It really depends on the level of separation. I had a level 2/3 separation last fall. I was XC riding after six weeks and back on the DH bike after eight.

3rd degree 12 years ago. Healing wasn't too bad but now that I'm older and surfing a lot it's been bothering me somewhat. The bone sticks out quite a bit and it freaks some people out, but it's never really been an issue for me until now. Basically, not too big of a deal. It should heal quick.

had the right shoulder slightly dislocate back in 06, it went forward. Been good since then. I was surfing about a month and a half after it happened... best recovery ever. Just make sure once its feeling better you work on the muscles a lot to strenghten the region, otherwise Ill get operated.

Had a type 2 separation 3 years ago. Spent a couple weeks in a sling, then some light physical therapy...

Demo 9: dislocation and separation aren't the same.

I had something between a 2-3 a few years ago. I was riding DH about 8 weeks later if I remember correctly. Didn't feel 100% for about 6 months though...

Seems a theme. Grade 2/3 and a couple of months it took to get back going again. year + on, no probs, just looks weird.

Was launched OTB's and remember thinking those bushes look real soft, cool! then at the last second it was littered with rocks and then a weird crunching noise. it was the 1st practice, of the 1st race of the year. still did the race loaded up on meds. Hurt like hell...

I had a stage 3 AC separation last year july with a distil end fracture of the collarbone, was 6 weeks in a sling, back on the roadbike a week after that. Did all the physio, then about two months after being out of the sling I was on the XC bike. The only problem is the bone sticking up, like MDJ said it freaks people out, but no big deal. Swimming seems to help strengthen the shoulder joint quite a bit. Good luck with the recovery...

Grade 3 six weeks ago yesterday. My ortho said to get out of the sling as soon as I could so just over a week in I was out of the sling. 2.5 weeks ago I got released to physical therapy but had already started to stretch and do very light load bearing exercise. I have been street riding here and there, doing a xc ride today, hope to be on my dh bike next weekend (7 weeks from injury).

As for surgery, my ortho told me that I had a textbook Grade 3 and that I could choose what path I wanted to take. with a grade 3, you have destroyed all the ligaments that hold the AC joint together. Surgery may help pull everything back together aesthetically but wont fix the ligaments. To me, a little bump isnt worth going through surgery to fix.

Everyone's body is different, listen to yours carefully. Just because one person comes back after 6 weeks doesnt mean that you can. You only get one body that you have to live with for a while. your bike isnt going anywhere.

What dag and bizuch said....

Mine was an anterior dislocation... 3 inches out of the "Y-process" when measured from that view... Pretty traumatic.... hurt like a b!tch. Still dealing with it years later....I've also had the other shoulder pop out and right back in on it's own on a trailride spill. No problems with it to this day.

Def. listen to what your body is telling you.

I came out of the end of PT treatments performing everything that I was asked yet still didn't feel right.... could/can still perform 90% of daily things. Anything below the horizontal plane of shoulder height and below is great. (so getting back to riding wasn't much of a big deal) Reaching up and over my head to do things is still bothersome. Or, anything behind the vertical plane behind me? Reaching from the front of the car into the back seat to hand the kids something as an example... can still actually hurt at times... So, should I have done surgery? Maybe... It's now years later and I wonder.
Still get a really focused pain about the size of a dime right at the shoulder/head of the deltoid sometimes....
If they give you a resistance band and ask you to put it around a door knob and perform exercies in-between PT sessions? DO IT... Can only improve your outcome.
Best wishes with the recovery!

4x on the left shoulder, 3x on the right, here. all varying degrees of severity.

they heel pretty quick really... do all the perscribed PT, and be smart - ie if it starts feeling tired or weak while pt'ing, stop. its not a muscle, you are stressing the injury, not helping things.

probably a month on average depending on what is wrong, and you should be right as rain.

When i was younger (like 10) i had a basketball hoop fall on me(yes stupid little kid shenanigans) and hurt like a bitch, found out 3 weeks ago at an x ray that i separated it, i obviously did nothing to rehab it or anything, i feel fine. this was the total "neglect" route and it worked out great.

I don't know what level mine was.
It healed up, things were fine, but I jacked up the same shoulder a few more times. Eventually it would just pop out of the socket on its own.

Had surgery, went through PT and followed everything they said religiously - now this shoulder is stronger than my other one.
I'm not recommending surgery for everyone, it just worked for me. I know 2 other people who just did PT and were fine.

I've had a grade 3 for a couple of years now. I went to a specialist and he advised against surgery as long as it didn't hurt, and it doesn't, so I've just been living with it. I can do most anything except heavy weight lifting. My shoulder doesn't seem stable under a lot of pressure and kind of feels like it's grinding in the joint. It doesn't bother me at all while riding though. The bone sticking up like that is kind of freaky but the chicks seem to dig it. ;)

Did mine last November. The initial assessment was 3rd degree AC separation and likely surgery. After 2 weeks it got reassessed to 2nd degree. Never got surgery and did my rehab semi seriously. No surgery.

