Hey guys

I tried searching for a definitive answer, but I couldn't really find one.

I picked up some new mavic 823's that I want to run tubeless and I attempted to convert my 2.35 kenda dh wirebead casing but I couldn't get the beads to set properly so I could inflate. People who I've talked to told me its a major PITA and they wouldn't retry. I figured I pickup a set of minion UST specific tires for these wheels.

Anyone whose run maxxis minion UST specific tires on mavic 823's willing to give some input?Do they have a weaker sidewall compared to their nonust counterparts? Does the 823 rip the sidewalls since its stiff?

I'm thinking about running the minion UST dhf 42a front and a UST dhr 60 rear on my mavic 823s

Thanks

A buddy of mine who races collegiate ECCC tried racing on UST Minion DHF's with his 823's... He races Men's A (Cat 1), weighs around 190lbs. and has his suspension set up fairly plush with adequate bottom-out. He cut the sidewall on his rear Minion while at a race where the course was maybe a 5 or 6 on a scale of 1 to 10 in rockiness and I'm pretty sure he was running pressures in the mid-30's. The sidewalls don't rip so much as get cut (snakebite) when the rim bottoms out on the tire during hard imacts.

The non-UST Maxxis tires seems to have a tougher sidewall but the 823's ARE made of a very dent-resistant metal. Both the UST and non-UST Maxxis DH tires are described as having the same construction, but to my observation, (fingernail test) the UST sidewalls feel thinner. (this could simply be because the non-UST tire carcass is made from a stiffer fabric matrix...)

I used a DHF UST on my front wheel (with an EX 823 rim) for about 3 months of resort riding, and it held up just fine until I got too loose and dinged my wheel on a big rock. There was no visible damage but the tire wouldn't hold air tubeless anymore. For all I know, the same may have happened to a normal DH tire.

On the topic of non-UST tires, I've been able to mount normal DHR, Highroller, and DHF tires to my 823 rim with a scoop of Stan's and the diesel air compressor at my local gas station. A normal tire pump was never enough to seat the tire, and it could be that a weaker air compressor for home use may not be enough either.

i run a 823 rear but dont run it tubeless anymore and getting non ust tires on that thing is a BITCH
Yes, I agree about non-UST being frustrating to mount. If you lather up the tire with soapy water and have someone help you, it's much more manageable.

I've been running tubeless hutchinson barracudas, ust minions and wetscreams on my 823 for 2 seasons now. No problems with cudas but I've cut my minions twice in one season. Still it's not bad considering that both cuts were not on sidewalls, one of them was because I had to overtake an idiot and go into shark rocks. I also ride on 16-20psi (though I'm light) so that may increase tire cuts.

Did you use stans on the minions and did they seal the cuts?

no experience with minions but i ran ust high roller 2.5s and wetscream 2.5 and had trouble with the sidewalls getting cut up by the rims. I ran the hutchinson baracudas and the sidewalls were great but kept getting little holes from sharp rocks etc. Think i'm giving up on tubeless for now. Too many punctures. However the lack of rolling resistance particularly with the baracudas is great.

Tried stans but the holes were always to big to seal up

I have been running non UST Minions on 823's with Stans for at least three seasons. With new tires, and a compressor I found mounting is relatively easy. Used tires however require a bit of coaxing and you got's to remove the hardened Stans latex gunk that's stuck to the bead or every attempt at inflating will result in spraying latex goop all over you and the garage, a limp ass tire on your $100 rim, and the loss of valuable sleep the night before your ride.

Bad experiences with tubeless 823's for me. I am just riding mine with tubes until they break...

Went through 9 NINE! tubeless tires this year because of weak sidewalls, ( i sold the tires after the hole as 95% life left and made the money back) I will never EVER make that mistake again. From now on its DH casing ghetto rig

What tire were you using?

Ran UST minions and 823's for the 3 races I did last year, on a fairly rocky course(skibowl) running ~25 psi and had no flats in practice or race, using 2 scoops of stans.(weigh 175#)

To help with installing them, especially wire bead tires, use a bristle brush and soapy water on the bead before inflating.

I'm pretty much done with UST Minions, Highrollers, ect. The bead interface just doesn't have enough material on the bead to withstand tears. I've landed a little sideways a couple times and torn the bead to the point that Stans can't get in there to seal it...

I'm gonna run standard 3c models for now, but I'm trying Continental Der Kaisers or Rubber Queens when I get a new DH sled built up.

I have had ZERO problems with my wheels, and I have that Minion UST / 823 setup. I like to ride all types of terrain (except mud). They are exponentially easier to put on compared to the Kendas. Yeah, I know, UST vs. non-UST, but you're buddy is right, Kendas are a PITA to install. I've used lots of Kendas and lots of Maxxis, and overall, the Maxxis tires have been WAY easier to install. I say, do it and don't worry about it.

I have written about this before on RM and there are plenty of writing about 823 and Maxxis UST.

For some they work fine for other not so good. I ride super rocky courses and have no problem. I am 160lbs and ride light on the bike and do not race. Check the tire pressure before every day of riding and I have had very little problems and only cuts that Stans could seal.

Why even thing so much about it. Just give them a try and see what happens its only a set of tires. An if you cut them you can always put in a tube.

Ran the setup for a year and never liked it... you are better off running tubes.
You will flat more with the 823/Minion tubeless setup than a good tube setup.
When running tubeless you are better off running just rear. When you run the setup up front it will roll around a bit more because you don't have the added support of the inner tube and kind of throws you off line.

Best setup you can run is a light weight rim.. I use a Mavic 721 with a rim strip like a Maxxis rim strip but I have seen riders use BMX tubes cut in half and stretched over, Then put Stans sealant in the tire and stick it on the rim.. The BMX tube/ Rim strip will protect the tire from cutting and you can ding the rim hard and the tire will never loose any air.

The 823 rim is a great rim and is super strong... but its almost to strong for racing.

On the other hand you may be a light weight racer in which case you should be ok! Try testing the front though.. if you have UST tires it may be ok... but it is a little weird sometimes...
