Stumbled across this, kinda hit home. Figured it was worth sharing:

http://bit.ly/bqn5sn

If anyone wants to know what XC racing is like in the Southeastern US, come on out to a ****ty suburb in Western Mass to ride one of the 5 best trails I've ever ridden.
If only Western MA wasn't the best place on earth to live and ride bikes, I'd move down to Athens or Gainesville and live in a tent if it meant I could ride 14mph twisty, smooth singletrack all day.

...

Sure, it's raining right now, winter sucks and we don't have a velodrome or indoor BMX track(a few underground skate parks though). People here in Western MA don't give a **** about the off-season, as the people I've met who are shred-heads around here usually are a little bit more multi-dimensional than the bike geeks I've met out West.

Sometimes you have a period in your life where things feel a bit off. The light in the woods during magic hour doesn't make you teary any more. 40mph through the s-turns- all you notice is that your left sti lever rattles and that when you were in college you got to that descent 40 minites quicker with more watts per kilogram than some badass local pros. You don't ride your mtb because it hasn't stayed built up for more than a fortnight since 2006, and when it is built, your x9 deraileur doesn't stay in gear. Your DH bike sits in a corner. The ****ing thing falls apart every single time you ride it. Dampers become dampeners. Brakes brake.

I've been one of those people for more than half a decade now, I think. For the last month I've been stuck with just a bmx bike, trying to figure out how to ride it like a Bicycle Motocross bike, as it was intended by God, and Brian Wilson and Stacy Peralta, Thrasher magazine and Roger DeCoster. In the ****ing dirt. In sand pits. In abandoned factories. In back yards, parking lots and hidden trails built by thousands of hours of graft and toil by 14 year olds and 35 year olds working together to keep the scene going. Passive Aggressive in the real sense. Freesurfing God's race track self-destructively fast. Abraded, broke(n) and totally stoked.

Jon,
very cool...

I can sympathize with feeling older, slower, and broken and occasionally feeling like wtf am I doing here, feeling off. Then spring comes.

He's so right abou the trails in MA and in general New England. I've been lucky to trailride all over from Maryland to Ontario and Quebec. The best trails are in MA, CT and Maine.

yea for a while I was guilty of being too obsessed with my bike, spending more time working on my bike than riding it. For a while riding almost felt like a chore.

Guy has a hell of an attitude, but I hear what he's saying.

I miss bike riding for when it was bike riding...I used to ride my MTB all over the place, and was just happy to get out and get on the trails. I really miss my old stomping grounds...somewhere along the line it became about who has the best gear or what I could do if only I had disk brakes or whatever....I'd love to get back to where it was just rad to get out on some trails. The regular trails around here blow though...nothing compared to back home in CNY.

If u ride long enough then you will no doubt relate to that post.
We can all get in a rut from time to time (pun intended) but to keep things fresh i like to ride with newbies sometimes as their pure zeal kinda rubs off me and they are not tainted yet by being a snobby parts whore.
Just riding for riding and stoked on it.
Thanks for the reminder KrankyJohn

I was listening to this
while i was writing it this morning. Shredding with your buddies in the scene we've all made together is so awesome.

Yeah, I may have just gone to my last hardcore show, to see Starkweather in Albany. At 37, seemed a little odd. Then talking to Vin and Harry, bassist and drummer for them, they are in their 40's so, didn't feel so bad.

Talked about the scene in the 80's and 90's, shows in little bars in Troy and Schenectady, bands like Shudder to Think, Integrity, Rest in Pieces and GB.

Nice to reminisce sometimes. I'm still waiting to have any interest in listening to U2 and 50cent. Too angry still, I guess.

HEY GRUMPS! Thanks for the "call back" to ride and be a kid again this weekend...

Deeper and Darker.

Thanksgiving II

I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for cycling. Not that I wouldn’t be part of BKW, or that I wouldn’t be writing about cycling in general, but I don’t think I’d still be on this spinning rock, were it not for cycling.

