I'm heading out to NY this summer from july 14 to aug 5th and im hoping to make a trip to one of the resorts out there (whiteface, diablo, plattekill are current thoughts). I'll be staying in lake george. Im hoping to do a race, but it doesnt look like theres any races at diablo or plattekill, maybe whiteface? anyway, if I can't race, im flip flopping between whiteface and a longer drive to somewhere like platekill or diablo. any advice from people or possible races at whiteface (downhill mike) or any other races you'd suggest during that period?

PS, I have a cabin with some pretty intense DH directly behind it sitting on lake george. If you are around and might be interested in riding for a day and hanging out at the cabin, pm me.

more interested in pure DH. DH style jumps and drops are fine, but mostly I like techy rocky steep stuff

plattekill is more dh than diablo theres also mt snow in vt not too far from where you will be closer than diablo and probably closer than plattekill i just replied to one of your posts in a thread i made about the demo 8, depends on my job situation and all, but i would probably be down for riding up that way at some point, some friends would be too

also, lake george is pretty close to whiteface, but closer to Gore, not sure if they have mtb tho

my friend works as a snowboard instructor during the winter, from the sounds of it the summer mtb is pretty lackluster, i think i'd rather take the time to head somewhere more dedicated!

i'll let you know as i plan it out more, but its a pretty fun set of trails, just alot of carrying the bike to get to the top! I dont think theres a single uphill, and most of it is very very steep

platty and whiteface aren't that far apart, maybe 4-5 hours. Jim mac can give you better details, or there's always google maps.

FWIW platty is only open weekends, whiteface is open 7 days a week.

Don't rule out Jiminy Peak. 1.5 hours from Lk. George and also open 7 days. I live about 10 miles south of L.G. in Glens Falls.

Whiteface is your closest and most available option. 7 days a week, 2500 ft. vert per run = very tired hands at the end of the day! From Lake George, it's only about an hour north.

Other options -
Killington - about an hour and a half from LG as well, they're 7 days a week as well.

Highland in NH - haven't been there but it looks amazing! Maybe 3 hours away from LG.

Sugarbush in VT - again, haven't been there, but it looks promising.

Of course Plattekill - about 2.5 hours from LG. Call, there is a rumor that they will be open 7 days a week from the 7/14-7/19, as many racers will be in the area (week between Nationals at Windham, NY on 7/11 to the Nat Champs at Mt. Snow on 7/19).

Speaking of which, there is Mount Snow's National Championiships - if you want to race and have already qualified, this race is right in your timeframe. Both courses look interesting (beginner/sport and pro/expert). If you race expert, expect a crazy fast and rocky course! Moutn Snow is about 2.5 hours from LG.

Jiminy Peak in Hancock, MA is about 1.5 from LG as Tigg said. 7 days a week, though M-F they only run the small lift. Fun trails! Weekend they run the big lift, which gives you access to more trails/longer runs.

If you want to do some XC with a bunch of DH guys, Elevate Cycles in Saratoga (about 30 minutes south of LG) does a Tuesday night ride on the Saratoga Mountain Bike Association's trails - nothing like riding trails made by and for mtb'ers! We mostly chase each other on the downhills and swat mosquitos/wheeze slowly on the uphills. swoopy and a lot of rocks!

This is a partial list, I'm sure I left out a few places. There is also Bromont and Mt. St Anne in Canada. Hope this helps! - Jim

awesome, thanks for the tips jimc. Wont be able to race mt snow due to not qualifying, looking more for "randomly entering sport class and having a good time." But thats a great list - im probably gonna steer clear of the xc type rides since im only gonna have my glory (36-27 my highest gear) and climbing with it sucks - i'd end up pushing it alot and keeping everybody back. that said, whiteface ounds pretty good, i think i'll probably go there. If its amazing maybe ill try and make the trip to platty too but distance is a factor.

thanks for all the tips guys, and remember if you're in the area and wanna go shred about 2.5K+ of decent and then chill at a lake cabin drinking beer, boating, and cliff jumping, hit me up.

good stuff, that video looks fast! is that the way most east coast stuff is? im totally ignorant as to what normal east coast stuff is, the only time i've done any riding back east is on the steep rocky gnarness that is right behind my cabin

The NMBS northeast regional championship will be held at Windham Mountain the weekend of July 13-14th if you can make it out a day earlier you could use that to qualify for the Nat. Champ. Other than those two, since they are during that time frame, no one else is really holding any races.
So far the rumor about Plattekill being open between the Regional Champ. and the national champ is looking good. Lazlo announced it during the first race on May 4th and its look like it will happen. I hope to race in both and will be taking the week off between the two events. During that time I plan on riding some at Platti, White face and Killington before heading over to Mt. Snow for practice runs. I'll be joined by a few others and we would love to show you around Platti/Killy, I will PM you as it gets closer.
If you like steep rocky tech downhill definitely hit up plattekill. Killington is also pretty epic and I would hit that for sure.
Dont forget to chill out and hang around lake George for a few days. its really chill and relaxing around there. Head out to the Rodeo in Lake Luzerne http://www.paintedponyrodeo.com/http://www.paintedponyrodeo.com/. Thats always a good time and good for kids.

hahah, i'll be spending lots of time at lake george (thats where my cabin is. Any trips to resorts will be day trips and ill probably only end up going to one), i like riding everything but flat pedally stuff, long as I dont have to pedal alot im down!

