Sevens Spring!!!! Heard a lot about it from someone that was there. That was one of the Mountain Cycle guys from FL that was holding the broken crank. Can't remeber his name. Big surfer down ther that was always at our South East races with his crew.

Ha! Never seen that clip... very cool. I was there the year before and watched some pretty cool DS action at the same spot.

ahhh....the old days of the NORBA Nats. I was there for that and at the time it was a BIG deal. 7Springs wasn't the best venue for DH but always a good mood and excitement with the approaching Mt Snow Nat.

I knew that it would bring back memories to the old school crew! Shaums rips pretty hard in that Thor Wixom movie, including dirt jumping with a full on boat achor Ellesworth DH bike.

I was glued to my VCR watching that movie and Fox's Bragging Rights when I was a youngster. No such thing as Clay Porters or Parkins back in the days!!!

Ha, I posted this a couple of months ago and all of us old guys were remenising (?) about the good old days.

Was that Farmer holding the crank? That's the only name that comes to mind. I used to race with those guys while I lived in FL.

Over your shoulder whispering
I was with Stik on it. He could have made it if he could have backed further up the hill but the crowd was packed in on him. I was above the tabletop thinking not enough speed. When he cased, we lost sight of him but his crank went sky high.

That week was epic.
Every bike was a re-badged M1.
Lopes ran around shirtless to the detriment of cool people everywhere.
EC had the only upside down White Bros fork.
Some ungodly gorgeous pro XC chic for Cannondale running around in white spandex
GT had the most massive trailer ever.
Palmer's bus & leather TLD jacket.
NBA Finals on in the lounge.
Every 4th bike was an orange Storm DH.
Jeff Steber himself personally tuning rigs out of a miniature pit.
Aaron Chase hopping the guardrail. Concrete luge.
The rumor that Lopes turned the rock garden into a highway the night before finals. Pinson riding a cellular antenna to the round of 8 on a Zzyzxx.
Folks lusting over Palmer's lime green slalom fork.
Voreis raising hell.
Ryan White pulling footless manuals from parking lot to volleyball court.
Bike Toss.
More free Powerbars than you could poop in a month.
Saiz, Vasquez and Peat battling in finals.
Tomac crushing it with the gnashed teeth.
Kovachi Wheels team trailer.
Massive Park Tools trailer with free tools and tech support!!!!

Great stuff!! Love hearing the story from back then.

I remember that year at St-Anne Worlds Shaums pulling some crazy backwards nose manual on a grass slope. It was the most awsome thing I had ever seen on a bike by far. He then signed my backpack with the classic 51/50!

Shaums had some great footage in the Plush videos. The guy has some amazing handling skills on a 40+lb dh rig.

Who knows what happened to this guy? I remember his section in Chain Reaction (I think?) being pretty cool, but don't actually remember any race results or video parts beside that one.

I remember Shaum's whipping it up for the crowd on the final jump of the Grouse Mountain WC track (Vancouver) and breaking his leg.

He also has to be the first mtn bike athlete to be sponsored by Red Bull. Was anyone before him?

He still is by the way.

We were out jumping at Ste Anne at one of the WC at the back of the parking lot and Shaums sheared his seatpost off and gashed his chest pretty good. Dude kept riding. He was bad ass back then and is still one of the nicest guys around.

An early cycling memory:

1994, Mt. St. Anne WC. Rainy as heck. Long course, slippery like grease at the end. I don't remember why, but Jake Watson ran and tackled Greg Herbold into a mud hole at the finish. H-Ball was not amused, because H-Ball liked his kit clean. Watson did well that day; the sport lost that guy too early.

EDIT: Just remembered that Watson drove a Miyata to a race out West once. That was pretty funny. It was a toy beneath his girth.

Also, anyone remember the bounty at the 1997 NORBA finals for the person(s) who shaved the hell out of a drop in one of the final corners?

One more: Palmer used to stick it in anything that walked. Some friends and I saw him engaged in some activities in a hot tub at St. Anne (1997? maybe) with a young lady we knew. We hollered approval, he gave us a thumbs up.

/not that old, but I have lots of cycling memories

What is a footless manual? Is that possible? It is like a prolonged superman?
Or are we talking footless wheelie?
yes possible. its apparently pretty hard. instead of having feet on pedals you are sitting on saddle like doing a no footer, but riding a manual. takes jedi balance.

Palmer also started the food fight in Ste Anne and one of those guys rode a wheel chair down the hill into the pool, then shoved security into the pool if I remember correctly. I think the UCI even fined him?

Question: how many times was Lopes accused of doing some creative course altering? I can think of two instances (one mentioned here).

Anecdote: I had to get a bolt for a Magura hydraulic set (rim brakes!) at the 1995 Mt. Snow national. Tomac's mechanic Gregorio had hundreds (thousands?) of them, and I bummed one. He demanded loudly in the most humiliating way that I find a replacement for that bolt and return it to him. Great exposure for the sponsors to give a teenager a hard time in that manner - what a knob.

Shaums' riding was nothing compared to his partying

White was crazy with the manuals. I think he won the yearly informal manual contest as Mt. Snow that year. He just went on forever.

Used to watch the old movies again and again. Shaun was/is super cool when he bunny hopped the hell out of his Mountain Cycles.

From when Eurosport would transmit all WCs I remember he qualified top three in one of the WCs and then crashed in the finals. It was really muddy. Do not know what race it was?

The good old sand jump in the back of the parking lot! Classic indeed.

I heard they chose that site to build the obstacles for the Trial Worlds

Palmer did not start that food fight ;)

And MontStAnne fined he and I. (charged my card that I paid my tech fees with)...$600
