I am considering building a light wheelset for FR and was considering getting the mavic 721's and running Stans rim strips on it.

anyone have experience with this?

Also considering DT swiss FR600 with rim strips.

If not ill just stick with 823's but id really like a lighter wheelset since i don't plow through rock gardens or case nasty jumps often.

The 721's don't have an ideal internal shape for tubeless set up. It is a great rim, but it doesn't allow tubeless set-up very easily. The FR600, or even the FR500 from DT make better options. The most common rim we have been building lately is the Stan's Flow rim. Build those rims to Hope Pro II's and get yourself a wheelset under 1800g for less than $700.

The 721 does not have the best internal profile for tubeless, but in my experience they work fine once set up correctly. It helps to build up the rim bed with two layers of rim tape..and the correct stans strip for this rim also has some profiling to help the tire/bead seat and seal.

I have been running them for the past two years on the DH bike with both michelin and maxxis (non-ust) dh tires with no problems.

I ahve my 721's setup tubeless using a 20" tube ghetto style. For the rim tape under the tube one rim has a strip of Velox the other is just black nylon tape. I've had no issues with these as tubeless in 3 seasons

Thanks guys. I have two mavic 823's sitting in my living room so im trying tto decide what to use. I wanted light and tubeless but maybe im thinking after all the rim tape and rim strip it might start approaching the same weight.

I know the flows are strong and im running them on my AM bike with no complaints but id prefer a little more strength even if it is just for mental support.

Well i decided to just stick with the 823's since i already have two brand new rims. Got some hope hubs and DT swiss Comp spokes to lace them up with. Ill be saving some weight since ill be going tubeless and then im going to run conti Rubber Queens tires which are only 1150 grams.

Thanks for the advice. If it doesn't work out well i may try FR600's or another mavic.

I have two sets of 721's setup tubeless with stan's rim strips and I have had no issues in the last 1.5 years. I run anything from a minion 2.5 DHF 3c to a Spesh Clutch SX 2.3 and everything seals up.

My 721 rim with 20" tube / ghetto tubeless set up has been working great with a Maxxis Ardent non-UST tire. That said it was a pain to get it to seat and bead up. They may not be the best choice for tubeless, but it does work. You should be happy with the 823s, I have a set on Saint hubs for a burlier set up

i've only a rear rim setup with a 721, but with a couple layers of velox and the Stan's XM321/Rhyno-Lite strip it aired up no problem and has been running that way since. First tire on it was a WTB 2.5 wierwolf, then a 2.3 stout, currently running an Intens 909 2.5". All hold air fine. For burlier tires I think it holds the beat better than the Stan's Flow, FWIW.
