You're going to love this topic... rules. But lotsa folks are asking me to post info about Duthie rules as decisions are made. It's good timing. Final decisions have been made and King County just sent a batch of signs to the printer on Tuesday. So here goes...

WHO & WHAT IS ALLOWED ON THE TRAILS?

XC Trails:
  • 1-way bike trails – all clockwise
  • hikers allowed but bikes have right-of-way (step aside when hear a bike coming)
  • dogs allowed on leash
  • no horses, motos or other users

FR Trails:
  • 1-way bike trails – all downhill
  • Bikes only – no hikers, no dogs at all, etc.
  • Every FR trail except Ryan's will have a walk-up trail (for photos, checking out features, watching riders, etc)

WTA Trail (access trail from the north parking lot to the clearing):
  • Multi-Use = hikers, bikers, horses and dogs on-leash.
  • Hikers & horses have right-of-way over bikes.
  • On the boardwalk, bikers should dismount for hikers.
  • Horses aren't allowed on the boardwalk.
  • Summer / dry season equestrian path next to the boardwalk may be brushed in this summer.

Future Multi-Use Trail (from the clearing to the Gd Ridge trail):
  • To be completed in Phase 2 (tentative)
  • Multi-Use = hikers, bikers, horses and dogs on-leash.
  • Hikers & horses have right-of-way over bikes.

Lots of arguments behind the above. King County's risk management team and lead council weighed in... and even mandated some of the above.

Now a few more I'd like to highlight...

PACK OUT YOUR TRASH.

Most King County trails & trail systems don't have garbage cans or porta potties. Except for the porta potty at the Lodge (north parking lot), that's the way it's going to be at Duthie until we can work something out. So until then, please pack out your trash. If you (or your dog) have to #2-it in the woods, please pack it out!

DO NOT BYPASS GATEWAY FEATURES

More gateway features and fences are going to go up over the next month -- they are for your safety. Please respect them and don't make your own path through the woods to go around them.

UNAUTHORIZED TRAIL MODIFICATIONS OR BUILDING OF JUMP/FEATURES IS PROHIBITED. PLEASE DO NOT MAKE ALTERATIONS TO THE PARK OR TRAIL FEATURES.

Fortunately, almost everyone fully agrees with this. Just keep your eyes peeled. Don't hesitate to ask someone you see building: "do you have permission to do that? who is the lead builder/volunteer you are working with?"

RIDE DON’T SLIDE. SKIDDING DAMAGES JUMPS AND TRAILS.

I'm actually pretty surprised by how many riders I see skidding on purpose all over the place. It's just a matter of communication and education. Please help spread the word. Skidding really does create a lot of extra work for the builders/volunteers.

STAY WITHIN PARK BOUNDARIES. KEEP OFF PRIVATE PROPERTY.

Very important! Please stay on the trail. There are only 2 entrances/exit to the park:
1) North side parking lot off of Duthie Hill Rd
2) South side maintenance access rd off of Issaquah-Fall City Rd
If you try to get in/out any other way you'll be trespassing on private property.

PARKING

Park at the North entrance lot (Duthie Hill Lodge). Overflow parking on weekends is at Endeavor or Cascade Ridge elementary schools. More info on the trail page regarding parking: http://evergreenmtb.org/duthie. PLEASE DON'T PARK AT THE LDS CHURCH OR ON ANY PRIVATE PROPERTY. The church is going to let us use their parking lot and will unlock the gate for major events. That is awesome! The 2 events this year are the May 22 Grand Opening and the June 19 XC Race. Please don't park there any other time.

Some obvious ones that we have to put on the signs:

RIDE RESPONSIBLY. STAY IN CONTROL.
ONLY RIDE FEATURES THAT MATCH YOUR ABILITY.
RIDE ONLY ON DESIGNATED TRAILS.
BE CONSIDERATE OF NEIGHBORS AND OTHER PARK USERS, ESPECIALLY CHILDREN.

What about fixing trails or damage.
If it's not a serious hazard (just wear and tear), please contact me or Kevin (mwestra@ or kevin@ evergreenmtb.org). Or, if you know the builder/lead volunteer, feel free to contact them. Or post here with the title "Trail Damage at Duthie"... we'll hear about it pretty fast.

If it's a serious hazard and you can easily make it safe (example: removing a branch or rock that has fallen in the trail), by all means make it safe if you can.

If it's dangerous and you can't repair it (example: large blowdown in a landing zone, or a structure is failing), then do what you can to close that trail or feature down with branches or whatever... and then contact one of us. Our cell phone #s are posted on every Evergreen Duthie work party at: http://evergreenmtb.org/recreation/calendar_view.php.

If you don't know whether it's a serious hazard or not, then don't do anything. Just contact one of us (me, Kevin, one of the builders/lead volunteers) and post here.

Any questions... contact one of us. Thanks!
