Sneakers with clipless pedals?

Has anybody come across relatively normal looking shoes/sneakers that have recessed clipless pedal-clip inserts? I have clipless systems on all of my bikes, and ride everywhere I go-- walking around the grocery store, lab, class, bars..etc. in either road-shoes that make me look like I just stepped out of a space-shuttle or mountain-shoes that make me look like I came straight out of the woods is less than appealing. I havent been able to find any shoes that look like normal sneakers (i.e. dont have gaping ventilation sections, cross-over straps etc.) but allow for clips.

If this is a lost cause and I should just find some deep-sole gym-shoes and make them myself, let me know- otherwise, who makes shoes like this?

Making them yourself won't work. Clipless shoes need to be pretty stiff. Sneakers aren't going to cut it there. They'll be super uncomfortable as a result.

There are some options though. Mavic, Pearl Isumi, 5.ten all make stuff along those lines. I'm sure there are more too, that's just all I could think of off the top of my head.

What size shoe do you wear? I have an extra pair of 661 shoes lying around somewhere that I'm no longer using. They're a warranty replacement, and you can have 'em, perhaps in return for a small donation to a charity of my choice. They look similar to the 661 shoes shown above.

Also, where do you live in So Cal?

I wear a 9.5-10, depending on brand. I would happily make a donation in return for some shoes.

I lived in Claremont for the past few years, or around there anyhow. I actually just moved to a new lab about 3 months ago, in Chicago. Lots of commuter-cycling and cyclocross + road cycling as a result, the ol' 29'er is starting to get dusty on the flat, flat trail-riding around here.

Just to add a bit here, I've had the 661 Filters and currently have a pair of Vans Warner SPD shoes. The cleats are recessed better on the Filters. My Warners are really stiff, but the cleat isn't tucked in there tight enough for casual wear IMO.

Clipless boots will never really be 100% casual shoes. In the long run they are uncomfortable. The sole is to stiff. Though I have to say filters are the way to go. Mine are like 3-4 years old and hold great.

Yup. I've ridden to work with my Filters in the past and worked on concrete all day with them. My feet didn't get sore either.

Sorry mate, but the shoes are huge. I wear a 10.5-11, and these feel almost like a 12. Freaking warranty shoes.

For something a little different check out the DZR shoes at dzrshoes.com. Just got a pair of the Strasse shoes and wore them all day at a bmx race and were pretty comfortable.

Working is quite easy in them. I did quite some digging while wearing my filters but once I was out of spare tubs while having a flat and after a 5-7km walk my ankles didn't really feel too happy about doing all the job.

I hate wearing any clipless shoes at the grocery store. A few times I've almost died when my cleat went skating on the linoleum. Its like walking on black ice. And my shoes have a recessed cleat.

Anyways...the Shimano shoes look pretty good, might be worth looking into.

In the end, I went with the veltec LXG2-- I only ordered them a few days ago, so I cant comment on their comfort or general quality, but the certainly seemed the most low-key and non-cycling oriented. They basically look like skateboarding shoes without super-puffy tongues. Should be excellent for the city, lab, grocery store etc.

Thanks for all the help!
