looks like it has a floater to me. Anyway, its a proto that the market will never see. Cool to see them testing it.

here's my question....

is there any serious market demand for this? I mean, maybe I just don't get out enough, but the times I do, I've never been in the pits at a race and overheard anyone saying "man, I woulda pinned that line if I only had a 29'er"

The "I woulda if" guys are the ones buying the XC 29ers though.

Taken from a vital article:

"The hardest part of the progression so far is getting racers to actually use the bike in a competitive environment. JD Swanguen (Intense Pro Rider) is really excited about the bike, especially in rocky conditions. With the help of his sponsors, JD may be racing the 2951 in 2011."

I'm wondering if 2011 will be the year we see a pro riding a 29er in a legit DH race (yes I'm aware of BCD ;))

The excited part may really sound like - yeah its better in the rocks... I love marketing.

I agree with Jon. Why wont the idea die already? Almost no one in the dh world wants it. The only group that does will not ride dh so where is the market for that?

Maybe because only 3 people have actually tried one and the rest are just not interested because someone on the internet said its stupid?

I never tried one so I dont really have an opinion about it.
Id like to actually try it in real life before i say its crap.

ps: dear interwebs: you are not having 29er DH bikes shoved down your throat. The only option I know of that is available to the public is the lenz, which has recieved mixed reviews as far as geo goes. Intense and Trek are doing it for testing purposes. To see for themselves if under a variety of test conditions, the 29er is faster. Trek tends to do their homework with most of their bikes, and I have no doubt it will never see the light of day if they don't think they can make it a faster bike.

now the hacks will be able to ride downhill!
I think the argument that a 29er DH bike is a bad thing because it'll make DH easier is completely fvcking retarded. We buy fancy new tech because (we think) it'll make our bike faster. I.E. make DH easier. Hating on this one specific idea for that reason makes no sense at all.

This is coming from a guy that does not own a 29er quite deliberately, and has never ridden a 29er DH bike, but would like to try one just to see what it's like.

I've ridden 29ers, and liked it....but you ....can't deny the hacks like it cause it makes the rough techy super easy.....and I don't really buy into fancy new tech, actually, I tend to wait till a company gets a bike sorted before getting something proven and reliable, but that's just me I guess...

You gotta know that's failed logic though. Apply the same statement to suspension vs rigid, disc brakes vs cantis, etc. technology progression does not necessarily makes us worse or lazier riders - it just pushes forward what is possible on a bike. which is a good thing, in my opinion. Who's to say the somewhat arbitrarily arrived at 26" wheel diameter is the optimum for all riders in all applications? panty wadding over such things is just silly.

Woah, I'm stoked they actually let media take photos of that bike, I was out of the office that day. I had the pleasure of designing and testing that bad boy awhile back, glad they had some of our pure R&D projects on display.

At Trek we like to try things out before we hate on them.

you're entitled to your opinion, I don't necessarily disagree, I don't necessarily agree fully either....after riding a tallboy all fall, I definitely became a lazier rider, while also riding lines I wouldn't on a 26". I liked it in certain respects and disliked it for others. and fact is, 29ers make trail riding easier for beginners because they don't have to learn the technique and finesse that I feel is part of the essence of riding, but again, that's just me.

I guess it is the same thing as with the 29er XC bikes: there was no market when they started but the companies created one. And you are right, it is called marketing! :)

Im just angry because with every 29er dh proto a new weave of 29 messiahs shows up and tries to stick that wheel up my ass. Maybe I liked 29ers more if a significant portion of that community dropped the mentality of a jehovah witness.

It is quite rude to say you've tested this bike and then not give any detail.;)

I don’t understand the hate. Its a bike. It has 2 wheels and meant to have fun on. You guys sound like a bunch of bigots. Hating something before you know it or ride it.

Most of my bikes are 29ers but don’t preach about it. I just want to ride and have fun. The only 26er I have right now that will be ridden in my M9. I also have a Lenz PBJ that will also be ridden also. I will rotate between the two.

if only everyone on a 29'er wouldn't preach about it, you wouldn't be seeing this kind of backlash.

I agree. Nobody knows my DH bike is a 29er until it is next to a bike with 26" wheels. The reaction is kind of interesting.
You can take it for a run at Pkill if I see you there and I have the bike with me. Its just a different arrow in the quiver.
My arms do feel less beat up on it then my Demo 8 but that could be the difference between a boxxer team and dorado also

Aside from armchair physics and weird prejudices against these alleged 29er preachers, there is basically no empirical evidence out there indicating that a 29" DH bike is a BAD thing (or a good thing). Until a full 29" buld can be done with quality DH components designed for the job, we're all just spinning our wheels in this debate.

I suppose you should all be grateful that the first guys using suspension on mountain bikes weren't overly "preachy" about it, or we'd all be riding rigid. That's a fairly irrational reason for being opposed to something new.
