Ok so I have always run a 36 tooth front ring and would like to run a little front chainwheel,

apparently 12t is the smallest I can find without going driver

so what gear range is everybody running?

i've been using 28-13, its a little soft on dirt lines, but since i ride street and park as well, i find its a good overall combo to use.

Using a 25 front does not give enough power for 26" wheels unless you can use a driver hub,

the 25-12 combo only gives 52 gear inch's while the 28-13 gives 56. (Gear inch's is front sprocket size/cog size x wheel size)

industry standard for optimal gearing is 55, but things such as one's strength, weight, and tire choices also affect this. but 55 is a good guideline to start at.

Math check: A 25/12 gives just over 54 gear inches, which is plenty. I rock it.