I've got a bump, and notice some fun crunchy sounds, but i don't ever notice it while riding. I took a pretty good spill on it two weeks ago to no I'll effect.

For the record, I'm one of those geeks that wears Armour.

The only reason I had surgery was mine just seemed to be getting worse, not better. I rested it for a long time, did some PT, but I had a few freak crashes. I do wear armor, but it didn't matter.

My last ride before surgery, my shoulder actually rolled out of the socket while I was in a turn. Bad wipeout followed.

But less than 4 weeks after the surgery, I was already doing pushups.

grade 3, 6 years ago. took a couple of months to come right, but hasn't really limited my riding at all (complete lack of bike skills limits me in other ways).

like another poster, was told that surgery was only going to be aesthetic so not to bother unless my male-modelling career depended on it.

do your PT, don't fret - you'll be riding again soon enough.

My wife crashed on Missing Link at Snowshoe on Aug 19, grade 3 close to 4 (per the surgeon). Surgery was on Aug 27. She had a couple of therapy sessions before we moved on Sep 28. Right now she is doing her own therapy based on what they told her (we don't want to spent $200 a visit so they can sit and tell her to do the same same day in day out). She can lift her arm about 3/4 the way up, but no wait bearing. She hasn't ridden anything to talk about other than the parking lot, but she signed up to do a 30 mile trek on a paved trail (starting her out slow). She has a brand new Spec Demo 7 waiting for her when she's up to it.... she wants to get on it bad, especially after watching us at Clemson Freeride all day yesterday.

I seperated mine three years ago, stage two. Did some physical therapy healing process not too bad. If you're in a sling try not to stay in it too long because the muscles in that area will get weak.

The bad thing is it's one of those injuries you will always feel but it doesnt really limit your abilities.

grade 2/3 on may 22nd of this year, left side, along with a shattered right wrist (radius 7 pieces, ulna 2 pieces).

at this point it's still a little weak, but other than that its fine for DH abuse, I've crashed lightly on that side a few times since the injury and it all felt fine. Sometimes its a little achy but I'd assume that's to be expected.

haha - wait 10 years and you'll hear all kinds of funny sounds coming from your shoulder.

I was (relatively) young and dumb when I did mine and never went to the ortho since the ER doc said there wasn't much that could be done for it. Mine was recently getting sore to the point that I couldn't lift my arm over my head so I decided it was time to see the doc.

It didn't start out well when the x-ray tech said she never saw one so bad. The doc gave me 3 options. One was surgery to fix it but this has a very small success rate so not worth doing. Two was to grind down the end of the bone to alleviate some of the crunching that goes on, and three regular cortisone shots. She gave me a cortisone shot while I was there and it seemed to help a little, but there is no way I'm going back on a regular basis for shots.

If it deteriorates more I will consider option 2 but so far I'm doing fine.

Seperated my right shoulder on Telonics back in 04( 3rd degree). That one hurst like $hit. Was back DHing in approx 2-3 months. No issues with it since

Seperated my left on Labor day at Big Bear on the pedal out- yeah totally lame( 3rd degree). I'm 49 and Its been going a bit slower than I would have hoped...... not quite ready to DH as I feel even if I had to eject and put my arm out, that might couse me to make a hospital visit. My suggestion is rest up and wait till its good and strong again before risking another fall that could makes things worse.

Good luck.

Did myself in with a grade five last September just before Interbike. Still worked Interbike and shot Cross Vegas (medicated.). Had surgery and 5 weeks later was riding the NenGao Trail in Taiwan.

I pushed it way to hard and my shoulder is still messed up. Did PT, but have regular issues and have to ice after riding.

I had an Anterior Seperation/Dislocation of my right shoulder in Late Mid August 2009. I was in a sling for 8 weeks total, doing physio 3 times a week the whole time. After the 8 weeks and I was cleared to get into a training program I lived in the gym until it got better. At first I had zero strength and lost alot of mobility. It came back fairly quick though considering how much damage I did.
Id say the total time was about 3 months until I felt like I was good to go again.

just got back from ortho, grade 3 separation, surgery not required. should heal up just fine over the next few weeks, thankfully.
Grade III - definitely take it easy. December might be pushing it... if you really want to go, maybe just go to cheer on folks or take photos. You'll be able to ride, but won't be able to pull up on the bars very well.

Be sure to do the exercises and/or physical therapy if you can. It will help make sure you heal up properly.

This is good advice but as I have said before everyone is different. I had read anywhere from 4-12+ weeks before I would be able to ride, bottom line is that the only way to know if you are ready is to wait it out. I took my DH bike out for a XC ride on sunday, felt completely fine except for 2 small twinges that I felt pulling up. other times I pulled up it was fine. I'll be on my DH bike for real on sunday, 7 weeks post injury. Just listen to your body.

Just got my MRI results back from a crash I had about a month ago now. I have fluid, bursitis, a sist, a pinched nerve and torn ligaments in my right shoulder that I already had surgery on. Going to see the doctors on Friday, lets hope he says some good things???
