I'm hoping you aren't going to use a full faced helmet for xc.

661 helmets are usually good deals. Same with Giro and Bell. Actually, I got the kids some Bell helmets not too long ago. They were way good deals.

You said occasional DH so reading between the lines it sounds like you will be keeping your current helmet for XC and want a cheap Fullface to supplement it for when you do DH riding on occasion or when you otherwise think you should wear it.

As above I think 661 is probably worth looking into, it seems to be a pretty popular option regardless of budget.
I had a short foray into DH riding and what I ended up buying was a Fox Rampage, pretty decent for the price, definitely pretty hot to wear in the summer time or if you happen to be trying to pedal back up the hills! Hence a fullface isn't really recommended for XC, there are some good crossover type helmets that offer more protection than XC lids but not quite as hot and full on as a DH Fullface.
I was lucky enough to pick up my Rampage for half price at the time though so it was a real bargain at $100Au

I've been using a Bell Bellistic. Got two years ago for around $75. It's a great deal. Comfy. but warm. and it actually works!!:sarcastic:

but 661 makes a good inexpensive one or two also!

best bet is to look local to see who has one you can TRY on. They all fit kinda diffrerent!

the speshy helmet, deviant? or something? has lots of vents and feels more like an XC helmet formed into a full face, its pretty light but it is more money though!

one thing to look for is the chin guard vent, make sure its big and allows for good breathing!

Yes sorry for the late reply, there was I think the Met Parachute that has the chin guard (don't know how good this is).
One I know of is the Giro Xen which is a relatively popular AM helmet, well it was a few years ago and I'm sure still is. And I think like someone mentioned the Specialized Deviant Basically XC lids which have more back of the head protection.
I did also see in Dirt UK mtb mag full face type lids with an open face...only if they had a few more vents otherwise you might as well just get a full face?

Here is a link to the Xen

If you really think you're prone to face plants but don't want to go full DH lid..

But you know in the end it really depends on you, if you think you will wear it more often then not perhaps you should just go for a DH lid. If you're just after something a bit more than XC then there are options out there, even check out the Dirt Jump lits (Protec Ace Classic for example) it's always good to consider all angles and be sure you're making an informed decision.

LOL here's another, the 661 Recon looks kind of like they've taken a DJ lid put a visor and some vents in...
