myself and some locals were thinking about heading south tomorrow to find some dirt to ride. Everything is still snow covered here. We were wanting to hit up dark mountain.

Can someone give me a good idea on loop to take. I want to make sure I hit the right downhills.

Is the total mileage of this place 7.5 miles if you cover everything?

trail conditions would be good too, if anyone has been there in the passed few days; we heard that everything was good from another local who was down there about a week ago.

thanks!

I heard that most of the snow was gone and the trails were pretty muddy today. Dark mountain is cool but I think I'd rather ride at warrior creek campground just down the road. Very cool swoopy trails.

I would expect things to be pretty slick but the weather is supposed to be great tomorrow so it might tack up. Not too sure on route specifics or mileage there.

I spoke with a guy who ran OVT on Friday and said it was extremely muddy. The freeze & thaw is killing the riding. One of the trail crew went out to cut trees today so when it does get better they should at least be somewhat cleared.

As for distance, Dark Mtn is around 7.5 miles, OVT is about 8.5 miles & Warrior Creek is a little over 11 miles and growing.

We have our first race on April 4th (6 Hours of Warrior Creek) so be sure to mark your calendar.

I ended up not going due to the conditions, I don't want to mess up someones trail work. I saw some pretty recent trail work dates from warrior creek and the trail bed looked fresh from a few, maybe 4-5 months ago so I'd imagine after the freeze/thaw it would be super soft.

Are Dark Mountain and Warrior Creek within riding distance of each other, can you loop them together if I wanted to check them out all at once?

You can link pretty much everything in the area via OVT.

Warrior creek was decent today. About 50/50, some dry spots some muddy spots. It was sloppy but there were a few people out and things didn't seem to be rutting up too badly on most of it. It looks like some rain may be coming this week but a few sunny days in a row would dry things up pretty well.

Hopefully wilkesboro dries up soon because we are still nowhere close to riding up the mountain in Boone.

If you're up for it you can get in 50 miles by linking all three systems together.:D

Park at the Visitors Center. From there take OVT. OVT ends at Bandit Roost Campground. When you get to the campground take the paved road back out to Hwy 268. Make a right onto Hwy 268 & ride for about 2.5 miles or so. You'll cross a bridge and then start going uphill. A little over half way up the hill on the right is the road to Warrior Creek (you'll see signs). Follow that in & hit up WC. Once you've finished the WC loop head on back down the road & ride OVT back to the Visitors Center. From there ride over & hit Dark Mtn.

Its a heck of ride.:thumb:
