http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/08/02/chief-teens-drown-red-river-shreveport-la-crews-searching/

Fox News said:
Six teenagers from at least two families drowned in the Red River in northwest Louisiana after they stepped off a ledge from shallow water into a chasm about 20 feet deep on Monday, fire officials said. A 14-year-old was rescued.

Shreveport Assistant Fire Chief Fred Sanders said he believed the victims, ages 13 to 18, included three brothers in one family and a sister and two brothers in another.

"They were out here with some adults. But unfortunately, neither the children nor the adults could swim," he said.

Sanders said names may be released Tuesday, after the department is sure relatives have been notified.

The teens had started playing in a familiar area but ended up at a spot in the river where the bottom fell suddenly and that's where divers found the bodies, he said.

"I certainly hope I never see anything like this again in my career," Fire Chief Brian Crawford told WAFB-TV.

Sanders said he did not know whether one teen fell and pulled down others, or if they were trying to rescue each other.

It took more than three hours to find all the bodies, he said.

"It's devastating," Sanders said. "To my knowledge the city has never experienced an incident of this magnitude."

The Times of Shreveport reported that only one life jacket was available.

Rescue crews were delayed a bit because the accident was reported as near the Jimmie Davis Bridge but was almost a mile away, Sanders said.

The families were in recreational area of the Red River that has sand bars, Sanders said. The park is a popular picnic and fishing area and some people do go wading.

I never understood how you wouldn't know how to swim. I got thrown in Tahoe in my earliest memories having to swim, dad was a fan of sink or swim.

SHREVEPORT, La. -- DeKendrix Warner

Blah blah blah...

"Adults seem to pass their fear of water onto their children," she said. "There seems to be a culture that says, 'Its a scary environment don't go there."'

Not always, apparently.

One of my old buddies is black. His brother and one of his nephews have drowned. You won't catch that dude in the water more than knee deep. Kind of weird.

All incoming freshman had to take a swimming test at the university I attended. I was absolutely amazed at the number of people who could not swim 3 laps in an olympic pool. If you failed the test a swimming class was added to your schedule.

reminds me of the tosh.0 sketch...

I think it should be mandatory in school to have regular swimming tests. Once every four years. Water is everywhere and you never know when you might be surrounded by it...like, I don't know, on a boat. You can't fix stupid, but if you make it a requirement to know how to swim early on in life, you can prevent this...

Some of those answers are awesomely entertaining:thumb:
this one was my favorite:rofl:

my brothers are great swimers.
i don't swim for many reasons.
1--i don't want to swim at the beach because ppl tinkle at the beach, and 25% of the salt in the water comes from whale sperm...i'm not wanting to drink tinkle-water or whale sperm
2--at a pool...i would swim in a room by myself, but if others were in the pool then no. that is like someone taking a bath, in a tub, and then me dipping my face in the water and coming out with a mouth full...

i don't swim for sanitary reasons ;)

Backwoods (white) southerners will tell you black folk can't swim because "their skin is too heavy" For serious. They also say black people can run faster because "they have an extra bone in their leg" The words they, them and their come up a lot in southern race discussions.

The hayseeds get pissed when you laugh at them too. You can prove to them they are wrong and they will say "It don't matter, that's what I believe."

They good thing is, I feel like such a progressive, intelligent individual when exposed to these yokels.

my high school not only required basic swimming as a requirement for graduation, but also a life-saving course.
that's cool. I know cornell required a swim test to graduate, but I'm guessing none of these guys were candidates for the ivy league...

There was also a 30% failure rate IN THE NAVY for basic swimming qualifications when I went through boot camp.

Why would you join the Navy if you've never even tried to swim?
