Owning a pool table

Any of you monkeys own a pool table? I found a smoking deal for one on CL, was debating getting one for my living room and turning the bike room into the TV room.

Any issues I need to be aware of with buying a used one?

One piece slate, or sectional? Or is it even slate? If the bumpers, pockets, and slate are in good shape, then get it, recover it, and play. One piece is by far the best, but a well built 3 piece that is solid can also be fun.

I have always wanted one, but don't have the room.

I think I can fit it in my living room. Move the TV and all of that to the guest bedroom.

I am not sure what its specs are. Going to go take a look this afternoon.

The most important part is to keep it the way it was built. The slates should be marked, otherwise mark them when you take it apart (if it's a 2 or 3 piece slate and not solid). Make sure it goes back together exactly how it was taken apart.

The strip club we used to frequent (open at 7am and we worked graveyard) was next door to a billiards supply store and had perfect $.50 tables. They would recover the tables every few months and had a nice selection of house cues. It's easy to freshen up a table and if you have the room, it's awesome.

Get it, post pics.

Hmmmm, lawyer, single, pool table in the living room.......

Why do I get the mental image that it's primary use will be someplace for you to do lines of coke off of a hooker's stomach?
Why else would you get a pool table?

I never actually owned a pool table, but I did deliver them for a few years in college. I came across a lot of people calling for a table to be moved from one place to another before knowing anything about the table. There are cheap tables out there that use particle-board instead of slate. If it is a 1 piece slate good luck getting into your place. Not impossible, but it is a mission. If it is a 3 piece, get someone to wax between the pieces of slate and cover it with felt. Test all of the pockets with the colored balls and with the cue ball, if it has a ball return system. Shoot me a PM if you have any other questions.

Phoenix, strippers, coke. And I've been eyeballing a 1972 911 that needs some work. Yes, this is a great idea. Do you know, perchance, where I can get a white suit and a hot pink shirt to go under it?

Why else would you get a pool table?
Exactly...

As long as you have room for an albatross in living room you could also keep a whale in the pool.

Pool is best played in the pool hall. That's all.

Roommate and myself acquired one for free soon after I got out of college - old bar room 1 piece table.

Intended to put it in the living room of the rental house on the shady side of town. After removing all the furniture and moving it in there w/ the help of the neighborhood thugs, we realized it didn't fit. So we set it up in the drive way and played/drank the night away. Ended up covering it w/a tarp and it stayed there for over a year.

You meet some interesting people at 2 am playing pool in the driveway blocks away from the homeless shelter....only once did it get sketchy.

Long story short - well worth the investment. The table survived. The TN humidity under the tarp laid the felt down and it played retardedly fast, but it was still fun.

I used to have one. Got real good at playing too. We used play games where only trick shots were allowed. Fun.

I play better on shtty pub tables than I do on pristine slate pool hall tables. Same with cues. Pub cues are my preference.

If it's going to be a center piece, then worry about how it looks. If it's going to be in the garage (boy's room), then who cares? Go for it.

My whole house is the "boy's room." The GF doesn't live with me, and the walls are covered in Coop art, bike parts and photos of my awesome exploits. Its a grand salute to my amazing arrogance and narcissistic nature.

The one I looked at today had a pretty distinct "hop" in the center when you rolled a ball over it. Like the ball left the table kind of hop. That one is out. But I found another one in Tempe to go take a look at this weekend.

I know this is going to come off as a dumb question, but just how hard are these things to move?

My father had one at his old house for the longest. Always used, always maintained and also had a ping-pong table to lay in it. It was heavy as all get-out and didn't want to bother with it though so he sold it with the house. I'd love one but I can't quite justify the expense right now. The gal and I were actually looking at the pool tables that have a table-top that goes on it to make it look like a dinning room table. You can't even tell.

Something like this:

but if I had the money I'd get this one :D

and just some awesome tables for SnG's...

Obscura CueLight table ($200k worth of useless fanciness)

the "AR Pool" table trainer (to help you learn to make those trick shots ;))

the disappearing table...

and the gyroscopic table that's always level for use on cruise ships and such. Game was played in rough seas on a cruise liner.

Sorry for the crazy post. Time for bed I think...

If you have the space, go for it. 6 feet of clearance on either side is a minimum for me. A ping pong table to go over top is a good addition.

I acquired a pool table from a fraternity that was evicted from their house during my high school years. It was an absolute bear to move. It had a one piece, 3/4" slate top and removing the legs was quite difficult. We built a special, heavy duty furniture dolly to get it into my parents basement on it's side. Getting it out of the frat house was more interesting. We waited for it to snow a little bit, turned it on it's side with a tarp underneath and slid it onto a tilt bed trailer.

My brothers and I played all the time while we lived there or went home to visit and my dad finally sold it on craigslist last year. I think he enjoyed watching six guys get it out of the basement and on to their trailer.

BTW - first order of business was to sanitize it, install new bumpers and install new felt. I imagine that table had some stories to tell. I think cost for the parts was less than $150 from local suppliers (early 90s dollars though).
