Ok, so after a little over 2 months in a cast, they took it off today and gave me a brace to wear for most of the day. I can't afford the physical therapy and my insurance won't cover it so any suggestions on what I can do to help make my wrist stronger again? The southridge winter series starts in a little over a month and am hoping to be able to somewhat compete :P

I know it will take a while to fully heal but any advice really helps! Figure a few people on here have probably had the same injury before and would know. Thanks again!

WTF cheap ass insurance do you have that won't cover PT for a broken wrist? Its almost like your working for an airline already.
Well...let's just say its my dad's insurance at UAL...so ya, pretty good guess actually :P Oh and FYI, he had to ride jump seat on a CRJ 700 and the captian on that owns an F-33 Bonanza so he figured if she has one, that might work for him :P

Anyways, gonna order up a powerball then and give that a try. If anyone else has any more suggestions let me know, thanks!

Hows your wrist movement? I also broke my scaphoid and after almost 2 months on a cast I couldn't move it that much.

For strength the powerball will help, but I think you'll need a bit more. I remember that this was possibly the best exercise I did on physio:

You can easily build this, its just a roll on a wall, and just roll it back and forth extending your wrist flex to the max. (I can draw it if this is not clear, I know I probably didn't explain it very well)

Remember to heat your hand/wrist prior to this, put into in a bowl of hot water. I used to get a "glove" of hot paraffin.

Thanks man! Think I get the idea! Gonna go make something like that when im off work today.

My wrist movement somehow greatly increased overnight but have almost no grip strength. Sucks...its the right wrist and stupid throttles on motorcycles HAVE to be on the right :P

Also, anyone ever use the 661 wrist braces when riding DH or moto?

When I was recovering from my scaphoid break, I made a contraption that worked. I used an old flat handlebar (a cheap PVC pipe would work for this as well.), a shoestring, and a can of soup.
I taped the shoestring to the middle of the bar, and then taped the shoestring to the can of soup.
Roll the can up, roll the can down. Repeat.
I eventually went on to a 3 pound weight.

Stuff like this can help a little, but honestly the best thing is just using your hand everyday, and eventually getting your range of motion back.
The best thing for this is.........time.
Expect it to take a while to get back to full strength no matter what you do.
It honestly took me a whole season of racing to get back to full strength.
But also despite what people say, mine healed on its on, and now years later, there is no sign that it was every broke to begin with. It did take a long time to get my range of motion back though.

I broke my scaphoid when I was 19. When I had the cast off, I asked the doctor if there was any exercises etc I should be doing to speed recovery. He looked at me and said, "Son, you're a 19 year old boy. Your wrist will recover in no time."

True story.

not so much when you're 25 :(

having a very hard time getting back to normal after a comminuted distal raduis/ulna fracture this year. (6-7 pieces of raduis, 2 of ulna)

The range of motion is almost back to normal, but lack of finger strength and pain whilst ambulating them is the big issue, I'm guessing mostly due to the implant and screws that hold all that **** back together.

Have enough ROM for a moto throttle though :)
