Hey guys,

I just picked up a 28t granny caus' I found I almost never used my 22t... but now it's not playing nice with a 32t middle ring. I think 28t is too close to 32t, and the ramps and pins aren't in the right place. I'm thinking of getting a 36t middle ring (I run a bashring instead of an outer ring) to use with the 28t. I could also get a 34t, but I think that might still be too close to 28 also.

Anyone have any thoughts re 34t v 36t combined with a 28t granny?

fwiw, I run an 11-34 cassette...

(yeah, I know this is the DH forum, but I think most people are on this forum...)

why not set it up as a double with a 28/36?
that's what I'm thinking, but I want to know if there's going to be issues with that. I was wondering if 28/34 would be better (or not as good).

I guess my post wasn't clear... sorry.

so for the sake of clarity:

given that 28/32 doesn't work because ramps and pins are all messed up, should I go:

28/34?
or
28/36?

which is best and why?

I run 28/38 on one bike, and a single 36 on the other. Both w/ 11-34.

Blackspire sells the 28/38 rings as a matched set. Unless you get a big ring that is made for a 28, shifting probably won't be great.

I would go w/ the 36 big ring, you would be lacking w/ 34.

I think 28/36 with an 11-34 is the magical # for a double set up. Like Wood Booger said, there are a couple companies now that sell chain rings specifically designed to be used together for a double setup.

another vote for 28/36, with 34 "big ring" youre a lot more likely to be spinning out,

Atm i run a 36 single ring, and would definitely prefer some additional climbing ability so would be looking at 28/36 combo

Thanks for the replys guys. I'm happy to report the setup worked awesome last night. Impeccable shifting up and down (better than my previous 22/32) and a good range for climbing and descending. I'm shifting more now, to get that "just right" feeling, but I think that's a good thing caus' it lets me keep my momentum up. Plus, the 28 "granny" definitely doesn't allow you to slack off on those steep climbs. I'm super happy with it.

For the record the 28t granny is a steel, unramped Envy ring, and the 36t is a machined-ramped RaceFace in 7075.

Now I just need a new bash-ring that covers the 36t ring. Any ideas on a lightweight bashring? I currently have a Straightline ring that covers up to 34t...