I have a friend who i'll be going with, how is platty in the way of rentals? cant really make it out early, so i'll be missing the races, but oh well!

Plattekill has 2006 Turner DHR's for rent.

Whiteface is both really fast and/or technical rocky stuff. Pretty much no pedaling needed.

Plattekill is not to fast, more technical roots and shale. There are some fast trails but for slow ones. Pretty much no pedaling around there either.

definetly sounds like you should be coming up to whiteface, we have very technical riding up here, open 7 days a week, from lg its only about an hour and some change, but definetly whiteface is going to be your best bet, check out www.downhillmike.com for info about the bike park, we've been up building the new pump track and that is going to be an amazing addition for the year, but the downhill is really really fun, very steep and technical but theres still some faster open sections, not tons of man made stuff, there is the north east shore trail that has a few bridges and a very long double teeter on it,

plattekill is very shaley, and is going to be a further drive than whiteface is, i would sat platty would be maybe something like 3-4 hours from LG maybe,

theres another video from whiteface last spring of some of the lower mountain dh,

let me know if you have any other questions and i'll do my best to help out

Looks like some great accurate advice for Whiteface. Thanks guys!
We are def. the closest and have some big mountain riding to offer you. The race course used a fair amount of open ski trails so it was super fast in sections. Usually while riding on any other day other than race day, you check out other trails and mostly stay in the woods on the single-track. Figure 20 + minutes per run of riding after you get off the gondola. Mostly old school style single-track but we are adding some cool wooden features each year.

Our new pump track will be ready for opening day. With a cabin in Lake George a visit to the high peaks area would def. compliment your trip to upstate New York. Ride 25 minutes to a cliff jumping spot (50+ feet in spots). Stop at a picnic table at the waterfalls to have lunch and watch bikers cross?, lots to do on and off the mountain!

Please note Whiteface will be closed on Sunday July 20th for the Lake placid Ironman. All roads are closed for that day so we cannot open (bummer) because of the roadies.

I'm going to be in Manhattan in early August with some friends who are going to a Yankees game, and since I'm not a baseball fan, I was thinking of bringing my bike and trying to hit up a mountain.

What are the easiest mountains to get to for a tourist staying in the city? I will have no car, and I'm only 23, so I cant rent one.

Thanks,
Brent

for manhattan:

check out diablo or plattekill. I think plattekill has a train that runs nearby, diablo I have no idea. Both should have riders going from the city each weekend, so you're smartest bet is to connect with somebody on here or another forum.

To the OP:

you'd be quite silly to skip whiteface when you're that close. The trails are very "organic" in that they aren't the bermed up man-made trails that you see so often. They are challenging, and more so when you're on your 8th run 3/4 of the way down the mountain. Bring your best brakes.

Plattekill is similarly natural but much steeper and rockier. it's definitely a great place, but I'm not sure it's worth the drive, and it will be about 5 hours. My girlfriend lives nearby (across 88) and it's about an hour from her, and Pkill is 4 hours from her house.

Also, if you have the time or are looking for an alternative, check out Bromont. I don't know the distance from lake george, but it's probably no more than 2-3hrs, and the riding is world-class for sure. It's tough to beat, but I'd stick with WF unless you're making two trips.

Diablo is pretty close to NYC, like 20-30 minutes depending on traffic and your driving habits. I'm pretty sure you can rent a car at 21, you just have to pay a little extra since you're young. If not I know they have bus runs but I have no clue as to the schedule.

You do realise your passing up a chance at history (no more Yankee Stadium after this year) to go riding right? Not bashing, just saying.

This is incorrect. You CAN rent one, however there is an additional fee. I rented cars when I was 22.

I am going out to NY around that time as well. I am staying with family until the 11th when I am heading to Windham for the NMBS nationals on the 11th-13th. Then I am planning on taking sunday to drive down to Mt Diablo to ride monday the 14th and tuesday the 15th and then drive up to Vermont for the nationals on the 16th and then flying home on hte 20th. My friend that was going with me just canceled and so as of now I am traveling alone. I have hotels with two beads booked for the hole time so if someone wanted to join in and split some of my accomidations I would be happy to have the company. Or if you are just going to be at any of these places to ride it would be great to have people to ride with.

Leme know,
