I'm in a wedding in Bethel, ME around the 4th of July. I'm taking it upon myself to turn this into an opportunity to see new places and ride new terrain. So I'm flying into Buffalo and taking two weeks to drive out to Maine. I have never been farther east than Chicago so it will all be new territory. Going to ship my bike out to family in Buffalo and bring it along.

Anyone got any singletrack gems they want to share with a total stranger? I've looked up Whiteface and think I'll spend a day riding there. I've heard of Acadia and been told to check out Kingdom Trails. Beyond that I am clueless.

My fiance is worried about camping alone. She thinks that back east means people everywhere and campers get mugged regularly. What is she talking about?

I'll also be working- think Tommy Boy selling hops instead of brake pads.

Thanks for any input!:thumb:

I'll be brief because I'm sure you will get plenty of other responses.

Acadia is amazing but has zero mtn biking. But the 45 mile carriage road network (crushed stone, no cars) and the 18.5 mile loop road with a Caddillac summit road (all newly paved, 13.5 mi one way) couldn't be better for cruising along and enjoying the scenery. Check out the Google street views if you don't believe me. The hiking is great too. I just got back from a long weekend there.

For northern New England xc I'd say KT, Stowe, Millstone Trails, and North Conway. For resorts there are plenty. Check out this map.

If you want some more venture south where MA, NH, RI, and CT offer endless possiblities. Check out my map link below. Also check out NEMBA for rides, info, etc. Down here I'd recommend Vietnam, FOMBA, Earls, Lynn, Otis, Trail of Tears.... oh gosh there are so many. Pretty much anywhere you go there are plenty of ride options.

As far as camping its pretty much like car camping anywhere else. Some will try and pack you into a field but most are spread out in thick woods. I've never heard of anyone getting mugged and I always leave all my stuff behind during the day while I'm out. She has nothing to worry about. People around here are friendly.

Good luck!

Let me know as you get closer. I am originally from Buffalo, so I may be able to help with directions, camping +.
Tons of camping up here in Lake Placid. Over 200 camp sites within 2 miles of Whiteface alone! Not much crime up here as most people do not even lock there car or house doors.
What kind of riding you looking for. The Lake Placid/Wilmington region has wondeful dh, lots of new x-c and now the dirt jump park.
Our web site has many pictures and lodging choices that should help you make your decision.

Hey I should have prefaced this by saying that I'll be in Upstate NY for 5 days or so and then spend a weekend up near Whiteface. The next week will be cruising through NH, VT, and Maine. It looks like I'm going to dip down into Erie, PA and also down into western Mass at some point.

All the states are so little! I am afraid that traveling by car is going to be a pain. Lots of towns to drive through and slow speed limits maybe. I don't know.

Acadia sounds cool, but not my style of riding unless I have been indulging in herbal tea and need to relax. I like to ride trails that make me hurt on the way up and then forget the hurt on the way down. Pretty much whatever. I'm leaving the dirt jump bike at home and bringing the squishy 5.5" mtn bike. I wish that I could bring both though. The pumptrack/trails at Whiteface looked real nice on that website.

I think my friend wants to ride that bike park in Bethel as a last minute bachelor party. Should be fun!

Go to this place: http://highlandmountain.com/ It's the best the east coast has to offer. The DH is real nice, the jump park(s) are rad(bring a HT), they have micro beers and wraps in the lodge, so on and so forth. And you dont have to wear seat belts either. The whole NH experience is great. Rye airfield is also worth checking out if your on the coast.

If I didnt have diablo so close i'd spenjd much more time in NH.

I'll second what woodsguy said. There's almost too much good riding around here to try and pick from. You almost can't go wrong. The terrain will probably be a bit of a shock to you though, even our nicely maintained trails are full of roots and rocks, it's just part of the terrain here. If you get down to the central MA area drop a line, I'd be happy to give you some more detailed suggestions.

Do you have a list of the actual towns/cities you'll be in? It would be easier to recommend places to ride.....

Western Mass. - make sure to hit Yokun Ridge.

cool. I have been riding desert singletrack for the last 3 months or so. Sagebrush, sand, and babyheads. Time for a change of terrain. How muddy will the riding be? Should I expect it on all rides or not? If so, my bike might need some pre-trip loving.

Usually on trips I try to stop in national parks and see crazy places. I have worked in archeology and also in the agriculture industry. I am going to try and hook up with some farms and see if I can't get my food locally as I travel. I'd like to see some historical sites of the Revolutionary War also. It should be a fun trip

I am working on the actual path of the trip right now. I'll be passing through all of these towns at some point; Albany, Ithaca, Buffalo, Erie, Springfield, Plattsburgh, Rochester, Portland, Bethel, etc...

I have 14 days to drive from Buffalo to Bethel and I'll go where the trails and breweries are.

I'm thinking about driving from Erie down to the Blue Canoe Brew Co and then back up to NY through Bradford. Anyone been through these places? So far the people I've talked to haven't really mentioned trails much. Is Blue Canoe a good spot?

You will experience the polar opposite of desert riding. It will be mostly, if not all - hardwood forests with plenty of rocks and roots. No real long west-coast type climbing, but lots of short, sometimes steep hills across rolling terrain.

Chances are you won't see a lot of mud during your trip, unless you have the bad luck of visiting during an unusually bad rainy period. Depending on the location, it may be dusty and very dry on the trails.

Coming from the west (NY) hit Highland in NH, then Attitash in NH, then cross into Maine on 302 and hit Sunday River. Can't think of a better trio of lift served riding. I'm pretty sure I'll be at S.R. over the 4th look for an old man and a young kid on Norcos..

Unc... Ill definitely be up at Sunday River over the 4th also. I'll be on the baby blue transition covert.

Cecil, I wish I had time in all the places I visit to camp and ride. Rochester is one of the spots I'll be cruising through quick and just working. Ithaca on the other hand I am probably going to camp near. Some locals on mtbr have come out of the woodwork to show me around shindagin, plus ellicotville if I have time on my way to Ithaca. Everyone I talk to is Platty this Platty that... So I am thinking that a Plattekill day might be in order.

The first nights gong to be in NW PA and the second night somewhere near Ithaca, third night should be near Albany? Its all really loosely planned and open ended. Just like it should be. :)

my bike is already in the mail. 60 bucks to ship UPS from WA to NY. not bad
