woohoo! i could be working the marathon and making overtime pay but instead i just paid $65 to hate myself for a couple of hours :D

i've always wanted to run a half..just to say i did it... so this is the year. unfortunately, i thought the race was in May and that I'd have plenty of time to train...but when i got back from a school 2 weeks ago, i realized that it's actually march 20th!
so my training regimen has been somewhat expedited. my running partner and i, (also a clydesdale at 225+lbs like me) did 8 miles last weekend and 11 miles yesterday at a 10.5 minute mile pace. feeling pretty good and ready for an additional 2.1 miles to my longest run, on saturday.

i'll be happy if i make it across the finish line around the 2.5 hour mark.

any other "husky" monkies ever run a 1/2 or full marathon? i think i'm gonna write "i hate running" across my back and ditch my shirt for the last mile ;)

stay hydrated, pace yourself. I aways carried a bottle of concentrated cytomax which is my sport drink that I used in training. A squirt of that it the aid station washed down with the cups of water that they pass out, plus a couple of GU's and I was good to go

train, train, train, train. And make sure you have good fitting shoes.

I have done a few, and the last one I did I tapered my training too much, and pushed too hard ~1:58 pace, and pretty much blew out my knee. Still hurting from it. Run at a pace that is too slow to begin with, as it will seem fast towards the end.
Most were run when I was 6'4" ~195+/- 8. The last was 210#, and I noticed the extra weight. (I note 6'4", as I'm now 6'3" 220, and running is quite a bit more difficult due to the weight addition.)

haha..training is done. i'm taking the rest of the week off from any leg work as the race is this saturday. i can handle 6-8 miles on any given day so doubling that wasn't too drastic to do in 2 weeks.
i bought some new shoes after my first training run as my old ones had obviously worn out and developed some hot spots on my feet. my new shoes are comfy...like putting my feet in rachel ray's big mouth ;)

You already ran 11 miles on your own for free, and now you've paid $65 to run two more?

I ran one last year on the spur of the moment type situation. The half way point was the longest run I had ever done.

All I can say is don't 'fly and die' take it easy and find your rhythm. I did it in 2 hours and 4 minutes. Old women beat me. I was happy to have finished though.

oh, and empty your bowels before you start. Nothing like looking for a place to drop a deuce in the middle of a race

My buddy is trying to get me to do a half. We've been doing 5Ks every month. Yesterday's race was in pouring rain with 50mph gusts. It was sort of fun because we ran part of the Boston St Paddys day parade route and there were all kinds of folks in parties cheering us on. Just before the end some kid was rolling his cooler full of Budlights and toppled it right at an intersection where a cop was holding traffic for the race. I started laughing and couldn't stop. Almost lost my lunch when I crossed the finish from laughing so hard.

I have a problem with going out too strong and blowing myself up.

Already have a 5 miler and 10k lined up for the summer. we'll see how those go before attempting a longer distance.

Pace is important. Everyone will go out faster than they plan to run, so cede yourself in the appropriate pace group. Walk through the water stations, staying hydrated will make for a much more enjoyable experience.
And look on the bright side, your lack of training will set the bar pretty low, ensuring a huge PR on the next one. There will be a next one right?

Finished!! did it in 2:35...just 5 minutes slower than what i planned to run. it was a little harder than i thought it would be, particularly over the last 3 miles, as my ankle and knee started to hurt pretty bad. but i'm stoked that i did it and now it's recovery time ;)

Nice work! I think I am bailing on a 10 mile run I had planned on doing in April. I'd rather spend the required training and recover time riding my bike.

i was hoping to do a short ride this afternoon so that my poor, neglected dog could get in a good run but i'm so sore that it's not gonna happen. i think i really jacked up my left knee/ankle; still getting that bone on bone feeling whenever i'm on my feet. hopefully it'll go away soon...

So like I was saying earlier about the knee...

Congrats on finishing. Roll your IT band before it tightens up more, and take warm showers/jacuzzi for stretching. Don't let your body tighten up, or the recovery will take much longer.

:stupid: Good luck and we'll expect a full race report (with pics or it didn't happen) :thumb:
report: running sucks. ;) the crowd was really cool, a mix of the hardcore types and folks like me who just want to do it for no apparent reason (there was a dude who ran it in a kilt...super awesome). i was expecting the elitist vibe, similar to the type found at any XC or road bike race but i was pleasantly surprised. to be honest..i felt like i was running in the special olympics as everyone was shouting "good job..you can do it!" etc ;)
i'm definitely glad i did it but i'm not sure if i'll do it again..at least without more training time; 2 weeks is just a bit short to get my big butt prepped for that long of a run. so anyway..a few pics i found on the marathon's website.

i can't imbed the pics 'cause they're on the stupid expensive photography site
