Looks like this year at the NSC a SS DH race will be offered. :thumb:

Info from DH Mike:

New category added and sponsored by none other than Canfield Brothers!
Open Single Speed DH!
* No Annual USAC license required for this category only.
However, you will need to purchase the 1 day event license for 10 bucks.
* Same course as the main dh event.
* 1 speed only allowed on your bike. Chris Canfield will be at the start checking this.
* Single-Speed DH racers will race after the last pro and before the Open Chainless.
* If you are a serious USAC racer and wanting the points or to qualify for the Nationals, this category is NOT for you.
* No USAC medals or points awarded for Open Single-Speed. However, prizes from Canfield Brothers will be awarded.
* This option is also good for racers who are obviously category 1 or pro and have not raced USAC events.

More info on the NSC if needed:

Sounds like a good time so going to try it out in a few weeks. Anyone else going to give it a try?

Obviously i wont be there being from NJ, but does anybody think this will get alot of attention, in a chainless race you just take your chain off, for SS you need to do a whole drive train swap, and get a single-speed derailleur to deal with the minor chain stretch, will people bother?

We have quite a few pre registered from New Jersey already.

Bootleg is an amazing place to ride in the winter. I have been driving out every year (for over 10 years now) from Lake Placid, N.Y. just to ride there in the winter. Well worth it! Bootleg is even gnarlier than Whiteface! I would think living in N.J. would give you more reason to go there. Bootleg can really test your skills and confidence better than most anywhere on the continent.

No "whole drive train swap" necessary.
This is a quote from Chris Canfield who will be at registration to assist:
"I'll have rear Derailleur cables at sign-up for anyone registering for this-
That way you will not need any replacement parts to find after the race to convert back.
I will also be on hard to help people convert over-

Really easy-

1- pull out your derailleur cable.

2- cut it about 6" long.

3- Run the cable with the metal stop end-(the ball in the shifter) into your derailleur.

4- Run the cable like normal and lock it on the gear you want.

That's It!

After the race- just replace the cable with the new one from registration and your back to normal".

Sounds like a fun race. I'd do it if I had a DH bike and the time. Racing DH is fun, but I hate how sketchy it gets when you're not in phenomenal shape. I can ride fast and turn good, but the sprinting is what always kills me and makes my arms and legs wobbly. This sounds like it would be way fun for racers that aren't completely serious about the whole race scene. You could still pedal if you botch up a turn or two, but it won't kill you and make things unsafe when you push too hard. I'd love to do it.

You Nailed it! That's the whole point. Racing without the fitness factor- So it's fun.

If your looking for points or a chimpionship then cat 1 or pro is for you. You can only enter one of the DH races, SS, Chainless or the Championship. The idea is racing based on your technical skills and not your fitness. Most everyone on here can out sprint me but make the track technically difficult and with very little pedaling, I'll do ok. For me, I just want to come out and ride a bunch with my friends, have a beer and pin it without my lungs bleeding.

You can enter the Championship dh, chainless dh and the super d.
If you enter the non usac single-speed you are not eligible to enter any of the other 3 races.
Since the single-speed was an afterthought, time just does not allow to register in other races. If popular the single-speed may replace the chainless next year, so everyone can enter all races.

Final course decisions to be made later this week. The Monday February 14th press release will announce both race courses.

There are actually some fast sport riders out there. They don't want to pay the fees that come with entering the faster race classes. I don't want to be one of those "sandbaggers" as everyone calls them. Besides, most of the time the sport courses have lame go arounds or different trails all together.

Some info from Chris Canfield on prizes for the SS DH race:

"3 sets of 40a compound Proto C2 tires are up for grabs for the winners, as well as a set of Crampons and our direct mount stem.

Of course, you gotta beat Lance and I to get 'em-"

We will of course send the prizes down the line if we podium.
I don't need to win our own stuff---

But if Carlos beats me regardless- free pedals for him- in gold......
