The wife, wee-ones, and I are finally moving next year and I think the destination is North Carolina. We have been looking at areas and determined we want to be somewhere on the west side. Want the country living ideally within an hour from a larger city.
If any one has ideas for me as far as good schools for my girls (both elementary), and where a fence business might do well. Also have a skid loader and I know because fencing might be a seasonal thing folks may want snow clearing in the winter. Am I on the right track? Any help and info would greatly appreciated.
Thanks Josh

I like Hendersonville alot. I live down in the flats in Charlotte and there are lots of trails here but mostly of the flatter variety. Hendersonville has a cool small town atmosphere and is right by Asheville. Not sure about the school system though.

Hendersonville is a solid suggestion.
You'ed be 25 minutes from me and I am awesome and love to shuttle, and will even give you free access with your skid steer to build jumps on my land.
Just because I am kind like that. ;)

Ha, seriously, I like this whole area from Asheville down to the upstate of SC where I live. One thing to consider is cost of living. Its a good deal cheaper to own a house on the SC side of the NC/SC border than it is to live higher up. If that is not a concern to you though, go higher up because it is hot as lava here in the summer.
Also, if you move around here, be prepared to ride the hell out of your trail bike. That is the best way to get to the goods in Pisgah.

Oh, I see. The Valley isn't up to NC snuff? Maybe but we have so many opportunities for cheap living and endless adventures. While the trails aren't as developed as the Pisgah area, we do have Windrock. I just did a 70 mile trip from the house on my dual sport. I hit gravel, dirt and singletrack with 6000 ft of descending.

Plus the TTC is right down the road. Thats two legit DH shuttle spots right here. Plus we shuttle Windrock during the week after work. ;)

I just checked out Hendersonville online, houses, schools, businesses, etc..and it does look like a cool town. Cost of houses don't seem to bad either. Probably better prices w/ more acreage a little further out. The wife and I plan on making a road trip to check out areas and that will be on our list for sure. Thanks for the input.
How about Wilksboro, anybody know anything about that town?

Asheville sucks to be a working class mountain biker. Not enough hours in a day to ride it all. If you're a retired old yankee who likes gated roads and living here 3 weeks of the year, it's heaven.

I'm not moving up just for the riding,(That is what I tell my wife). I gotta get away from Ga. Its to friggin hot here in the summer for work and play. I believe heat index has been 105+ for 2 weeks straight. Unless you get off on mud boggin, fishing, or hog hunting there is nothing here. Its getting to be a drag to have to drive 4+ hours to do any kind of riding or snowboarding. Anyway, this my  thanks for listening.

Gosh. Pick any direction from Knoxville. Maryville, Oak Ridge, Lenoir City, Morristown, Jefferson City, Greeneville or even as far as Johnson City. I live in Clinton and like it a lot. I think we are a bit more redneck than around Asheville. Which offers cheaper living and no income tax to boot!

Wilkesboro is still pretty hot but does have some great XC that for the most part seems overlooked by the majority of the Charlotte riding community. Plus its a quick straight shot to this new trail system in Boone http://rockyknob.wordpress.com/

But its a ways from there to the rest of Pisgah.

Looked at those cities in Tn and Morristown seemed right up our alley. Gonna start traveling to some of these "chosen" cities soon to check them out.

Tell ya what. Come visit Louisiana for a week or two. Ride in 85% humidity at 111 deg heat index. The decision to live anywhere else will be easy. If it wasn't for the job + kids every other week I'd be somewhere with a mountain

Never implied I had it tougher than any other dude workin in this sh1t. I'm saying I'm done w/ it. I don't what u do for a livin but when I go to work outside all day and then come home and can't enjoy playing with kids cause its hotter than Satan nut sack, I know its time for me to relocate. I'm not asking for your pity just stating my situation and asking for suggestions. I know perry, ga isn't Louisiana but it has been that hot here.

If you move to Morristown your local closest xc trails are at Panther Creek State park. It's decent for xc bike trail ripping.
There is NO known place to mountainbike in Sevierville,Pigeon Forge,Gatlinburg or in the National Park.
But there is alot around the area.Norris Dam,IC King,Haw Ridge,Bigfoot,Windrock, etc.

Forgot what a pain the ass it is to move. From finding a place to renting ours, throwing stuff away that has only taken space, and the many round trips its all going to take to move our things. Looking forward to the change of scenery and our new life.

Yeah guys, I really like the area we're going. I have already looked at miles to various spots.
Do you have a trail bike?
I ended up gettin a Remedy a couple months back and only have a couple rides on it due to location and time. Lookin to put it to good use when I get there next week.
