I got laid off in Early December and the job search has been frustrating at best.. though if my pay was going down like yours I would definitely be thinking about getting out unless you are in sales and everyones pay is decreasing because of volume.

I complain at work, as well as my sales staff under me, that it's getting slower and slower and sales are going down but I am truly thankful that I have a job. My pay is 100% commission based but "Where there's a will there's a way" right. My sales guys don't put in the extra effort to call past customers, send out birthday cards, offer to buy a customer or 2 an oil change, etc. If you have a job now MAKE THE BEST OF IT! I see homeless everywhere and all they can do is ask for money but when I've offered some jobs washing cars they say no. Most people don't want to work for their money but they sure as hell can complain when there's no cash for them. That sh!t pisses me off. I'm working roughly 60 hours a week right now and business is 10 times slower than it used to be. I'm really just ranting/venting but all in all I'm thankful for my job in these times.

Mines about eighty percent commission so I feel ya there. We are on a two week pay system, what really brings my coworkers down<specially my sales staff> is when we bang out three or four great days, everything sells, everything goes well.... then BAM four days of nothing.... all the hard work starting off down the drain because totals are in the ****ter.

What you just listed about calling past customers is very important, you gotta let them know that you want to keep them coming back, and you are more than willing to continue to keep the vehicles in working order. Im the lead Tech outside, but I also step up and help with sales whenever I am needed. In fact most of the time I talk directly with the customers with my tickets, gives them a great feeling of trust, and I can explain it better than my sales guys... So I myself when we are slow, go in and pull up my customer list, and call them up. Make sure they are happy with the work, the pricing, that everything is ok, offer up some free services to keep them coming in.... I think an oil change is probably the easiest way to get a customer to come back in. Your really not out much if your having the grunts do it, and your techs get an opportunity to take a look for anything else.

Anotehr big thing I do is line work up for naother day. Just because the customer tells me they cant afford it right now, doesnt mean I cannot get them setup with a time to get the work done. I also break the rules alot with our CC, rules state that its supposed to be over 100 dollars for 90 days SAC, or over 500 for 6month SAC..... ALot of times I will run it anyways, and eat the extra charge to help my customer, I think its an extra ten of fifteen dollar charge from citi to us for running a SAC thats under the limits.....But hey, so I ran it at 80, meaning we get 70, which would have been 15 if I hadnt... so do the math.

Hardest part of it all, is to stay positive when its slow. Too many times you ge three or four in that just ruin your drive so you just dont want to try anymore. Gotta keep the spirits up, and keep pushing for the nex tticket that come sout.

Question for you, how do you combat the cutthroat actions when it gets slow, and all the commision guys are basically fighting for scraps or whatever they can get..... WE have litterally taken to assigning who is to inspect a car for the grunts that are doing the LOFR, too many of our guys will forget about what theya re alreayd working on, stop and go inspect another car just so they can be the one to get paid for it...Problem is that it is affecting the quality of work for the vehicles they are already working on...

As for the job, yeah, I'm happy to have one. Not sure I'm thrilled with the industry I'm in right now, however. Too many hours spent running around after excuse makers and corner cutters. Kinda lame right now.

Front Range, dude...
If I was unemployed, I would have more time to screw off, ride bikes, ski, play hockey and scratch my balls. But then I could not afford to screw off, ride bikes, ski, play hockey and scratch my balls. Damn the man...always keepin an honest bruttha down.

Work is simply a means to an end...
