looking for feedback on new tire set-up for my XC/AM bike. trails around here are mostly dusty hardpack. last season i ran nevegals fr/rr then switched to a wtb weirwolf fr. seemed to work well but roll a little slow. looking at kenda nevegals or small block 8s, maybe some weirwolf LTs? will run tubeless. any suggestions?

I run a 2.5 tubeless Nevegal up front and a 2.5 or 2.35 (can't remember what size) Tinker Juarez tire out back, tubeless also. The Juarez tire rolls pretty quick and grips pretty good. I usually like running something out back that rolls pretty fast on my AM bike. I've run a small block before. It rolled fast, but didn't grip worth a sh!t on anything. Not even on hardpack.

I'm running 2.4 conti mountain king protections on my xc/trail hardtail. The black chili compound is great and they seem to work really well in a variety of conditions, roll fast, and wear well. I have mine set up tubeless with stans, and they seem to do really well with lower pressures.

AM = All Mountain

I like my Kenda Nevegals as well...I have the 2.35 UST version on my Yeti 575 and have been pleased with them. You might also want to look at the blue grooves for dusty hardpack, they will offer a little better rolling resistance.

Yeah I have the Mountain King 2.4 pro black chili tubeless too. One ride on them, in the extreme wet on a mostly rock armoured trail. Excellent stickum. But I would think the knobs are a bit much for dry conditions. Then I'll use the Racing Ralph 2.4, a big 2.4 and 2.2 on the rear. Always tubeless.

currently testing schwalbe rocket rons just trying to plan the next tires due to these being a xc race tire not sure they will hold up long roll super fast though

Maxxis Advantage 2.4's on everything anymore. Love them...big volume, relatively light and wear really well.
you must not race :D

I did monkeyfest bend back in 07 with Heidi, Captain, Echo, Dayv and isabelle, and ran Igniter front and rear for super grip but i'm confident if you have some skill the igniter/crossmark would be a great setup.
yea im currently running karma 2.2 front, 2.0 back, but running kenda tubeless is annoying

Really?
I've been running those on my bike and I don't like them at all.
Just don't seem to hook up well for me, been losing the front on a regular basis and spinning out the rear on pinch climbs (probably my riding style but you get that), I'm thinking of trying some Nevegals next..... Although I'm quite tempted to say "Damn the weight" and stick some high rollers on it.

Well, I didn't mind running Tubeless until this weekend. I was in Saint George just doing some mellow trail riding. Ended up rolling over a piece of shale that broke and ripped a hole in my tubeless Kenda TJ tire. Tire went flat fast. I had to put a tube in it. I'm going back to tubes. I ran tubes for three years and never had a weird issue like that. I put a few little tears in tires and they didn't go flat. That was a lot of money on a tire that didn't even get ridden for two months before it became a normal tire. Maybe I'm too heavy to run them. I'm about 207 without gear in my peak riding season.

Were you following proper Kenda tire maintenance and changing the air in the tires every 2 hours of ride time? Thats the recommended time frame given on Kenda's website under the technology section..

Seriously though does the tire 'know' its only 2 months old? Maybe the tire was actually 9 months old but it sat on the shelf at your LBS for 7 months before purchase? Should return it because they sold you an old tire..

If you can't afford to replace a $65 tire with another $65 tire you probably shouldn't be riding $65 tires..

XC = 2.1 ADvantage front, 2.1 Crossmark rear
AM = 2.35 Minion front, 2.35 HighRoller rear or 2.25 Ardent front, 2.25 ADvantage rear
How do you like that AM set up with the Minions and the HR? I was planning on doing it. I am in the PNW, so we get from dry to wet muddy trails. I want something grippy, that gives me confidence on the turns but at the same time that are not crazy slow.

Changing the air every 2 hours? Are you effen serious? Why the hell would you have to do that? Is the air inside the tire going to get polluted with something when it's in a sealed environment?

Does the tire know it's only 2 months old. Good god man. Who the hell are you? You're killing me here. The tire isn't old. There's no dry rot on it. If I'm buying a mountain bike tire for $65, that tire better hold up longer than a $13 dollar tire. In this case, it didn't. Putting a tube into a $65 dollar tubeless tire is just ridiculous. It defeats the purpose. I don't go out and buy something expensive with the intention of replacing it before it really even gets worn out. That's like saying "If you can't afford to replace your $30,000 car with another one when you have a problem with it, then why are you driving a $30,000 car?"
I bought the tire hoping it would last and keep from going flat. That wasn't the case. Good god. Really? Change the air every two hours. That's some funny sh!t. Not even the pros that ride for Kenda do that crap.
Get a life man.

sorry I didn't put the [sarcasm] tags on. I didnt think you'd read my post literally....

Your reaction to my post is even more hilarious than you intial whiny post.

btw its not at all like saying dont buy a $30,000 car if you cant replace it. maybe you could compare bike to car but not tire to car.

