Just read the updates on my lunch break. What an amazing thing to do!!!
I read "A Walk in the Woods" a few years back and have been intrigued by the AT ever since.

yeah it seems like it would be a great experience. I can't wait to hear the stories they bring back. My uncle is a retired fire chief and my cousin is a professional backpacker so it should be especially interesting to hear how their trip went

I'm waving. Can you see me now?
Does he go to competitions to see who can hold more sh!t in their back pack? Or does he just walk with them on his back?

Because I know this 12 year old in my neighborhood who is damn strong. He can carry 3 plus text books plus lunch!

They made it!!!!!!!!!!!

Last update:
We made it!!! We summited Katahdin yesterday (8/23/10). It was an amazing mountain, and the perfect end to such a long journey. The 100 mile wilderness was full of amazing views and plenty of ponds and lakes. We saw our first real view of Katahdin on White Cap Mountain, and the following days were filled with more great views of the mountain. We spent our last night on the trail at The Birches at Katahdin Stream Campground in Baxter State Park. Animal, Magic Man, Zen, Devo, and Apple Juice also spent the night there before summitting. The night before our final climb felt like being a little kid on the night before Christmas. None of us slept well, but we were all ready to climb when the time came. I arrived on the summit and hugged the sign that rad "Katahdin". The moment I had worked for since March had finally arrived. I sat down out of the wind and drank my celebratory beer. As more hikers arrived, we all took photos of each other and celebrated our accomplishment. Hiking this trail has been an amazing experience. I've seen so many amazing things, and have met so many great people. I will miss the trail, even the hard days. As Yonder Mountain String Band put it, "In that cool mountain air on an Appalachian Trail, Life is better there." Thank you to everyone for support, words of encouragement, and anything else that may have helped along the way. We're flying out of Bangor, ME on Thursday. I hope to see many of you soon, and those that I won't see, I hope to see you sometime within the next year. Take care everyone.
