anyone ever strip the PC off of their handlebars?

the paint on my Deity bars is chipping off in some spots. it mainly from the brake clamps and i want to just strip the paint off and not deal with it anymore.

what have some of you used? aircraft stripper? easy off?

Bet a paint / pc shop would blast them fairly reasonably. Better than buying stripper and having to deal with the mess.

i stripped my d30. just used some polystrippa i had kicking about. took a couple applications, but didn't put up much of a fight. spray on aircraft / aluminum paint stripper would be more effective. available everywhere. bar polished up nicely without too much work.

I reckon that paint stripper is viable for stripping a bike, but for handlebars you're probably better off just sanding the paint off, it might be a good idea to leave the paint where the stem covers it too, then you still have the centering lines etc.
I stripped mine by sanding them but I left the area under the stem and where the grips go untouched (I wasn't runing lock on grips at the time and didn't want to compromise them sliding off or something...just food for thought). But once your stem and grips are on you can't see those bits anwyay

Yep, Airplane Stripper works great on most powercoats. I've even used it on frames, but a frame is a major PIA with all the welds and tight areas. A pair of smooth bars will be easy. Ohh, wear long heavy duty rubber gloves and eye protection. That stuff burns when you get it on your skin and don't get it off right a way.

Aircraft stripper works great. The aerosol stuff sucks IMO, get the brush on stuff and apply it super thick. Let it sit for at least half an hour then take some scotch-brite to it, should come off really easy. You may have to re-apply to a few areas. Also keep a bucket of water on hand because you are very likely to get some on you at some point, plus if you dip your gloves in before you take them off they will last alot longer.

Cheaper and easier, get them media blasted.

What the hell is aircraft stripper? I've never heard of it but was thinking of doing the same to my bars just yesterday.

then id say that a couple dollars cheaper than getting a shop to blast off the paint.
like everyone said its gravy to do. i've used a pc of cardboard to scrap the paint off in the past as to not scratch the finish. just a thought.

But oh noez, what about the mess..haha :)

how well does it work on ano???

I have an ano'd frame and want to strip it so bad and powdercoat it... did I mention how badly I want this done...

any imput>?
if you're going to have it powdercoated, you might as well spend the extra $20 at the paint shop to have them media blast it for you.

yup, same results... some spots literally took the paint off when brushing the stripper on, and some spots took several applications of stripper and a little elbow grease.

whats funny about the above is that i am currently planning a bachelor party for a buddy. i guess i can just copy and paste the above into the itinerary?

haha. a little elbow grease with strippers never hurts.

i had the same scenario. most of the paint came right off without any effort.
