Duthie's first XC Race is on Saturday June 19, so ALL of the XC trails and almost ALL of the freeride trails will be closed. Ryan's Line and Big Tree will be closed for sure. We may be able to leave the Flowpark (Semper Dirticus, Paramount/DWBz, 2Hi/Jabulani, Luna Air Zone) and HLC line open. I'll find out and follow up here.

Sign up for the race: http://evergreenmtb.org/recreation/calendar.php?event_id=8390

Was there a more specific thread for this event? since I couldn't find one I will vent here...

I was rather disappointed in the spectator accommodations for this race, I traveled 10 mi on bike and 45 min on the bus just to watch, and when I get there, I find I can only watch from the clearing? what fun is that? I can see the tape where the course is, I know to stay off of there. This was my first bike race, but I have been attending races of all types for years (auto, go kart, rc car, boat, plane, all sorts) I know how to spectate. Maybe XC races are different, but I've watched plenty of videos from mainstream events, and there seems to at least be press access all through out the course maybe fans, but no regular spectators at a local race? what a rip... oh well, at least I know how to get to the park now, I will take it out on the trails later  :thumb:

Good input. I'll forward it on to all the organizers.

I don't know if it's "normal" to let spectators spectate from anywhere on the course, but I would have liked to watch the fast Bootcamp DH section. This was my first time at an XC MTB race, too. I was surprised by the low spectator turn-out (even though we had 200 racers). I was told that's just normal for XC racing... they just don't get a lot of spectators. There's another thread going here: http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=628920.

Any other XC race spectators or racers out there? Let us know what you think.

Where's this so called DH section of bootcamp? With downhill racing spectators are allowed anywhere on the hill to view as long as they are not on the course. When they did the XC races at South Seatac I believe you could also watch from anywhere.

I'm new to xc racing and have been to only a few. There hasn't been very many spectators. The start times are so spread out between classes so the racers show up only for their warm up and race it seems like. That left basically no one in the clearing to cheer. Most people there didn't even seem to pay much attention as racers went by. (I guess it is kind of boring) I think it would have been pretty cool to open some viewing areas out on the course. The Bootcamp area would be fun to watch as mentioned before.

Dirtmover, the "DH" section is just the bermy section from the "World's Longest Log Ride" on down to the road crossing. Not, "DH" to many but more flowy and generally down and some riders ride up the access road just to session that part. Anotherwords, very basic beginner "DH".

As for spectating, XC has never been a "spectator sport". Yeah, it would be nice to see some more exciting sections in the woods but as mentioned, most riders don't really care about what it going on in other classes and if they are not on the podium, many will just leave after their race. And, having been one at one point, I can say the XC racer geeks are not the most "social" of the mtb rider world. :weee:
