Massive 8.8 quake in chile. many riders are still there for a second event, including a bunch of RM members. Tsunami warning for Valparaiso.

So far cnn says no major structural damage in santiago, but we have friends in concepcion who work at the urban race.

Fingers crossed everyone.

Whoa... wonder if it has anything to do with the tectonic plate activity near Japan - there was a quake yesterday near the islands of Okinawa that registered about a 6 or 7.

Hope everyone is OK in Chile and Valpo stays dry.

I am talking to friends in Santiago, trust me, 350miles away is making no difference. (la parva is literally on the outskirts of downtown santiago.) There are buildings down, fires, and a 9' tsunami measured out to sea.

The airport is damaged badly and the road to la parva is closed.

Power and phones are down. Cell data is working, but not voice.

Fraser:

Do you know if any of the guys at La Parva have cell service down there? I know Mikey doesn't, and the news here isn't good. The mom in me is starting to get worried, and I was raised in California.

BTW, it's 300km from Concepcion to Santiago, not 350 miles. Big difference!

Kris: No cell service in santiago except for data. All land lines are down as is voice cell service. La parva is probably doing fine. I spoke with some friends who spoke to friends up at the track and they were fine.

from Justin/lucent:

Hey friends & family we are all ok. We were woke up at 3:45 to the room shaking. Craziest scariest **** ever. We are out of power up in the hills but all fine. Will make calls later if we find Internet.

Anyone have a list of the riders/friends who are with Justin? I saw on fb that Filip & Dave are ok. How about CVD? Needles? Victor? etc etc etc...

All the N. American crew, Needles, and Filip are staying together at La Parva, so I'm assuming Justin's message refers to all of them being okay. Not sure if Victor is with them or not.

got an e-mail from Mikey, and they're all okay up there. No power, no phones, race is cancelled, road to Santiago is closed and the airport is closed due to major damage. But the guys are all together up there, and they're all okay, just don't know when they'll be able to leave the country.

Good to hear that apparently all is okay. Rumor is the race is cancelled?
I'd love an email/call from Karl and James.

Got an email from Victor, the race organizer. Here's what he had to say:
im sending this to you as i have just been with our group of guest riders who are staying at a mountain village outside santiago called farellones, the whole group is in perfect condition and will probably be spending today riding in the nearby mountains.
as you all know a very strong earthquake has hit our country and infrastructure is now operative for probably 1 or 2 more days, santiago airport is closed and highways are quite collapsed, happily farellones is one of the places less hit with no problems of any kind and we have all found it best for the group to stay there until more certainty is reached about their respective flights out of chile. more info as we have it but i think electricity will be back on in farellones during the day.

My heart felt sympathies to all Chileans , I hope everything works out for the better :thumb:

We here in NZ are currently on Tsunami warning and in 20 minutes I may have to evacuate to higher ground  . It just so happens that the Port Hills are close by so I may as well spend the day DHing :weee:

Wish us the best and hope it doesn't happen :)

All of the foreigners are hanging out in Farallones. I spoke to some friends staying with them as translators/handlers and they are all ok. No power, no net and no phones - but they are going riding today as they have nothing better to do.

The airport, highway and road to the mountain are all closed though, so the guys may be stuck there a day or 2 more.

yes, race is cancelled according to the info I got from La Parva. No power, no one can get up there. the big question now is when they'll be able to get out

I will continue to update transcend with info on all of the foreign riders as soon as I get any new information. Stay tuned.
Hey Transcend, in one of your previous posts you said you were able to send text messages, but that there was no voicemail, email, etc. What kind of service do you have that allows you to send international text messages? i was always under the impression that canadian carriers don't allow international texts? I may be wrong.

My girlfriends' entire extended family is in Concepcion and Vina del Mar, and we're without word. It's an incredibly stressful time.

this sucks. :(

Sly, I have rogers and send and receive intl texts all the time while travelling. Rogers even has intl text packs now to make it cheap.

I just did a skype interview with polc and cvd who are still in santiago, it is uploading now and should be ready to go shortly on transcend. Also received a cool video of them having lunch as an aftershock hit.

If anyone hears from or talks to any of the guys still in Chile, please ask them to ask Mikey to call me. Trying to figure how how we're going to get him home

Thanks!

Jesus...

...this was WAY worse than I had expected... on the one hand it's good to know that el gringos (Justin, CVD, Dave Trump, Polcster, Needles, Micayla, and everyone) are OK, but on the other hand, the death, destruction, and caranage is absolutely INSANE... the first pics I saw from the boston news link on the other page reminded me of the pics of the collapsed highway in California during the quake of 89'... but the more info you get from around the net and other news sources, the broader the damage and loss of life seems to be...

First Haiti, now this...

Thoughts and prayers with the Chileans and their families effected by this.

Update: A few of the gringos are taking an 8hr drive later tonight to Mendoza to get outta here via > Buenos Aires > Sao Paulo > USA or elsewhere. I just confirmed a flight outta Santiago Friday night so I guess my 'vacation' has been extended a few extra days. Luckily the race promoter Victor is THE MAN and got us hotels in a super nice area of Santiago away from the chaos. You wouldnt think that an earthquake hit by walking the streets around here. Us gringos are in an unmeasurable debt to Victor after this whole ordeal and everything he's done to get us rides, find us places to stay, and orchestrate and accommodate over a dozen riders from a handful of countries. Can't thank him enough, its amazing the hospitality and friendliness here. I only hope the country and all my new Chilean friends are able to regroup after this horrible tragedy. We have all counted our blessings that on a day when buildings were collapsed, people perished, and lives were turned upside down, we were still able to go on our day and take shuttle runs. Something we might have taken lightly before Fri/Sat but def all appreciating it even more that our biggest worry now is finding a flight home.

what he said...

If the drive to Medoza goes to plan and flights all work out I might be home late Wed. morning

as for the destruction in Chile, just wait a few more days until more news comes out. The major news networks are obviously focusing on the cities right now, but there are huge rural populations everywhere here and the fate of those ares has not really been touched on yet. we are getting some info here now and it is not good.

right now justin and I are on the 12th floor of a hotel and we just got shaken by an aftershock... 250 miles from epicenter. these have been happening multiple times a day for the past three days and are only making things in the hardest hit areas worse.
