poor guy broke a bone in his arm during the Gravity East race this weekend, so he'll be out for a little while I assume. unfortunate for the dude as I'm sure Trek was hoping for big things out of him this year. hopefully he can return strong and destroy any and all races he gets to for the rest of the year!
healing vibes to Neko!

Man he was just getting warmed up to the big guns class too. Hopefully he'll be back and 100% for world champs!

are you all doctors or did you just stay at a holiday inn express last night?
6 weeks is what the doctor told him, they couldn't set the bone or put a cast on it but he should be back on the bike in 6 weeks, hopefully, he was killing it this weekend.

Nothing makes a guy, especially a guy like Neko, hungrier than sitting on the sidelines during the season. It will be interesting to watch him in a few months. I'm sure he can still ride a road bike and train like an animal with a broken wrist bone. Windham and Quebec will be very good indeed!

FWIW: It is super common to not cast a break right away. Too much swelling. If you cast it right away, when the swelling goes down the cast is all of a sudden useless.

Also depends on the bone that broke. Some are positioned that a cast won't do much anyway. Collarbones are like that. For a wrist bone, I'm sure there is going to be some kind of cast put on to immobilize the area for a while.

What he said, they made me wait when I broke my schaphoid. Hopefully he didn't break that! I was stoked for a young did killing it at otter, he was pinning it as hard as the big guns, amped to see him on the WC circuit.

Healing vibes!

(plus, I'm a sucker for americans doing well at DH! GO GWWWWWINNNN! and heal up Mulally!)

Thanks for the info, Jason.

Just curious: Anyone know where on the course this happened? I saw him getting carted off on an ATV on Saturday morning, but I didn't know if it happened on the upper rock section or some random place farther down.

It happened at the off camber rooty section, between the fire road and the last rock garden. He got bucked and went over the bars at the top of the hill/beginning of the roots and landed, pretty much on his head/arm in the bottom. One of the hardest crashes I’ve witnessed, fer sure.

Bummer. That high line over the roots is one of those where I always say, "You're not going to win the race right there, but you sure as hell could lose it."

Trek World Racing had this to say; it answers some questions in the thread:

Following an accident in training at last weekend's first round of the Gravity East DH Series at Massanutten (USA), Neko Mulally has a confirmed compound fracture of his arm, 3/4 down the Radius bone toward the wrist.

After waiting for the swelling to go down, Neko visited an orthopedic specialist in Philadelphia yesterday who regularly deals with sporting injuries, and the latest information is serious but not as bad as it could have been.

While the bone has a compound fracture, it is not displaced very much at all, approximately 10% off-set. The medical team did not need to set it, they just put his arm in a cast (past the elbow joint) and they feel it will heal fine on its own.

Neko will be checking back with the specialist each week to make sure everything is progressing well. The current cast will be removed in 2-3 weeks and a smaller one placed on his forearm, and that will be there for a further 1-2 weeks. The doctors feel Neko will be cast-free in 4-5 weeks and start riding with a brace, then at 6 weeks he may be able to compete.

For now the team is scrapping any plans of Neko racing in Maribor or Fort William, and will take a week by week assessment on having Neko ready to race for Leogang. Ultimately the team is not wishing to rush his recovery or return to racing.

Neko said: "Obviously this is a huge blow for me, as I was so looking forward to the start of the World Cup season. Right now Leogang is looking realistic to come back to racing, but we'll take it one week at a time for now. Of the possible ways it could have broken, this is a very good scenario. It is unlikely that only one bone in the forearm breaks. It's very good because the other bone, the Ulna, is 100% fine and will hold the broken one in place as it heals. I think that I landed with my arm underneath my body on a rock or root that broke only that one bone. I'm just concentrating on recovering as best as I can". Team Owner Martin Whiteley says: "I got the call just as we were going on air for the Freecaster 4X coverage at Houffalize, and of course we were all very upset for Neko. But it's not the end of the world, and he needs to stay focused on recovery, doing all he can with his coach and doctors to return 100% fit and strong at the appropriate time. Neko's a smart and responsible rider; I have 100% faith in his ability to manage this injury."
