No Rim Tape in the Ghetto

So I just set up my DH ghetto tubeless. The DT swiss fr600 rim and Minion 3c's were such a bitch to wrestle onto the rim i had to ditch the rim tape to get them on. Am I now just waiting for disaster? I did check the spoke holes carefully for burrs and such. Anybody else lose the rim tape and have issues?

Super duper ghetto...20" tubes. i hope its not to much of a stretch, pun intended. Really, i'm mostly worried about two possibilities...

1. the tube strip/ tire combo spinning on the rim a little, catching an eyelet hole, and tearing

2. the tube strip getting blown out through an eyelet hole during heavy impacts/ extra pressurization.

anybody out there have any bad experiences with this?

The first time I went super ghetto, I left the eyelets un covered. Going through a rock garden, it sprayed out from behind a spoke. So yea, bad experience. My trail bike is currently super ghetto, but I plugged the eyelets with some cork. It's been a year using UST tires and I never lost one iota of air.

Thanks for letting me know it may happen. I got the tire on the front wheel with the rim tape in there, but its a mavic 325 / minion combo - much easier than the dt swiss fr600 for whatever reason.

I may go back, pull the rear apart, and re-instal the tape - just for piece of mind. Maybe the tire has stretched out a little by now and it will be a little easier?

Thanks

I'm guessing you could also try electrical tape in lieu of rim tape, I've done that before in a pinch, but not for running tubeless. Should work for this application as well.

electrical tape might be thinner than the rim tape i was using - ie, more clearance. Thanks.

The clear hockey and strapping tape are just for covering the eyelet holes, right? Then some sort of ghetto tube or stan's rim strip for the actual tubeless seal, correct?

Or are you guy's relying on just the tape and possibly some stan's liquid to seal the whole setup?

I've heard of some rim manufacturer's suppling tape only for a tubeless setup. Does this workout well for DH?

Took it all apart and got the rim tape in there. I think my tire wresting skills must have improved. wasn't as bad this time around.

Thanks for all the suggestions
