber knuckles, then instead of smashing my knuckle into a hard tree at 30 mph, I'd be smashing my knuckle into hard carbon fiber at 30 mph... so the only thing to save your knuckle would be for the CF to absorb enough of the impact and disperse it to prevent your knuckles from getting jacked up. Seeing as how stiff CF is, I don't think that would work.

I was thinking maybe those d3o gloves 661 makes, or just something with a lot of soft padding in the knuckle...

bark busters sure would be nice, I don't think I'd run them all the time, but on certain tracks I'd take the weight penalty for piece of mind to rail tight sections more aggressively.

I remember seeing a picture of Will Longden (maybe not so well known across the pond, he was a mainstay of the MBUK magazine race team and now rides for lapierre uk I think) with a metal ruler attached across his brake lever bodies so he could hit slalom poles with smashing knuckles and levers

www.warehouse-51.com also has the VPD in their POC gloves.