I bet you are the kind of person that would buy snow tires for their car, slide through an intersection on an icy day and then go back to the shop you bought them from complaining that their grip is as good as summer tires...

Yeah, you've got me pegged. In case you couldn't tell by my avatar, I'm a car fanatic. I know how tires work, dork. When it comes to driving and riding, it's 80% driver/rider.

Your sarcasm wasn't noted because it wasn't even funny. Try being either a little more serious, or a little more sarcastic.

I'll admit, i read your email while I was moody. Buy you have to admit, your humor was pretty damn dry.

I might try that new Lopes rear tire. Can't remember what it's called. BBG or something like that. It'll have a damn tube in it though. Tubeless. Blah.

I've been really digging this Specialized Chunder 2.3 front and Maxxis Highroller 2.35 rear. Very consistent breaking, excellent cornering and very predictable. I was running a Minion DHF 2.35 front before this, but ripped a sidewall and had this chunder laying around. I actually am really digging this Chunder. I wish Maxxis would make a 2.4 in the DHF there tires are still a lil small.

I decided to buy the Minions DHF for the fron and the Highroller in the back. Loved the DHF in the front, awesome grip, but same thing I wich they were wider (I bought the 2.35) I knew they run small, but they are smaller than I thought. I didn't go with a 2.5 because since this is my AM ride, that I pedal around a lot, I didn't want to have a 1400gr tire. But still the 2.35 rides really good.

The highroller in the back was nice, seemed to roll pretty good. Felt a bit slippery in some situations but still, pretty happy with it.

On thing I noticed was how when I was going of drops, the tires seemed to cushion the landing, so I felt like I had more suspension, really nice feeling. They went over everything without any issues. Like I said, over all very happy with them.

Are you thinking a tubed tire would not have torn open? It sounds to me like you were just unlucky enough to have the tire torn. I've done that. It sucks but that's life. If you run over something big and sharp it might damage any tire tubeless or not. No tire can defend itself from big sharp things. Not unless it has heavy armour of some sort. Heck I have had rocks go through truck tires numerous times.

I'm kinda interested to try out some of those Conti Rubber Queens... heard good things.
Skared, the guys in the shop I ride for are liking them quite a bit. I just put a set of Mountainkings with black chili rubber on my wheels. Running them tubeless and they are very good around here on soupy wet trails and on wet wood and rocks. I hear though that the cheaper conti's with hard rubber are crappy. Stck with German made black chili and your golden.

"am" = "All Mountain" =

I want to be considered a tough guy, I have very few skills, and I expect my bike's "kit" as an "All Mountain" ready bike to make a big statement about what kind of tough guy I am.

Nobody needs a different tire for "all mountain" than they would use for "trail riding" or "cross country."

It's just a way for weenies to feel like Big Willies.

Personally, I like Maxxis Ardent tires. They might not have enough tread to handle TRUE ALL MOUNTAIN RIDING though. I'm not sure I'm enough of a tough guy to ride that gnarly, hairy ALL MOUNTAIN stuff.

I know a normal tire would've torn, but the tube might not have been punctured. Plus, a standard tire wasn't going to cost as much as a tubeless tire did. I wouldn't be that butt hurt if a normal tire got a tear in it. I'd just put some Goop on it and ride another time. But you can't really do that with a tubeless tire. You have to put a tube in it, then do that. Then it's pretty much a standard tire that cost too damn much.

Sorry, didn't see this til now. The HR is my all-time favorite tire. Have not yet come across a situation that I didn't feel confident with them on. The Minion has mixed reviews from me so far for AM use. It is a 60 duro, so not that sticky, but it has a rounder profile than the HR. I have noticed that it does not break away as predictably, but seems to offer good traction most of the time. Assuming that your terrain is similar enough to mine, I would say that it is a great tire combination and have no hesitation recommending it.

If a tire has a tear in it that sealant or a patch won't plug, it would be toast as a tubed tire as well as the tube will bulge out the hole and/or dirt will get in a puncture the tube. Regular tires are generaly cheaper though. It has been my experience that regular tires puncture and tear morte esily than UST tires. UST is refered to by some as DH light as the extra rubber of the casing makes thenm a bit stronger and stiffer.

I see tires and wheels though as consumable parts on a bike. If you ride often and hard you will go through these parts fairly often. Of course a person may elect to go with more heavy duty stuff to avoid replacement at the expense of performance. To some performance is measured solely by durablity some by ride quality.

I rode tubes with slime for three years and didn't get a single flat. Got my tubeless setup and went for about 7 months and got a flat. Lame.
I've torn a bit on a DH tire before and just Gooped it so it would last. Ended up lasting an entire season. I guess it depends on the tear. But the tear in my tubeless tire is actually smaller than the one i fixed on the DH tire. Still won't go back to tubeless though. I didn't enjoy putting a tube into a tire that had a bunch of Stans pouring out of it.
