personally i would go aluminum, not because of price or used vs new. for me durability takes priority over weight. not saying that the carbon isn't durable or has issues, I just feel the legs would be able to withstand a little more rough handling / riding before needing replaced (theoretically).
we're going to need pics of said pro chick to give you the correct answer.
Are both forks from this year? Because the Air Cartridge is different from the '09 version and the '10 version. If so pick the 2010 version. I would personally choose the Alu version, no real advantage for the carbon version, and the Alu is brand new. I've rode one this summer and it is SICK, best fork I've ever rode, coming from 10 years of Boxxer forks.
I'm gonna reccomend Nick for VP of RM.
If the carbon has a good history of no problems, I'd be tempted to take that one. It's a known quantity. Someone has tested it and knows it's solid - provided it hasn't been abused in that one season.
I know these new Dorados have a good reputation, but I still feel high end forks are "like a box of chocolates"........

What's the difference between the cartridges?
Depends, could be nothing, See when the fork was produced and if it was ever sent in for the updated air system.
My assumption is that it would have updated everything,considering who's it was.
its buhl. larry, you might as well try it. it sticks to the ground a lot more than the boxxer which is something you may like. a bit more of a plow fork.
Get the aluminum one since it's new and comes with the warranty service (if you should ever need it - basic service on that fork is stupid easy).

The carbon one is in the 7"travel mode right now.So it's pretty easy to change that to 8".
Also how the customer service?I'm getting mixed reviews on that one,too.
i thought the carbon version comes with the service. and wouldnt the free service be only for the original owner?
She is not a very big rider nor is she very hard on her gear. And being maintained all year by a professional race team you know that if there was anything wrong with it, it would have been fixed. If she is offering up a good deal for ya compared to the aluminum, go for it!

I would get the carbon but only for the comedic purposes of putting a super high end fork on my 5/6 year old bike, haha.
Seriously though, it sounds like a complete toss-up. I'd see if you'd still be eligible for the mega-turbo service plan on the carbon fork as a second-hand owner and if you are, get that if it's better than the warranty service on the alu.
Also, see if you can get the sweet sniper-rifle case for the carbon one. I've heard it makes you faster.

For the same price You can get a brand NEW fork and You are considering buying a 1 year old fork just because it has carbon upper legs? New fork = warranty. Alu legs should be less prone to some damage. This carbon ver., even if it is in mint condition, it has some wear on the stanchions, damper rod and stuff (even if it was regularly serviced and is not noticable). Just buy a new fork man. It is like You would be asking : Should I buy a new Bugatti Veyron or a 1 year old veyron for the same price , coz this 1 year old car has leather seats ...
I'd go new too, if I could afford it. The carbon is terribly bling, and you know the kinks have been massaged out on that specific fork, but it's already got a season of use on it by a pro rider...so that's a season of accelerated wear and dirt accumulation and things like that.

I think a better analogy would be buying either a 2008 Gallardo LP560-4 or buying a 2007 Gallardo Superleggera for the same price.. sure the superleggera is a limited-production run model that has been lightened and had special badging. But peformance-wise the lp570-4 is actually faster because of the updated engine. Aight, might have went off on a bit of a tangent..
The Aluminum version comes with the case. For 80 GRAMS difference I would buy a new one as well. The fork is killer BTW.

stiffness in the aluminum one and went with it. I ordered ti-bolts for my alum.

Personally, I'm not intrigued by the carbon version because of weight savings. I'm more curious about how it would feel. The GT Fury in CF doesn't offer significant weight savings (IIRC) over the alu frame but the ride quality is supposedly different. Of course, that might not make a difference to you, but it might factor in.
Curiosity aside, you're probably better off going with the new alu one. New is new and 1200 isn't a bad price, I don't think.

a new fork is nice, and the $1200 price is good....for the average consumer
don't worry those 18 troy lee kits will keep you looking pro through the long dark winter. you just gotta convince people on the shortbus then you're dialed.
The aluminum one damps out so much little stuff from the trail just from the chassis design, I can't imagine the carbon one offering much more in that department. No weight savings to speak of.

Hack,your little murdered out bike just convinced me to go full pimped out carbon bling.
I just talked to the manitou tech guy.He said those forks have been there for full upgraded parts and have new internals.They also get rebuilt after every race.He also said if I damage a carbon leg ,they would give me a hookup on the aluminum legs.So ,really can't go wrong here.Plus it's good to throw some money Melissas' way,she's a good chick.
