I've finally had enough of my Marwo Nightpro lights. I've had one of them going on 10 years. This new generation of LED's are just too good for me to keep using these old halogens.

The guy I rode with last night had 2 dual led's on his bars, they were SO bright and the spread was so good... made me feel like my vision was crippled by comparison. The halogens work fine a cruising speed, but at a high pace, the terrain comes faster than I can read it.

So what's good that wont break the bank?

Was looking at this for the bars: http://www.cygolite.com/products/new/MityCross2/mitycross400.html

and This for the helmet:
http://www.cygolite.com/products/new/Expilion/expilion250.html

Still gonna keep me under $400.

I'm looking as well.

Was pointed toward the MagicShine Lights at geomangear dot com by our local group night ride. Many of them are using them.
Under $300 for dual bar beams and a sep. helmet light.

I've been out of the light loop for a while now, so you may not care, but there have been some niterider HID lights on chainlove lately for ~$200.

Just FYI.

This.

I picked up the slickrock 900 HID for $99 off chainlove. It originally retailed for $600. Can't imagine ever needing anything brighter.

900 lumen for $90... I gotta ask what the catch is. Must be made super cheap?
I've been running mine regularly for almost a year now. Friggin Awesome. I also use them at work when I know I'll be doing inspections in dark places. Most people are in awe to the amount of light put out and such a small battery pack.

So what if they are cheap? By all accounts they are as reliable as any established overpriced light manufacturer. For the price of a lot of systems you can buy 4-5 magicshines. Makes sense to me. They don't output 900lumen though. That's the theoretical rating. 500-600 is what you should expect. Lupines and etc will have a nicer beam. I just don't think that they are worth the premium that they are wanting.

I'm getting the 1400 for the bars, 900 for the helmet, and the taillight for road rides.

I have the mitycross 250 for a helmet light and an old halogen flood for the bar. I am very happy with the quality of the cygolite. It works well for an inexpensive LED system. Parts are cheap and readily available too.

I'd agree with Moff, for $90 there's not much to complain about. I used mine biking all last year, through the XC skiing nights, and a decent amount this season already. Get the helmet mount accessory too.

That being said, I like my other light even better, Airbike P7 for $200. Review here

Yeah I pretty much drew that same conclusion about 20 min ago when I ordered a 900.

For now this one is going on the bars but I'll probably end up with one on my helmet too. Or maybe one of those 250 lumen cordless jobbers that NR and cygolite make.

IMHO you'll be better off getting it from Geoman. They open up the lights they get from the same supplier as DX and remove any chaff and generally give them a once over before sending them out the door. They are also selling the latest version of MS while DX seems to be a generation behind. Their CS is top notch as well.

Got mine from Geoman cuz I wanted to support US based businesses. A few extra $$ for great CS, faster shipping, and good Karma is worth it IMHO.

Just from DX.
geoman is supposed to be super fast. As in, out the next day shipping.
Some stuff on youtube about them as well....

There is a note on geoman about the plugs not being UL listed or something.
Two 900s on the bars with their "Y" plug accessory and another 900 on the helmet... good to go!

I like the though of using the Y splitter. May do that if I don't get enough spread from the bars with the single light.

The Cygolites may have gotten better, along with everything LED. I had one 2 years ago. Rode with it for awhile and then returned it to REI. Went back to a NR HID. $99 on chainlove and bright as hell.
The battery life on the Cygo was way less than advertised. I had the Li-ion LED and would only get 2 hours. (they claimed 8+)

Damn, I rode home from work at 10:30 on Thursday thinking the street lights would be enough, I was wrong. I need a light for my commuter, damn long hours.

An alternative (and even cheaper) option is to get a SSC P7 flashlight from DealExtreme and a couple of 18650 batteries. The emitter is basically the same as the MS 900. Only downside is that you have to swap in a new battery every hour. Maybe not ideal for 24 hour racing, but doesn't impact most commutes, and may not be too bad for MTB rides. Also, there aren't any cables (esp. nice for helmet mounting!)

I am waiting for sku.22567 (light) with sku.20392 (batteries) and sku.6105 (charger). There's a version of the light without the modes too, if you just want on and off.
