This has some context to it, can't be bothered explaining though.

I'm interested in what people think about the dangers of DH riding/racing vs the usual young male dangerous activities of alcohol/drugs/driving too fast, etc.

I think there's definitely a case for serious injury being a similar likelihood in either.

You should include white water kayaking in the comparison as well:

Actually, the issue of risk assessment has always been an interesting concept to me. In most places, people don't think twice about letting their teenage son go play football, and hell, most county school systems provide the funding for the sport. Same goes for skiing in a way. Its nothing to see parents with kids in tow heading up to the black/blue diamond trails, thinking nothing of it. But holy sh!t, you're going to jump a bike over that gap or roll down that steep rock face?! You'll catch on fire and Walter Mondale will become President!!! That's just crazy!

must say most of my serious injuries have all been U.D.I unidentified drinking injuries. Some even involved bikes on the way home. So id say biking is pretty safe in comparison

I find they've got about the same ratio of broken bones. Drugs are however cheaper, and the components are always at or below the claimed weight unlike MTB stuff

Sounds like you need to find a new friend in the business... my drugs are alway heavier then advertised.

Hmmm.... There is a ton of events in life that can be and that are as dangerous or more dangerous than riding DH.

In the event of DH vs Drugs/alcohol/partying.... I would venture to say there is more risk involved with the partying and drinking. Nothing like a little liquid courage to make you feel like your able to jump off that balcony, or doge speeding cars Etc Etc..... what makes it mroe risky with the drugs and alcohol side.... You generally dont think about any kind of safety items like a helmet, or knee pads..... Or if the event you are about to try is even possible to come through without getting hurt anyways.

Apparently it's very hard to get injured while you are very drunk because you are not so tense. Maybe do 2 of the things mentioned and ride drunk?

Though really - what's the point of this topic? I had more serious injuries from random goofs as a kid than from biking but does it really interest you?

For what its worth I usually come up unscathed when I crash my bike drunk. The alcohol makes you limber. I do have a friend that woke up after a night of heavy consumption with a mysteriously broken collarbone, only to find another friend's singlespeed in a pile at the bottom of the stairs to his apartment. "Borrowed" the bike to ride it home and I guess it threw him in a ditch.

I will say that drunken alley cat races are arguably the most dangerous thing I've done on a bike.

Serious response: The lifestyle that comes with the use of hard drugs will ALWAYS be more dangerous than DH in the long run. Drinking can be harmless or deadly, depending mostly on how stupid you are.
