There is a new(ish) drink on the market called Four Loko.

It is a cafffeinated, alcoholic energy drink that has malt liquor as its base and contains 12% alcohol by volume sold in a 23.5oz can.

Here are some amazing stories from Four Loko users  :

If they ban these types of drinks they accomplish nothing - its a stupid media driven controversy. Drinkers can still make/get mixed drinks like vodka with red bull which is nothing new.

Another "Sparks" type of beverage
Yes, but a WAY higher alcohol %

Some of the stories are pure gold. Very Red Rabbit or Mooshu.

Drank 4 Lok's blacked out, accidently called my landlord at 2am, then I walked to McDonalds and from what my receipt says I ate 7 double chz burgers and a large chocolate shake. Walked back home with some friends and puked on a parked car. Woke up and there was piss on my desk. Thank you Four Lokos.

In my experience it gives you that extra special hangover. Doesn't seem to give me any energy either. Just keeps me awake long enough to continue to be blackout wasted. Then I wake up feeling like i'm swimming in my bed and my heart's beating like I already had my morning coffee.

I'd rather just drink liqour. I don't need grape drank that makes you "loko".

I do however, find it hilarious how many of those stories involved people crapping their pants.

I've had a few, but they don't sell them in UT. Pretty sure there's something like 500 calories in a can, too.

edit: Most of my more extreme escapades have been fueled by a sh!tton of caffeine and booze.

haha seriously.

I drank one and definitely felt it. I would not consider myself a lightweight either. Worth a try for sure. Maybe you will end up with a cool story. haha

At least it's another way to identify total douchebags at a glance.

I can only hope that most people recognize this crap as Sun County Wine Coolers for a new generation.

So just doing some numbers....... 24oz can's of 12% alcohol is equal to ~6 shots of vodka and god knows how much caffeine (news reports claim 12?). Suddenly those stories don't sound like they're exaggerating as much.

It's actually a little less than 5 shots. Still a lot.

The news report is completely false.

Mixing vodka and energy drinks can easily be more hazardous especially certain brands like NOS, Fixx, Lost, etc.

Caffeine and Alcohol Content of Photographed Energy Drinks

In November 2007, researchers at Wake Forest University of Medicine found that the combination of caffeine and alcohol sends mixed signals to the nervous system, causing the effect of a “wide awake drunk.”

Students who consumed these energy drink cocktails were twice as likely to be involved in alcohol-related accidents and injuries than when drinking alcohol alone. The combination of alcohol and caffeine can be dangerous because individuals may not feel impaired even when blood alcohol levels are very high.

Amp – 16 fl oz of Amp contains 143 mg of caffeine or 8.88 mg/oz

Four Loko – packaged in 23.5 oz cans, Loko contains 6 or 12% alcohol by volume. Caffeine, 135mg (source NYT)

Joose - packaged in 23.5 oz cans, Joose contains 9.9% ABV. Caffeine, 54mg

Lost Energy drink – 16 fl oz can (472 mL) contains 320 mg of caffeine or 20 mg/oz. It is marketed to extreme sports enthusiasts

Monster – the caffeine content is1 60 mg for a 16 oz can or 10 mg/oz.

Nos – High performance NOS contains 343 mg of caffeine in an 8 fl oz can or 43 mg/oz. Regular NOS contains 260 mg of caffeine in a 16 fl oz can or 16.25 mg/oz

Red Bull – contains 80 mg of caffeine in an 8.3 fl oz can or 9.64 mg/oz.

It is often used as a mixed with alcoholic beverages, such as vodka; and is the base ingredient in a Jagerbomb.

Rumba – a 16 oz can contains 170 mg of caffeine or 10.62 mg/oz

Snake Eyes – the 16 fl oz can is distributed solely through Holiday Stores. The caffeine content is not published.

Sparks –contained 120 mg of caffeine in an 8 fl oz can or 15 mg/oz. As of December 2008, MillerCoors is taking the caffeine out of its Sparks line. The beverage contains 6% alcoholic content by volume, yet its flavor is similar to the standard energy drinks (tart, sugary).

Tilt – 6.6% alcohol by volume and 100 mg of caffeine, pulled from the market after numerous issues around advertising.

Venom – a 16 fl oz can has 160 mg of caffeine or 10 mg/oz

Xenergy – 200 mg of caffeine in a 16 oz can or 12.5 mg/oz

For comparison:

Brewed coffee has 107.5 mg per 8 oz serving or 13.44 mg/oz

Coke has 31 mg of caffeine or 2.88 mg//oz
Mountain Dew has 55 mg of caffeine or 4.58 mg/oz.

Starbucks Bottled Frappucino contains 90 mg of caffeine in a 9.5 fl oz bottle or 9.47 mg/oz.

This isnt Loco. True Locos drink this:

Did it twice in 6 year gaps and Im not doing it again soon. Every shot makes you feel much worse (or better?). First time the floor went vertical, the reality went into photo mode. Woke up with a nasty scar on my knee...

I have not tried absinthe, though I'd like to, though I hear it just tastes awful, but still.
Its hard to know its taste really as after the first shot you are already a bit drunk ;) Its funny because when other alcoholic beverages have steeper or slacker drunk curves, this one has steps. You literally feel every shot.
Though I have so say I dont like any pure alcohols over 20% (which is weird considering the fact Im still a student)

Absinthe is not all that bad really. It has a notable anise/fennel taste, like Jagermiester or Sambuca. It is definitely a different drunk. I am not a huge alcohol drinker, because mostly it just makes me feel like shi*t. The Absinthe was interesting for sure. Similar to a Red Bull & Vodka - more up than down.