Each soul has a dark night, or two. Generally, we find our way through. We talk to friends, family, maybe a shrink, make jokes about the course of Prozac, but soon enough a day dawns and we realize that life ain’t so bad. At least, that’s how it works most of the time.

Not too many years ago I experienced what they call in the parlance some “setbacks.” Relationship, career, finances, there wasn’t a break to be had. I celebrated a birthday moonlighting as a limo driver. And while I stayed on the bike, I didn’t have the will or energy to do hard miles, which is to say, I couldn’t express myself; there were no statements to be made.

There came a point when I began to believe that I was taking more than I deserved, giving less than I believed I should. And in the only way I could do the math, I began to think the world would have an easier time without the burden. As much as I knew my solution would hurt others, I began to think it was the lesser of two evils.

But I kept pedaling. Even when there seemed nothing to be gained, I kept going. I began riding more miles just to keep myself from brooding. I rode through sunrises and sunsets. I lost weight, and even though I didn’t feel like attacking the hills, I was suffering less.

The simple act of turning the pedals and moving through the world around me kept me rooted to it, ironic as that sounds. Seeing the wonder of the landscape, the changing vistas, the fun of descents, the inexorable reminder of my fragility as I climbed worked better than sunlight itself.

I don’t know when I turned the corner. I just recall that with each successive ride through that winter one thought kept returning: I’m glad I’m here; I wouldn’t want to miss this. And that was the key; selfishly, I knew I wasn’t finished yet.

Since then, of course, everything has changed. Family, friends, career, it all runs as well as freshly installed Dura-Ace. I’m not going to try to wrestle with the mystery of our existence, why we’re here or what we’re meant to do with it. The answer is different for each of us. What I continue to marvel at is the way a simple device meant for transportation has allowed us to discover so much more, not in going or even arriving, but in the doing. The doing is enough for which to be grateful

It's not too late to make our own scene from the one that's gone.
Oh right, we have one. It's Plattekill. This is why we need to get more groms, asap there. They aren't just the future, they're the past and the present.
[/YOUTUBE
Hardcore is dying. It doesn't have too if we can save whatever tiny sliver of the old scene that still exists.

I still say Slayer should play during the ProGRT race on the top of Platty. They may be homophobic dicks, but you always have to cut dudes who shred that hard some slack.

I was worried about keeping my dh bike all greased, adjusted, cleaned and basically dialed for a while. Then it got jacked. So I had something to ride, I built a bike out of spare beater parts in my shed... and then threw some gold rims on it for good measure. It was so awesome just to beat the crap out of it and put it back dirty, un-lubed and slightly out of whack then go ride it again that I decided that's how I was going to roll from now on.

I got a new bike, and put some $$ into it. By some people's comments when they see it at races and stuff, it could be blingin, but it hasn't been clean since the first week I bought it, still rides decent and it's the greatest feeling in the world just to throw it in the back of my truck and go ride somewhere. If I were not so lazy, I'd probably single speed the damn thing.

I think harcore will come back when all the little F-ers stop trying to be tough by shaving their whole bodies and listening to stuff that doesn't even relate to them. The kids need to get angry again.

Slayer would be great. Not sure we could get that booked tho.

Skrewdriver also rips, but do you see me asking for that to be blasting off the mtn tops of the Catskillz? :p

PS, I kid about SD, folks!

Skrewdriver...Nice...why not bring Rahowa back for a reunion? Then we can duplicate the baseball bat scene from Inglorious Basterds after they are done playing.
I call i get the first swing.
I know I'm not Jewish, but it would be nice to bring some come-uppance to those predjuced pricks.

Every trail bike and DH bike should be sold with a box of extra derailleur hangers. That would cut down on alot of the misery. And there should a storage slot ON THE BIKE for it. That way, every time the dang thing bends or gets broke off, you're golden.

Great post Mickey. You did a good job expressing the rut I found myself in a few years ago. Went out last season and just had a blast, didn't touch my bike, just rode for the fun of it and progressed far more than I thought was possible. I'd like to ride some of the trails out your way. Minus Jeepeater of course, already been there. Cue gratuitous Jeepeater pic!

