My wife is a neurophychologist, so I asked her...that girl most likely has Guillain Barr Syndrome It's basically a disease in which the body damages its own nerve cells (outside of the brain and spinal cord), resulting in muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis. GBS can last for weeks to months. Most people eventually recover completely or nearly completely, but some people have permanent nerve damage and between 5% and 6% of people who develop GBS die. GBS affects people of both sexes and all ages, and has been reported in all races. Although extremely rare, according to the CDC, flu shots are listed not to be taken for people with a history of Guillain–Barré Syndrome.

honestly, i'm no tin-foil hatter, but the rate at which pharmaceutical companies had to rush to produce/test a vaccine for H1N1 makes you wonder was missed in clinical trials.
I don't know much on the back story on this, but don't vaccines also have to go through all 3 phases of clinicals for approval? What was the time frame of the development of this vaccine?

I'm sure the Ferrelly Brothers would love that clip. They should make a movie.

Sara always has to get flu shots, being a nurse and all... The last one she got screwed up her shoulder, but that was more a problem with the administration of the shot, rather than the ingredients.

I've never had a flu shot of any kind. Partly too lazy, partly due to seeing folks that get it feel like crap for a few days. All after having filled out forms and waited in lines...

I'll stick to just getting sick without all the formalities, thanks.

Although I can't get one anymore I have never gotten a flu shot. Basically because I don't think I have ever gotten the flu. The immune system is strong in this one.

She's like a drunken, spastic, kinda hot female Peewee Herman.

Though, could you imagine how rad a HJ from her would be?
Like a hot Terry Schaivo milking you out.

dunno, honestly. but it was pretty rushed if you think about it: when did we first start hearing about swine flu? when did the WHO start getting worked up and demand a vaccine? now we have a vaccine?

also, i think we all can realize that the FDA (and probably their clinical trials) are a load o' bollox...

The injectable H1N1 vaccine is the same as the other flu vaccines in years past, only with a different strain of flu in it. They can make it quickly because they already have the genetic components of the H1N1 (as well as many many other strains) so they culture the virus, kill it, and inject the dead virus bits into you. They make a new flu vaccine every year based on the predicted dominant strain, so making a new vaccine in a few months is not that revolutionary, or dangerous.

The nasal vaccine is a live attenuated vaccine. It is a wimpy virus. Similar to several other vaccines that most or all of you have received (ie the measles, mumps, rubella shot or MMR).

Vaccines, particularly live ones do very rarely cause Guillain Barre Syndrome, GBS, which is a temporary paralytic disease that is nearly always self limited. Don't get me wrong, it sucks, but nearly no one dies of it, while people die of flu. The mortality among patients hospitalized with H1N1 is highest among young adults...so I got my shot. I can still walk, talk, breath and think. It's sweet.

It always blows me away that people get worked up about vaccines. Every medical treatment has risk. But the risks associated with vaccines are largely speculative if not completely made up and the real ones are substantially less than many common medications that you or people in your famliy use without thinking of it. If you read the risks associated with the birth control pills you or your S.O. is using, you'd freak out about that too.

Finally, the lady in that video does not have GBS because if she did, she have partial or complete paralysis and would not be running around. I don't know what she "has", but I call BS...particularly in light of the fact that it came on Inside Edition, which is why I laughed at her as well...

PROTIP: don't mess with sh.tty vaccines unless you NEED them. Just not worth the risk. Like the HPV vaccine...people die from that crap...but it's "safe". Not for my kids...
Yeah, you'll kids will never have sex and be at risk for HPV  Many HPV cases never show symptoms and can go undiagnosed for a long time. HPV could strip your daughter of her ability to have kids, because you feared she might be part of the .001% that have an issue with a vaccine.

Or I could teach her about safe sex and make sure she's smart enough to use condoms.

AND the HPV vaccine they use doesn't cover all kinds of HPV. It covers the ones that cause MOST cases of cervical cancer, but not all. If you're talking about a super secret case of HPV/undetectable cervical cancer, it's probably not covered by that vaccine.

But thanks for your opinion.

Yes, the video of the women who was thought to have adverse effect is just typical sensational BS media highlighting possible extreme rare adverse reactions (like winning the lottery) - the first reported case and it turned out it was likely psychogenic not the flu shot.

I also know someone with an extreme peanut/aflatoxin allergy. About 10-15 years ago she was accidentally exposed to a product with peanuts in them, she nearly died in the hospital and has reduced mental facilities as a result. Like the women in the youtube video, she hit the wrong lottery only her result is even worse and not in her head. Neither extreme outlier means anything for almost the entire population.

The anti-vaccine people (like the infamous Dr Wakefield, guilty of using fake data) have been scientifically disproven countless times and are mostly in it for self interest reasons. We aren't talking about new technology here either, thiomersal been in use for over 80 years and administered literally billions of time and vaccinations have saved millions of lives. Its also in tattoo ink and the amount of thiomersal used today in vaccines is far less than in the past.

The amount of mercury in a vaccine is about the same as a serving of canned tuna and less than that servings of fresh tuna steaks and other fish like shark, swordfish, etc. Not only that but the kind of mercury (methylmercury) in fish takes much longer for the body to eliminate than that in vaccines. Numerous peer reviewed studies have show this, one google result.

People should consult the experts with the background, authority, and rigorous peer reviewed scientific studies to comment on these issues - medical doctors, scientists and other health experts. The media, joe sixpack, ridemonkey members etc have no ground to stand on, no authority whatsoever.

^^^ Well said.

On a humorous note, what does it mean if you satisfy criteria as a medical doctor, a laboratory scientist, joe sixpack, and a RM member?? 2-2=0?

While some backgrounds help with a more rational understanding its a pretty broad field and merely being doctor or scientist in an unrelated field is not the same thing as someone whose career revolves around it.
