First they pass the border law and now they want to spend $1.25 million on bridges for squirrels.

Arizona is spending $1.25 million to build bridges for endangered squirrels over a mountain road so they don't become roadkill and then monitor their health.

The money is being spent, officials said, because cars kill about five of these squirrels each year.

While most suburbanites may be baffled why anyone would protect a pesky squirrel, these are Mount Graham red squirrels, a breed once thought to be extinct. Only 250 of them are known to live near the top of Mount Graham.

The Federal Highway Administration grant will be used to build rope bridges over the lone road through the squirrels' habitat, according to Arizona Department of Transportation Community Relations Director Timothy Tait. The DOT plans to install 41 of the "canopy tunnel crossings" at a cost of $400,000.

Another $160,000 will be spent on cameras to monitor the bridges, and the rest of the money will fund a project to monitor the rodents.

That works out to about $5,000 per squirrel.

i bet the squirrels will have to show their "officially endangered" papers to use the bridges...don't want no regular squirrels mooching off of the red ones.

How much would you spend per California Condor? The Giant Panda? How much would you spend to bring back the passenger pidgeon, the dodo, haast's eagle, the thylacine?

This is a species on the verge of extinction and $1.25M is pocket change in the grand scheme of things. Take your outrage elsewhere.

edit: looking at the numbers above, they are spending $10,000 per bridge. That seems pretty economical to me.

Squirrel bridges will be the least of their worries. They will spend billions in court over lawsuits against their immigration law and especially this, if it passes:

State Sen. Russell Pearce says that he is intent on introducing legislation that would deny birth certificates to "anchor babies," the children of illegal immigrants born in the U.S.

There is clear concern that this kind of legislation is a violation of the 14th Amendment, which grants citizenship to persons born in the U.S.

Squirrels or trampling all over Constitution...yep, they're nuttier than squirrel sh!t.

Protecting endangered species is one thing, but doesn't spending $1.25 million on rope bridges seem a bit off ?
No.

There are 250 of them left. Genetic bottlenecking is likely already an issue, and the loss of just a few individuals in such a small population decreases genetic heterogeneity that much more. How much is the continued existence of a species worth to you?

What more proof of the existence of evil do you need than squirrels ? No other animal can move in stop motion. This is empirical, irrefutable, scientific evidence and the passing of this law is unconstitutional. These tree rats want to abscond with the hard earned tax dollars of the fine citizens of Arizona. I bet Obama is behind this. Bush would have let Cheney shoot them all.

Just admit it, all you guys are squirrel lovers. Satan worshiping tree huggers be damned!

Considering how much money AZ has poured into social services for illegals over the years, a few million to save an endangered species is definitely a drop in the bucket.

Hopefully, if the illegals choose to enter the US and take advantage of our overly-generous social entitlements elsewhere (CA), AZ will save enough that they can allocate more money for saving other endangered species, more law enforcement and protection for parks and other public areas, etc. Those are the first budgets that get cut when a state is going broke, and it's a damn shame. The US shouldn't have to let it's natural resources go to hell just so we can support lawbreakers from another country, especially a country that has no respect for us and thinks we're a bunch of suckers begging to be taken advantage of.

Lol, now illegals are responsible for near extinction of red squirells??? I bet they have something to do with that oil leak also.

BTW how much do you think blowing up brown people cost us and what are the environmental/society consequences?

article said:
"We could have used this money to improve roads for our citizens," Herrington said. "There are 600 miles of bad roads in Graham County that need to be improved for the people that live here."

The people of Graham County will have to wait for better roads. For now, it's the squirrels' turn.
What a fvcktard, how many miles of highway can you rebuild with 1,2 million$? It's basically a very very tiny amount for preserving diversity.

I thought this thread was going to address the current lawlessness of an area the size of Connecticut, with an open declaration by authorities that it can no longer protect America's border from illegal aliens, drug smugglers, paramilitary groups etc.

For ****'s sake, who cares about squirrels!

I kind have a feeling that the people who dreamed this up are not the ones wanting to kick out illegals.

Just saying.

And this is a lot less expense than per individual spending on California condors, by a long shot.

Lets just say I don't have a lot of faith in humanity.
Then you would probably like this book you sicko; :disgust1:

It's people like yourself who have this delusion that you aren't included in the intended general population that the authors of Ecoscience discuss. It's a good thing that Holdren is Obama's science czar.
I'm guessing that you believe the Earth is suffering from overpopulation as well as anthropogenic global warming.

Thanks for proving my point.

I love how that image came from "infowars.com" and a quick trip over to Amazon.com, since I had never heard of this book, reveals awesome little reviewer gems like
This would all be overseen by a transnational and centralized "planetary regime" that would utilize a "global police force" to enforce the measures outlined above. The "planetary regime" would also have the power to determine population levels for every country in the world.
* A transnational "Planetary Regime" should assume control of the global economy and also dictate the most intimate details of Americans' lives -- using an armed international police force.
and the one that really made me LOL

This is from a World Net Daily article written by Jerome S. Corsi ..."Some people - respected legislators, judges, and lawyers included - have viewed the right to have children as a fundamental and inalienable right," the authors continued on page 838. "Yet neither the Declaration of Independence nor the Constitution mentions a right to reproduce." ...The article goes on. You all get the point. Don't take my word for it, research yourself!!
This stuff is real and they (the Globalists) DO WANT YOU DEAD!
Dude, seriously, put down the bong, turn off Coast to Coast, get away from the internet for a couple days, go ride your bike. You need to get out. SRSLY.

You just wish you weren't a domesticated yuppie who hates America.

Forget the squirrels. Police in Arizona are outmanned, so they are begging for more troops to help protect the border and parts of Arizona from Mexican drug cartels.

He's just mad and disenfranchised because Canada hasn't been granted statehood yet. Kind of like Puerto Rico.