Yep, great post! Small, simple bike has done wonders for me. Ride it, don't worry too much about the settings. Hell, the rear wheel is all janky, but still, it goes round. So it's all good. BMX tracks, Trails, Pump Tracks, DJs, improvised slalom. Rediscovering what I've missed for so long because, with the DH bike, you've got to throw it on the car, drive, ride, re-throw it on the car, drive back and contemplate how much damage you have done to it...

BMX is awesome because the bikes are small, they're tough and they're cheap to fix if they do break. You can just cruise about town, hit some jumps or you can rail berms all day. Going out on my BMX for a long period of time is pretty uncomfortable and in the long run not as funa s my road or mtn bike. But if i just need 15 minutes to get loose for a minute its amazing. Everyone should pick up a BMX for beating on when they feel a bit disillusioned with their big expensive bikes

This was my least favorite part about dh. Not to mention the associated costs. Been enjoying a single speed hardtail for the last 5 years and loving it.

I hear what that guy is saying, maybe we are a similar age as I sometimes have a similar out look on life in general or maybe we just get to become grumpy old groms because we got so many aches and pains from broken healed bones.

Bikes can be like relationships, some good ones and many bad ones!

that said there's a lot to be said for some trail karma I build trails DH and whatever to get my fix and also release my built up tension that guy obviously had, even rehabbing after 2.5 years of recovering spinal/head injuries and not riding I still did this and it kept and keeps me going, now I'm back on my DHR if only slightly I find I spend more time doing trail maintenance with my bike i ride after Ive done my bit for the trail I really for one enjoy this the peace being out in the forest with my best trail buddy my dog and others who come along and it keeps the riding in perspective and more fun regardless of the bike ya ride!

That said the bike that gave me these injuries my DJ Top I used for Dual slalom with a piss pot was one of the most fun bikes Ive had for its simplicity lack of bling and just ride ability for DH to street to riding around the farm and terrorizing local farmers on the back roads! That kept it real for sure!

Trail karma [trails don;t build or maintain themselves get involved and stop be yotch ing and wasting time and money on the latest crap before ya worn out last months lightest blingyest thing even pros could benefit from doing some yards which I'm sure many do anyways!

Keeping it real on the DIRT..that's my way anyhows :thumb:

Back in, back in the days when I'd wait to
see the old bands play. It didn't seem
like wasted days. I was so sincere, but
now I see more clearly. Music's only
work to them. It's not to me. So I say,
hats off to bands that change. Good
luck, go your own way. Why play for us,
if your heart's not in it? Cause what might
seem dumb to you is pounding in my
heart.

Great thread.

All of us want to drift back to the days when things were simple. I remember how tough life was when I was younger. What a joke! Now I have way more responsibility and sometimes the only thing that really gets me stoked on riding is building that new bike...

What happened?!?

Duno, I enjoy working on my bike or building trail almost as much as riding, to me enjoying mtb includes everything needed to make it happen, you need a trail, you need a bike, and then you can go ride.

Nothing quite like shredding trail you dreamed up on a bike you built :)

Agreed. I have the same weapon:

But I learned yesterday that while this will not bend, the XTR attached to it will. :(
Hanger on my Turner tore the threads off of an X9 derailleur on Sunday. Threads in the hanger were still fine though. Traditional style too, not even the Highline/DHR one.

One problem I have with this thread: It doesn't take into account my aging body. Example: I tried to ride again like a giddy school child yesterday, along other man-child'in Pterodactyl and Rag Doll on the lovely SMBA trail system. We rode fast down hill, we lolly gagged uphill. We stopped to watch Jon almost throw up, I yelled something about "Tampax" then ran square into a bunch of women trail walkers, etc. and so on. On the way out, Ptero/Jon tried to out-child me and attempted to push me off my bike on a downhill. I, of course, fell towards him thereby putting my foot INTO his front wheel, causing it to taco and hurting my already aging bad ankle in the process.

Ride like a child again? Yes.
Have the recuperative ability of an old man? Yes there too, unfortunately.
