We know a little about it.

We do not know "EXACTLY what my impact is".

That's not going to stop me from riding my bicycle or driving my car. It has stopped me from eating most seafood.
Ok, maybe I shouldn't use any absolutes, but I was just riding on a trail system that was built in the 1850's for gold mining.

I am familiar with the damage that the miners have done, especially when they started to use industrial strip mining techniques.

I have also seen the timeline of the recovery from the damage caused by mining.

Since visiting Downieville for the first time six years ago, I have helped to maintain these trails, and build several new ones.

I do trail work a mile from house and as far as 200 away. I like to think I know something about trail erosion and damage.

After reading all through this thread I'm still trying to figure out how a thread about the loss of 8 human lives has turned into a environmental debate...

If you don't agree with a sport or how people choose to recreate, keep it to your damn self. This is a free country and if I decide I wanna go "scar" some sand on my dirt bike while you are waxing your Prius and practicing being so self righteous, so be it.

Now for an update on the accident-

Fast-aid has raised over 100k since they set up the relief fund for the family's and the injured.

None of the injured haved lost there lives and many have been released from the hospital.

Multiple company's and organizations have stepped up to help in this time of tragedy.

Thank you to the few people here that have had something positive to say.

it sucks that 8 people died but.....a question......doesn't it piss you off just a little bit that those 8 people would not have died had they just exercised the tiniest bit of common sense?

Please, I never said anything about saving the planet for my own good. It takes generations and I'll be long gone. It's selfish to use the limited resources during your lifetime and screw over those that might come later.

Yes, we ARE parasites. But we can be less parasitic if we make some changes.

And spare us your argument that its ok to shred the landscape for fun because in the end "mother earth" will be better off without us. Even if it may be true on some macro, cosmic level, it's not the reason you fire up the buggy and you know it.
Sure, keep telling yourself the average Joe can make a change not racing a rally car while the US doesnt even want to sign the Kyoto protocol...
Ofcourse its doesnt do any harm to think about the environment and ride your bike to work, but the impact of the one or two people who give a **** about this planet isnt gonna change a thing but give them some peace of mind.

We might as well accept humans as a species are selfish assholes because a couple of hippies arent gonna change the faith or the race and our planet anyways.

Ok Im done now... :D

Man, your comments make me sick. It probably feels pretty good to just not care. You have given up, but it's nice because with that you will have no responsibilities and no guilt associated with your destructive actions.

took the red pill
It's really the problem of the NWO. See, they are introducing prozac and lithium into the water supply. Prozac is a fluorine based medication that basically inhibits the natural mechanism for survival and self-preservation mechanisms. This caused the folks to move closer and closer to the track, unfortunately causing their early demise. As for the driver? He's cowering in the corner of a dark and damp basement shivering in his undies.

G'day

It does actually, but since I've spent a lot of time at races and other events (New Years in Glamis pre national guard, etc.), I'm not really surprised by it.

In reality, yes, it's possible to die while watching or competing in these races. But with proper precautions (just like anything in life), you can be totally safe. Those who can't or don't want to comprehend that are at risk for anything they do, it just so happens these 8 people were desert racing spectators. May they rest in peace as they were probably great people, but what happened was avoidable.

I don't think that should mean the state should hold everyone hands and determine what's safe and what's not by shutting down this type of racing. It really should be up to us as individuals to figure out how to stay alive ourselves.

Truthfully that's how its always been. It does anger me that it took an incident like this to make people wake up and realize how dangerous this sport is. It does anger me that we brought the girl friends of our buddy's who were racing with us to the accident sight. So the answer to your question is yes, I am angry that something as simple as people moving 25ft back would have saved lives. I am angered by this whole incident.

We moved on from talking about rally cars specifically to a broader discussion about changing the way people live generally. And yeah maybe one or two people won't make an impact, but if you can get an increasingly large chunk of the people to take a few steps, it will make a difference. Call me a hippie, dreamer or optimist if you want, but it's better than just giving up.

According to a number of scientists a global disaster is allready inevitable and all the emission reduction in the world is only gonna postpone it for a minute period of time. When we found out about this in the 70s we were allready to late to solve this problem simply by reducing emissions.
Getting a large chunk of people people to reduce their emissions is a utopia, and even if it would happen and for some mysterious reason the industrial giants would stop poluting the earth tomorrow, it would not make much of a difference.

So go ahead and keep hiding from reality if that makes you feel better, hippie.
;)

Actually have a reverse osmosis filter under the sink. Didn't realize it also helped out my tinfoil hat tendencies...

reverse osmosis systems do though. and yes, the filters cost more than a complete unit. instead of buying new filters every 6-8 months, i buy a whole new setup from ebay.

Tinfoil hat types: please point me to peer-reviewed evidence stating why one shouldn't drink fluoridated water.

Do you realize that in addition to fluoridating water, why, there are studies underway to fluoridate salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk, ice cream? Ice cream, Mandrake? Children's ice cream!...You know when fluoridation began?...1946. 1946, Mandrake. How does that coincide with your post-war Commie conspiracy, huh? It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual, and certainly without any choice. That's the way your hard-core Commie works. I first became aware of it, Mandrake, during the physical act of love...Yes, a profound sense of fatigue, a feeling of emptiness followed. Luckily I-I was able to interpret these feelings correctly. Loss of essence. I can assure you it has not recurred, Mandrake. Women, er, women sense my power, and they seek the life essence. I do not avoid women, Mandrake...but I do deny them my essence.

Not to bring this thread back on track, but every time I watch footage of the Baja 1000, I'm amazed more people aren't killed.

I think it sucks, but anyone smart enough to find the viewing spots should be smart enough to stand back.

How about everybody shuts the FVCK up about the environment issue. EVERYONE is going to have a different opinion on it, why cant we just leave it at that?

Me personally, you'll find me doing things to better the enviroment yet I have a lot of fun also riding motorcycles in the desert, designated trails and tracks. Kind of funny that I like destructive things yet also enjoy nature by hiking, flying, scuba diving, rock climbing, nature photography...

But please, leave this whole issue alone. People have different opinions on things and no matter how much everyone argues with each other, things are not going to change and there will just be more anger between everyone.

If you drink poison in the desert, you will die. It's true. Of course, drinking poison most anywhere can kill you. If you're in the desert, you also die all hot and uncomfortable. Don't do it.
Scott: In the city always a refelection, in the woods always a sound.
Curtis: What about the desert?
Scott: You don't wanna go in the desert.
