The 802
rumor i heard last Fall was Minnaar wanted a bike that was lower/slacker/shorter travel and was going to elsewhere unless Santa Cruz swallowed their pride and redesigned the V10 substantially. The post season 'testing' while not officially on or off the team suggests this might be the case. . . . or not.

This was, of course, just a rumor but now I'm curious to see what their bikes look like for 2010.

I have not looked to closely but wouldn't the Driver 8 with tweeked geo and a lighter tubeset fit the bill?

the Driver 8 geo is pretty close to the V10 and i believe has a slacker head tube, shorter WB, lower BB
yet hardly anyone rides them and the team don't use them. I would have thought they would gave opted for them at the worlds

dont know why. its not like 8" of travel isnt enough
Well I guess things turned out ok on the V10 seeing as it was in the first two spots. I don't think it's about what is "enough"; it's about what goes fast and wins races and the V10 does that to perfection.

All I know is that the Driver 8 is heavier, which surprised me. I think if they had kept it lighter they would have sold more.

I'm not sure how much heavier, and to be fair, I got this information from one of the top East Coast pros who has ridden a V10 for a few years. He stated that he was excited about the bike until he found out that it was "a lot" heavier. Apparently it was meant to be more of a freeride/ huck bike that could also be used for racing. Take that for what it's worth but I would think that a Scaled down version of the V10 would be lighter and apparently that is not the case. Either way, we all know a lot of the WC bikes use lighter tubing etc., etc., so I would think that wouldn't be an issue. And yeah, seems like it would have been a good choice for worlds, of course the results prove that to be a moot point.

Yes, its much heavier then the v10. Also, static geometry is almost the same as the v10, but the v10 has an extra 2 inches of travel and sags alot more. The rate is alot more "built for plow" then the D8 from what I understand. It definitely feels that way!

If you use the santacruz bike builder;

the Driver 8 is 40.81 lbs with Boxxer World Cup, DH team kit and ano. orange.

The V10 is 40.12 lbs with Boxxer World Cup, DH team kit and ano. green.

As accurate as their bile builder may be I wouldn't say the Driver 8 is much heavier, but a little heavier none the less

No comparison between the Driver 8 and V10. If you look at the static geometry, the Driver 8 appears to be a bit more slack. But as others have mentioned, with the two extra inches of travel, the V10 actually sits lower. I don't know about the leverage rations and such, but every review I've seen states that the Driver 8 is no mini V10. In fact, while they state the Driver 8 is a fine bike, it's missing something. You know, that something that both the Nomad and V10 both possess, the Driver 8 just lacks it. Read the review in Dirt, if you will. PLUS, why would Minnaar want less travel? Peat & Minnaar finished 1-2 at worlds this year, and IIRC, they won 5 of the WCs last year; sounds like a pretty damn good bike to me!

Back on topic, this is great news. I'm sick of people switching teams every year or two.

I really don't think the amount of travel (w/in certain limits of course) is as relevant as other factors for someone at Greg's level. His Honda was actually less than 8" of travel if memory serves me correctly. He can win on any well designed bike.

I'm pretty suprised the V10 is still around. It's the last super long travel DH race bike that's still competative. I would think Greg wants something more firm, with better rear wheel feel, that's easier to lift over stuff instead of running it over.

Obviously he's super fast on it as is Peaty, but maybe Greg feels he'd be .2 sec faster on an 8" bike and win more races???

That being said, the bike is incredibly light, plush and bottomless, great for the average guy like me, who still likes 9" travel DH bikes like my Ventana. If it's still selling really well then SC will want them on it and get more out of the manufacturiing investment they have in it. I mean- they didn't even change the stroke of the shock on it for the public this year to be like the team bikes.

No matter what they replace it with it will be a big seller. Peat is a big factor to what sells to the UK market. Its funny how everyone slags the Sam Hill fan boys but there is just as many Peat fan boys. Were i ride there is far more people on V10s than on 224s it wasn't that way a few years ago. As soon as Peat went to Santacruz the 222s and 223s went up for sale.

I am totally content with my v10. I am sure 8 inches of travel could be fine, but I have a little more confidence with the 9. Especially on the east coast.

But ever since I started riding a lot of xc i kind of like a little less travel because it feels more flickable and like it is not a waste of time to pump.

Why don't you get a Driver 8 then. It would be just like your V10 but only 8 inches a travel.

If you guys can get your hands on Dirt Mag, I forget the Issue Number, but they did a direct comparison between the two and as lot to say between the D8 and V10.

Quick synopsis: "D8 sucks. Why is SC making it?" Is what I got from the article.

DIRT HQ, chime in?

All that aside, how old is Peaty gonna be when this contract is over? 38? DOING WORK!

I weighed a Driver 8, with axle and seat collar I think it came out to around 10.3lbs. with powdercoat , 400# steel spring and a vivid. Medium size.
I'm not sure if I could tell the difference between the Driver 8 and a V-10 while riding.
Also, not racing related, but the seat tube angle makes the Driver a much more versatile bike for pedaling.

I doubt if SC would let them even if they wanted to. Racing World Cups on the Driver 8 would kill the market for V10s pretty much overnight, surely?

I doubt it. I'm sure there's still m6s being sold despite the 951. The driver 8 seems to have had a very small uptake. Im sure SC would love to sell those aswell.

Peaty is a marketers dream, espcially this side of the atlantic, he appeals to everyone especially guys in their 30's.
Probably sounds uncool or something, but I like the Santa Cruz company. As a 12 year old in the 80's I really wanted one of Rob Roskopps Santa Cruz face decks, but i had to make do with my ****ty variflex.

I can afford a santa cruz bike now, but it hasn't happened, just because the look of the bikes don't appeal to me, dont know why something I don't like, I dont look at them and really desire one. Instead I have an intense dh bike.
